Everyone expected Lionel Messi was gonna return to Barcelona but in terms of the financial climate of the football club, I think it was a move that would be risky for him and for both parties. Lionel Messi left Barcelona in an unexpected way 2 summers ago, because the club found it difficult to register his new contract and while he accepted a small pay cut it wasn't enough for him to return to the team. He's been linked with a return to Barcelona in recent months and if he goes back same situation, it'll be about the money he'll get paid even if he takes another salary cut, and they might find it difficult to even register him because many players have to reduce their wages so that one player gets registered in the team and for Lionel Messi going to Inter Miami was a better move because the only thing they'll pay him is wages and besides he's won everything there is to win in football and capped his stellar career with a World Cup so he has nothing left to prove, he can chill in the USA before his career comes to a close.

ESPN: Messi going to MLS(at 35) makes so much sense and it’s good for SOCCER! ESPN: Ronaldo can score a hat-trick every game and no one will care! Story of their careers. I knew this coming. They RIDICULED Ronaldo to get away from the toxic environment in Europe at THIRTY EIGHT. Messi has been great past years, but Ronaldo at his age scored 100+ goals winning every trophy in Italy and MVPs. Ronaldo going to Saudi at 38 was being laughed at but Messi leaving THREE years younger is getting comforted.

I don't think there's any question that living in Miami trumps Saudi Arabia, especially for a South American/Spanish family. But maybe the biggest driver is that Copa America will be held in America next year... Messi has given this world more than enough, especially with the exclamation point that was his performance in Qatar, and while he has as much freedom to choose his next step...I'm glad he didn't follow to current herd.
