Hey guys, should they have anchored in the middle of the canal to avoid the Sea Wall? Let us know what you think. 👍

no, they can steer by throttle. Engines were barely turned to the starboard, this is an inexperienced captain.

NO. Never anchor in an inlet/canal and the water is too rough. Use the twin screws to steer. 🤦🏻‍♂️
@Army4Runner
@Army4Runner Год назад
No Sir. If they anchored in the canal/channel, they would just be an obstruction to other vessels and possibly cause a greater emergency. Also, like another poster mentioned, they could have steered with the twin screws and held their position away from the wall while help was en route.
@nobskafriend
@nobskafriend Год назад
Anchoring would create a hazard to other boats, I second the idea of using the throttles on the twin engines to steer, and hopefully avoid hitting wall, but not sure if there is enough distance between engines to effectively steer, but points out why one should try that in non-emergency time, just in case you did ever lose steering!
@nobskafriend
@nobskafriend Год назад
Mystery boat #1 is a Back Cove , built in Maine, one of their recent outboard models. The boat that lost steering and hit the wall demonstrates that if you have twin engines you should learn/practice steering using the 2 throttles , not perfect steering, but might allow limping to get to a marina or safer place to get out of the traffic.
@graphisnoblis

Many 30ft + boat manufacturers now offer joystick controls coupled with electronic steering. If it fails, it becomes “locked” and you have no further control of it. I would never get a boat with one of these systems.

@potatolew4495
@potatolew4495 Год назад
@paulym5814 you can maneuver a vessel with twins using the clutch (forward or reverse) and accelerating port or starboard. I have held a 500 ton master lisence for the past 21 years. I once ran a 90 foot steel dragger 110 miles that I lost both steering motors in. It was a dingle engine, I used the outrigger stabilizer birds to steer. Dropped either port or starboard to keep proper heading.

That was physically painful to watch. Throw out the anchor? Yes. Use twin props to steer? Yes. Put out fenders? Also yes. Throw a line from the USCG boat and put it on a forward cleat to pull off the seawall instead of ramming them harder on it while trying to reach the tow hook? Also yes!

I believe point pleasant canal is in NJ, but your point is valid anyway, for any body of water. If one is going to buy a boat, one needs to learn how to operate that boat in the conditions in which one intends to operate the boat. RU-vid is a great resource for learning how to handle not just tricky situations but the basics of operating a boat. There is no replacement however, for actual experience and practice, practice, practice.

Very difficult to setup a side row in those conditions, much safer to do a standard stern to like they did, although I might not have chosen to use the skiff-hook to the bow eye hook-up. Would prefer to use bow cleats, to avoid needing to reach under/between the boats to attach towline, but these Coasties practice all the time and would pick quickest, safest hook-up method I’m sure.

It was a joke and a nightmare. Now, under Homeland they are finally being treated the way they should. Although I am strongly against them operating outside of US waters. I don’t believe they should be in Taiwan etc… but that’s just me. We do fall under the USN when the USN wants us in time of war.

As a curious guy with 0 to none experience and knowledge about inlets, rough waters and outboards boating, just a tad of sailing. Could somebody explain me how are you supposed to "walk" through this? I would assume that a rough sea inlet is like a very bumpy road where both the car and the bumps are moving. I would also think that the longer a boat is, the more stable through the waves but with very high walls of water that length doesn't get you very far right? Quoting Jeremy Clarkson , SPEED AND POWER! is always the solution but watching some videos, just a few center consoles with 4 quadrillion hp can rip through the inlet where the roughness is 4/10 because I think of those boats as trophy trucks, that at very high speeds can eat those bumps like nothing. Long answers are appreciated, I have some freetime and I am eager to learn.
