Wool is hydrophobic, doesn't get mold and is probably the safest insulator in case if fire, which is actually it's strongest point👍. Fire safety is probably among the most important aspects of both boats as well as mobile homes.
The cork boards in the panels also protect against solar heat gains in sunny conditions (plastic insulation, glass or rock wool will not stop solar heat gains. Spray cork is good for reducing condensation, it will offer a small protection against thermal bridge depending on the thickness on the inner face, but your final wood based linings will add to that for you.

Love this project. I am wondering about the cork as insulator though. What is the total layer thickness? Total insulation value is determined by thermal conductivity and layer thickness. Thermal conductivity should be ok though not the best, but I would worry about the layer thickness. My van is going to have 9mm armaflex as base layer. 9mm is already on the limit with condensation when you go to areas where it will be freezing. Thermal conductivity is about 10% better on armaflex than on cork (but that is pure cork; don't know about this mixture). So you would need at least 10mm layer thickness to prevent condensation in freezing conditions and 20°C with 70% humidity inside. Fingers crossed for you that you don't get a drippy van when you encounter some cold nights.
When you do the boat, try using polyester masking tape rather that crepe paper masking tape. It doesn't conform as well on curves, so you may need to use a combination of the two, but it is more robust and easier to remove in one piece. Most crepe paper masking tapes don't like water, they soak it up and become difficult to remove without tearing into small pieces.

Must have been a bit of a shock going from the warmth of the Caribbean to the snow in France. Interesting to see how you are insulating the inside of your van as I have not insulated my house truck, which is just a bit larger than your one. It is very hot in the summer and cold in the winter, however I do have half carpet and half cork tiles on the floor which helps to keep it a bit warmer in the winter. Fortunately I do not have to live in it for any length of time as I just use it when I go out to film documentaries, which tends to be more in the summer. I also have it set up with a complete editing studio, including surround sound, that I can use anywhere with a 230 volt portable generator along with 12 volt batteries for the sound and lighting, charged by the truck alternator.
Its looking good Odd !🎉 I am wondering why you did not spray the divider wall as well , since most of the cold comes from the uninsulated cab and glass area. For the floor it's unnecessary to screw the plywood down to straps of wood. Simply glue down sheets of 3/4" foam board and glue the plywood to that. NO SCREWS, not only saves money (screws are costly, always come loose, and rust if they get wet, which they always do) but is much faster and easier too do. You really don't even need the glue, but it does keep the floor from squeaking. Duca I would really like to see a before, “middle” and after of the panels with sound deadening matts, i.e. the sound before you pasted the matt, then with the matt before you corked and lastly the sound with the combination of matt and cork.

Great to see you using sparay cork. I've been interested in using spray cork for quite some time but it doesn't seem to be common knowledge. Hadn't come across a DIY recipe before, might have to have a go. What acrylic glue and binder did you use?

The cork actually looks pretty cool too! I reckon if we get a van I would do the same as this, I hate the fiberglass insulation too. I definitely don't miss crawling through the ceilings and running cables back home!

Duca, a trim tool would've made your life a lot easier when taking those hardboard panels off. The Sail Hub van has a UK registration plate with the steering wheel on the correct side. Your test panel sounded like a wobble board. Sikaflex is indeed your friend. It is the best stuff and reasonably priced. I used the white Sikaflex to reseal a caravan skylight. The repair video is on my own channel. Wool is the perfect insulating material. I used to work in the wool textile industry (as did my dad). The city of my birth was known as the "wool capital".

Here is a thought for the future... Try "Kiwigrip" instead of the cork. Just rolling it on seems to be a lot less work than spraying the cork and it should result in a good thermal barrier. (Also "Total Tread")
Hey there, so awesome you guys filmed the whole process!! One of the few out there :) I’m about to insulate my van with cork as well and was doubting between 0.5-1mm or 1-2mm cork granulate. What would you recommend? And I also saw you changed the recipe a bit during the process, so less water was the main lesson right? Cheeers!
Both are great. Cork is cheaper, flexible with the changes of temperature, doesn’t get mold, it’s easier and healthier to apply. Spray foam if not done correctly can work with the variations of temperature also spray foam insulation mold problems are quite common as I read.

Wool is naturally flame resistant and offers a greater level of fire safety than other fibres. In addition, wool does not melt, drip or stick to the skin when it burns.
Spray on cork... Your going to have to build it up to quite a thickness...to insulate well but it will quickly build up to prevent condensation and dampen noise.. But ground up recycled cork is a good idea.. 😉 Get on with it Winters comming ...then the heat 😂😂

It is too humid and cold? that is a big problem. Humidity is really bad. And don't close it over night live both doors open to ventilate. If it is cold leave it to dry for two days in between coats. Other then that it is pretty straight forward. hehehe
The Cyber 48 aluminum catamaran that I'm planning on building calls for spray foam. You can purchase your own spray foam kit and do it yourself rather than hire a company to do it. I don't really see the advantage of cork for insulation over spray foam unless you spray a very thick coat of cork but the cork and glue weighs more than spray foam which would defeat any benefit. Lightweight equals performance on a boat. Could you explain in detail the difference between cork and spray foam. You wouldn't want to use wool on a boat or any moist environment.

@@OddLifeCrafting Hi Roberta, Polystyrene spray foam is the same stuff that coffee cups are made out of. They also use it in making lunch boxes, ice chest, floats for docks and in the construction industry they use it for foundations which are called ICF or insulated concrete forms and the exterior walls and roofs called SIP or structural insulated panels. The polystyrene foam is waterproof where as the pink or blue foam board is not waterproof. The pink or blue foam board is not a closed cell product like polystyrene is. A closed cell is what you want for insulation and waterproof applications. They make another lightweight product that you can spray but it's not a closed cell product and in the construction industry for insulation, it provides some R value but not nearly as much as a closed cell foam offers and is mostly used as a sound proofing product for music studios and stuff like that. I would bet that the stuff your hearing about that gets mold behind it might be a non closed cell foam product. I'm not sure exactly what foam your referring to but would really like to know. Have you watched the video where Sailing Life on Jupiter talks about the building of their aluminum catamaran? He explains it a little bit in that video. I work with the stuff all the time in the building industry and know a lot about it but not everything. I'd love it if you did a full break down on both products and explain it to us because I've never heard of using cork as an insulator before. Thanks.

The problem with the Wool is that it traps moisture and can cause bad mold issues. A all natural product called Rock Wool is a much better choice, it does not hold moisture, is all natural and has a much higher R Value for the thermal properties that you need in a van... ROCKWOOL insulation is a rock-based mineral fiber insulation comprised of Basalt rock and Recycled Slag. Basalt is a volcanic rock (abundant in the earth), and slag is a by-product of the steel industry. The minerals are melted and spun into fibers. It is essentially a recycled product.
@@OddLifeCrafting True if the wool is open, but I will disagree with what happens when you trap the wool behind an enclosed panel... My point with rock wool is that it is a natural product, has a higher r-value, will not absorb water, is made from waste products and it will not burn... And the Wool itself will not mold, but any organic material in the enclosed area will be effected including the vans steel, which no matter how hard you try will rust if exposed to moisture for prolonged periods...

I would go with Rockwool instead of actual wool. Rockwool is not flammable but real wool is. Rockwool will not soak up water, but real wool will get soggy and start to mold and mildew. Bugs and vermin like wool, but they don't like Rockwool.
