The Break A Leggers review the 2019/2020 touring production of The Woman in Black at the Cure Theatre in Leicester.
Susan Hill’s acclaimed ghost story comes dramatically alive in Stephen Mallatratt’s stage adaptation. Now entering its 30th year in the West End, Robin Herford’s has stood the test of time in atmosphere, illusion and controlled horror and embarks on another tour of UK Theatres. But…
Will it be Break A Leg? Or LEG IT!!

This is my favourite show ever! I’ve seen it 11 times. I must say it’s a lot better in the west end with a smaller house. The more intimate the theatre the more effective this show is

Wow! 2 stars! Sorry to hear you weren't impressed. I have seen the West End production twice and thoroughly enjoyed it both visits. The intensity and suspense that slowly built up and exploded in the second act was incredible. Maybe it has something to do with size of the house? How many seats does the Curve have? The Fortune is very small and quite intimate which certainly helps create a spooky atmosphere. Also interesting to hear that you thought it should be played without an interval. Apparently they did this in London for a short while but have since gone back to the two act version.

I agree, I went to see this in a very small theatre with my mum and it was insanely good. So well done, that when a woman couldn't contain herself and shouted "don't go in there" no one laughed, because inside we all agreed!

Scarborough is legendary for being the starting point of many Alan Ayckbourn plays.

I really loved the Set with it reliant on the imagination and the little suggestions of a location through the lighting.

Thanks for your honest opinion. I have a vivid imagination and I'm easily spooked so this works for me. How awful re phones going off! When you feel strongly, strong words are definitely called for 😊

I went to this and The Mousetrap a few years ago out of curiosity to see why they were so long running (and perhaps the only way I will ever see the interiors of those two theatres). I was terribly underwhelmed and have to concur with your views. I've seen worse shows, but it had nothing to recommend it to a regular theatre goer. I believe it is also a set text for GCSE English, thus generating a ready audience for repeat tours as well as the never ending west end run. Very funny mid review rant Nathan! You feel for performers who have spent ages building the atmosphere only to have the tension destroyed by an idiot with a loudly ringing phone who invariably cannot quickly find it in their bag or know how to cancel it.

I’ve seen it years ago with my high school. It wasn’t this production tho. Because they had maybe…three props? They had to “ham it up” to make you want to stick to it. It was awesome.

Have to agree with you, found the show tedious. Highlight was when one of the props ended up at my feet & the The Actor came and collected it.

Agreed, wondered what all the fuss and longevity of the piece was about (when I saw it in the West End a few years ago) - just didn't get it. The only thing that made it memorable was the solicitors trousers split at the seams early on in the first act and it became immensely distracting as the act lumbered along!

I probably won’t bother with this production (I’ve been spoiled with Cabaret and West Side Story (twice!) recently). But I do enjoy you boys giving your analysis and discussion. You’re lovely.
