I think because a "storied" franchise like the lakers with two mega stars were competing for and winning titles at that time, the media didn't have to rely on Jordan to keep people engaged. They also didn't have to worry about clicks, and online views, just ratings on TV. So it made it a little easier in that regard to not rely on Jordan for views/ratings. Now if you're talking about Jordan's last year with the Bulls, yes that was there. BUT, Jordan and the bulls were also still playing through the end of the playoffs, so that is a little bit different.
