POLICE YELL AT BOATER IN POINT PLEASANT CANAL! Strong Currents and Waves Cause Trouble for Boats

The current was ripping today in the Point Pleasant Canal -- creating waves and hazards for boaters going under the bridge.
This canal is long, deep, and narrow, making the currents very strong. If you are in a smaller boat, you may have some trouble.
Enjoy as boats go in and out of the canal and pass each other under the bridge.

I am the last boat to go under the bridge at the 19-second mark. I felt so bad for the guy in the blue top Sea-Ray. The current coming through the bridge was no joke, and I need to power up. I yelled at him to do the same. My wake was pretty big and swamped him. I made sure he was safe and was ready to turn around if he needed help. Although it's no wake, you have the right to maintain 100% control of your boat at whatever speed it takes. 20-25 kt South wind that day.

I totally get the idea of not wanting someone riding on the bow of a boat thru the canal, and specifically in what is the nastiest section, that guy was safer there at that point then he was trying to move to the stern while pitching and rolling like that. Its bad to have a dangerous situation but worse to make something more dangerous trying to fix the first issue...

@alexkitner5356
@alexkitner5356 Год назад
@@whdbnrm3023 I don't know that I'd call a mayday since that might elicit an emergency type response from the marine unit and other resources. I would tell the guy in the bow to stay put and if the troopers want to discuss it someplace calm then they're welcome to come have that conversation but my response would be that I'm the master of that vessel and ultimately responsible for the safety of those aboard and therefore I get the final call on what option is best for the well-being of those aboard. If they were to site a law on this it would be section 13:82-1.13 which says "the operator of a vessel shall not allow any person to ride in any position that would endanger life or limb". Thats fairly open ended when it comes to boats and what positions might endanger life or limb. For example, I was trained to keep people from sitting on or doing things near the transom while running, the idea being that if a person gets knocked off the stern and nobody sees it then it may take some time before anyone notices that person isn't down in a berth sleeping or in the head by which point its nearly impossible to know where or when it happened or to render quick aid, but is the transom considered unsafe by this law cause i see plenty of people sitting near transoms. We have all these pontoon boats around now, why aren't they stopping them in the bay when there's kids along the front rail? One slip and not only do they go over but the pontoons will channel them right into the propeller with potentially lethal consequences. In my mind that person moving back from the bow is becoming more endangered and the order is requesting me to at minimum commit a more gross violation of that statute than them being there to begin with.

Thank you for the PP Canal video. I wish you made this video 45 years ago when the 88 and Bridge ave crossings were the original wooden bridges. Now that was a crazy ride. My neighbor back in 1973 had a 35 ft Chris Craft that the bridges had to open for. He was waiting on a Southbound bridge opening and somehow the boat turned sideways and got sucked under the Bridge Ave bridge. He jumped off the flying bridge of the boat a split second before it hit and was ripped off the superstructure. Those were the days. The canal is a piece of cake now. Had presance of mind to restart in netrule an throw motor to reverse spinning cable off an limping boat now 3/4 full of water . So much so 6 gal gas tank floating on rear seat to island outside entrance by hospital . After dealing boat an reafirming never go through there at tide change as cable floated up from firsness of currant again . Lesson learned

Currents like these are no joke. That waterway cop is understandably nervous. On a day like this you'd wear a PFD on my boat until we're well clear of the canal and inlet or I'd take you back to the ramp. To be bow-riding with a leg in the water is asking to be dragged overboard where the hull could crack your head, break your ribs or an arm or leg, and you'd still have to avoid the prop. Odds of rescue given the current, an injury, and no PFD are minimal. Even uninjured with no PFD your odds are not good. Wearing a PFD injured or not it could still be a long, difficult rescue. Boats coming in/ out with the current can't just stop in a narrow waterway like this, and they may not be able to avoid you floating in the channel.

Before the Oyster Creek Power Plant shut down an artificial reef was building at the end of the cooling water canal discharge. The water was about 80 degrees F all year round. We were getting sponges and catching tropical fish. I got a very nice Triggerfish for my saltwater tank. The marine life would make it way up the Gulf Stream after storms. We found a plastic milk crate 20 miles out off the inlet that had fish and seaweed in side it it was overturned an floating. Pleasure boater are the most dangerous. Former USCG.

That's a pretty intense current! Is that just tidal between the Manasquan River and the Boat Head Harbour? If it is then I guess it does this in each direction twice a day? Looking on Google Maps I can see this canal must be acting like an equalising valve between the river and the harbour. One hell of a ride for the boaties!
@alexkitner5356
@alexkitner5356 Год назад
There's a difference between tides in the bay on one end and river on the other so the water flies through there. The ocean doesnt have a big difference at the two inlets but the canal is much closer to the Manasquan while the tide has to work its way from Barnegat thru miles of shallow bay to reach the other end. The tide is always rushing to catch up basically, there's a three hour difference between the Manasquan Inlet and the canal, a full half a cycle, in a two mile distance. When it was first built it changed the dynamics of the water so much that it caused the Manasquan inlet to go dry. The inlet had to be fortified with jetties and then excavated to reopen it.

3:18 Having the magna still attached to the bow rail was a nice touch. Bonus points for having the fenders out!

I am wondering if this canal had a second name of Manasquan canal years ago? I lived and was brought up on that canal in Point Pleasant. I think this is the bridge up by the river rather than the bay. The bridges were different back then.
@ShoreBoats
@ShoreBoats 2 года назад
Yeah, I believe it used to be called the Bay Head - Manasqaun Canal. The bridge in the video is the one by the bay. Thanks for watching!

@@ShoreBoats I think because of the traffic passing over the bridge it the bridge closest to the river not the bay. Am I wrong?? We lived on Shore Blvd in Bay Head Shores. Love you videos they make me Home Sick.

A couple of things I don't get. If you are in bad waves, trying to get off the bow in those conditions is less safe then just staying there. The guy struggled to get off safely. Secondly, why no PWCs in the canal?? In rough water, I would much rather be in a PWC than any boat under 20 ft. You have much more control - or at least in the ones I ride.

In reality most recreational boats are not very sea worthy. Open bow boats are an accident waiting to happen but seem to be all the rage, even in off shore boats. Simply doesn't make much sense to place your life in jeopardy with such poorly designed water craft.

At 5:33 that small fishing boat is doing the smartest thing. He’s tucked right in behind a bigger boat whose wake is smoothing the water.

Going into such strong waters and it seems like no one was wearing a life jacket geez no matter how good of a swimmer you are getting plunged into those waters could mean death there's almost no way to rescue someone in that water they would be swept away pretty fast. It looks like some of the boats at times are like just standing still.

The boats going with the tide (in this case the outgoing tide going left to right) always get bounced around more than those going into the tide. Also that section of the canal has some of the worst standing waves.

I can't get over the number of little kids in the boats without life vests! So-called parents too lazy to do their job or just don't care. Infuriating! I'll never forget when my Dad pulled an 18 mo. old from the water that had drowned in a canal, he was depressed and heart broken for months seeing that precious child like that. Everyone please do everything you can and take every measure to protect your children around the water for all the "what ifs". Because you never know when or how it will happen and that is why they are called accidents. Please protect your precious priceless children.
