HMS Tamar is the first Royal Navy ship to get a dazzle camouflage paint job since the Second World War.
The dazzle camouflage paint scheme was introduced towards the end of the First World War, aiming to confuse submariners peering through periscopes and making it hard for them to identify ships.
So, why was this new patrol ship painted this way?

I really like the new/old dazzle camo paint scheme, it's arks back to our naval heritage and make them stand out on the high seas, useful again pirates and illegal fishing trawlers/boats, especially in the Indo-Pacific region where she'll be passing through on a freedom of navigation patrol.

Used to pore over photos of dazzle warships in encyclopedias. Also remember ocean liners painted same when used for transporting troops across the Atlantic. No reason not to use it, so thumbs up!

well the navy has new ships that will need paint, queue of ships that are need of refit and repair, so this is the right time for uniform the feet and give it a fresh look in a stylish fashion. if you can't make something new, then bring back something old and forgotten. plus today less and less ships are using black, so must have been a good deal for old stockpiles

@squirepraggerstope3591
@squirepraggerstope3591 3 года назад
Very nice, but what the Batch2 River Class ships, HMS Tamar included, need far more is a sensibly effective and significant armament/sensor upgrade programme. Permitting them to realise their innate potential as vessels built from the outset as serious, combat-capable units; NOT as mere OPVs limited to, at most, covert or constabulary operations. Which is why, of course, they've already cost us c£140m per unit as opposed to the c£50m per unit of the baseline commercial design. So time they were enabled to assume the mid-to-high level roles their specifications/build as enhanced survivability combat units and their resulting high cost, all imply (If we need extra OPVs, another 5 units of an updated variant of the Batch1 Rivers will comfortably suffice and can likely be acquired for just c£200m 'the lot') Accordingly, imho the Batch2 ships should be reconfigured NOW as blue/green-water/littoral ops units optimised for protection of merchant traffic and/or service as additional point/local AA/M and ASuW close escorts for amphibious formations (centred around the Albion Class LPDs/2 new LPHs/Bay Class RFAs/projected Littoral Strike Ships etc). I'd suggest the following; 2 x 3cell ExLS for 24 x CAMM Sea Ceptor +T997 Artisan 3D Radar 1 x 57mm Bofors Mk110 2 x 30mm ASCG + LMM 2 x Minigun Telescopic Hangar to permit sustained onboard operation of 1 x AW159 Wildcat HMA2 helicopter (c/w 12.7mm MG + Weapon Wing for either 4 x MBDA Sea Venom / 20 x LMM / 2 x MBDA Sea Venom + 10 x LMM / 2 x Stingray ASW Torpedo) + relevant Soft-kill decoy / jamming installations This would imho convert these excellent but currently very limited (1 x 30mm ASCG) vessels into formidable vessels deployable in a whole range of demanding roles/situations (eg merchant escort through the Strait of Hormuz) against sub-peer but still dangerous opposition or, along with other units, to discharge specific functions within a larger o/a screen, even against peer-level opponents. The RN is one of the ARMED services and its primary role is to protect and extend British interests and influence. Against major opponents if needed and including by resort to deadly force. ALL of its ships should therefore be among the most capable of their respective type and in the case of those designed and built as WARships, be able to kill any enemy that opposes this country in arms in as large a number as can feasibly be enabled. So if anyone wants us to build ships whose principle asset is a great big mission bay for "hoomanitariyun" tasks, capable of stowing 200,000 Teddy-and-Tealight 'solidarity vigil' kits and half a million CDs of 'Kumbaya', then tough titty. Try the Germans, cause most here are not remotely concerned. We do not want to see a vessel armed with one 30mm gun being sent to oppose, say, the mad Iranian theocrats' terrorist guard units' fast attack craft. Or otherwise have to deploy at least a frigate or maybe even send a billion quids-worth of T45, maybe to see her end up playing tag at only a mile range with that or some other 3rd world cesspit's old but still rather heavily armed gunboats. We want something corvette-sized, appropriately affordable, that can free up higher-end units like those frigates and destroyers for more appropriate jobs, but that is still robust enough and with a relevant weapons and sensor fit making it an odds on bet that if challenged/threatened, she and her crew remain overwhelmingly likely to get home in one piece. While having left as MANY terrorists as necessary (or in some circumstances, even as many as possible) floating face down in their wake!

Probably a similar paint scheme not exactly the same. Look at the WWI versions designed by British artist Edward Wadsworth who later went on to paint dazzle ships on canvas. Dazzle attracted the notice of artists such as Picasso, who claimed that Cubists like himself had invented it. Briton Edward Wadsworth, who was an artist that supervised the camouflaging of over 2,000 ships during the First World War went on to paint such ship after WWI as works on canvas.
