We test Korea's rear-wheel drive performance car on twisty canyon roads to see if it can handle the heat of the competition. The uphill run is a great way to showcase the Genesis Coupe's turbo power delivery while still exposing its flaws in some nasty ass technical corners. Will the 8-speed automatic suck? Can a grand touring vehicle be track ready yet still luxurious at the same time? Some call it an upgrade - the 0-60 drag time is pretty fast. You'll find out in this review - all done in a POV one take.
Also we got air time, call us the rally car. See how it does on the mountain pass / backroad.
We want to comparison review its competitors in the future - including the G35, 370z, 350z, FRS, Mustang, Camaro, and more.
5 minutes isn't enough for an in-depth review - feel free to leave a question and I'll do my best to answer it!

I have a 13 r-spec 2.0 and had no problems with it. It's been amazing tbh👌🏻 plus i never experienced transmission problems. Everything's pretty good. My place has hella traffic and didn't really wanna get the 3.8 cus of that. A 2.0 as a daily is good enough👌🏻

When I worked at Hyundai we did sooo many engine swaps on these, but even more on the 3.8 v6's. Some came in with 3k miles on the clock and rod knocking lol. Also the rubber adapters from driveshaft to the diff will fail if you drift and your driveshaft falls off

I've seen people drift these with no issues though?

It would be great if you had a way to setup a camera on the uphill crests, to see how the car looks hopping around.

Of course! I'll try to do flybys whenever I get the chance - most of these reviews are done in one run so it's tricky to set the camera man's position and timing

are these genesis coupes really reliable? i live in New jersey its alot of pot holes. I plan to get one like 2015 or 16 2.0t automatic. but not sure if I should get it from a official Hyundai dealer or private dealer or private seller.

I have a 13, they only made 2.0ts from 2010-2014. From 2010 to 2012, the 2.0ts made hardly 200hp. 210 max. From 2013 and 2014, they made 275hp. I have a 2.0t auto, and have put almost 30k miles on it in 11 months. It’s fun to drive, super fun. It’s decently quick and extremely smooth. You can actually go fast in these, these absolutely murder brzs in straights. If you have any questions, let me know.

Angel bluerider I live in Oklahoma, the potholes here are worse than you can imagine. I’ve bent a wheel going over them, potholes here are beyond the worst you can imagine and the roads here eat your tires. My gen has held up great, no real rattles. Driving on a smooth road it’s really good, ok bumpy roads you can expect a squeak or two but I’ve never had any problems with anything. Nothing has fell off, it’s all held up super good.

@@JACXOUB so you didnt have any major issues during those 30k miles? I really want a 13 2.0t
@JACXOUB
@JACXOUB 5 лет назад
manny g no issues whatsoever at all. Currently have a bov and fixing to straight pipe or tomorrow (keeping resonator). Any questions, I’m open to answer. It’s fun. When I was wanting to buy a car, I was very very set on brzs. After driving the gen, I noticed just how much faster and more fun this can be. So happy I chose this, nothing feels better than cruising, slowly rolling into boost and having the turbo absolutely scream

so out of a 10 what would you rate the 2.0t gen?
@RidgeChaser
@RidgeChaser 8 лет назад
About 6/10, the car is fun for casual driving in mid-high speed corners, and its very comfortable as long as it's not the back seats. The con is the automatic transmission - it's unpredictable even in 'manual mode' (and don't even bother with sports mode, Hyundai REALLY fucked up). The main reason I wouldn't rate the Gen higher is because it get excessive brake fade after about 6 minutes and the oil overheats due to the turbo. I don't think it's meant to be a competitive car, just something enjoyable that can be used as a daily driver. Really depends on what you want to use the car for - the rating is just my personal preference. However I'd give the manual a 3/10 since it's the worst transmission I've ever driven. Not being a hater, if you test drive it you'll know what I mean.

@feeblemind 8 лет назад
can agree I test drove manual the auto is way better. Hopefully you get your hands on a 3.8 Track spec model I honestly feel the Turbos were complete junk and the V6 was the way to go after driving both. Almost night and day difference for me personally. Probably why they got rid of the turbo model.

I'm planning to get a manual version (probably the 2.0T) but comments about the transmission kind of drag me down. Can you tell me your thoughts about it? Why is it so bad (or not)?

the manuals are nice, but they have more quirks than the autos. There is 2nd gear lock past 6k rpm (For a launch for example). Other gears lock out too.
