It's always interesting what starts our multi tool journey. I never knew how important my PST2 was until I lost it. Now I have quite a collection.

Watching this video is very nostalgic and brought up a lot of good memories and regrets. My first multi tool ever was a PST clone I got from my dad when I was 12. Used that thing for everything. I felt like the coolest kid in the block. When I was older and was working at home depot, I dug it back up. I've since upgraded so there was no "need" for it so I gave it away to a co-worker. I really regret doing that. Now, I gave my 2-year old son a plastic multi tool and trying to teach him to be a handiman, and I still reflect back on that tool my dad gave me.

I love how fantastically genuine your answer is. It takes real integrity to be that honest and open, instead of just going with the “cool” answer. About twelve years before I got bitten by the knife enthusiast bug, I had a job in a warehouse. The knife I used was a hella-cheap box cutter made by Husky. The detent and action were stiff as can be. It was made of cheap, generic materials. But despite me carrying my Spyderco Dragonfly 2 for three years now, I think that old box cutter still has it beat by about a literal mile of actual material cut. I have a channel where I actually upload content (this channel I’m using here is fir watching other people’s videos and making comments) where I discuss what exactly the term “EDC” means, and I explain that fashion sense inevitably factors into what we carry and use. Vanity will always be some slight factor in the tools we carry and use, especially if we think someone else is looking. That’s why I appreciate your honesty so much.

I know this video is about a couple of years old. I have to say that I’ve been carrying a leatherman since I was 21 years old. 20 years later, a leatherman can still be found on my person today. The difference is I added a Spyderco knife on me as my EDC. I can’t see myself without a multitool on me if I’m going out anywhere. I find myself reaching for my leatherman more than my wallet. lol. Great video. God bless.

....and this is why I watch your videos. It is about the feeling as much as the function and possibly more than the function. Thank you for this video. It sums up so many others thoughts about what a multitool means and the memories it brings. BTW, my first was a Swiss Army knife that I ordered out of a magazine when I was 10 years old. And yes, I checked the mailbox for three months until it finally came.

My mother had a Spartan as gift from my aunt who lives in Germany. It was the imprinter of my multitool obsession. I didn’t even know there were model names then. Later when I wanted an SAK with this and that additional tools then I searched up and learnt that Swisschamp had most of the tools that I might want ever. Then there was the film ‘Speed’ in which Keanu Reeves used a plier based multitool, and then I saw a PST displayed at a shop in an arcade I thought It was the one. Only later I learned that it was a Supertool that Keanu Reeves had used in the movie. PST is the multitool that I used most frequently if not the scissors in the Swisschamp.

ahh, the buck tool! Was one of my first multitools as well, given to me from my grandfather. Carried that thing all through my high school and college jobs. It actually helped me land my first job out of college. ( had to bring "an object that means a lot to you" to the interview) and I couldn't think of a better show and tell piece that came with a history all its own. This all sounds very familiar! I got my first MT for Christmas in 1996, a Leatherman Super tool. I was in high school at the time and carried it in my belt every day. Loved it. But then I got a Wave for my birthday some years later, when I was in the army. The Wave really improved on the ease of use and the ST fall into the shadows a bit too long. Not sure what happened to it. Really wish I still had it for its sentimental value. Still have the OG Wave though and that’s a keeper for sure :) It’s something like a “memory stick” at this point. Thanks for the video and sharing your MT origins story!

@@maxlvledc 🤣yepp!! Unbeatable. And just for the fun of sharing... My first was a Victorinox spartan "economy" (the one without tweezers and toothpick in the scales). I got it as a present from my uncle when I was 12, and still have it - and carry it, from time to time! - though I broke the can opener when I was about 17 while trying to undo a very stubborn Philips screw on my "Vespa" scooter... Misusing it, in that case, but still the rest of the tools look and work great!

I miss having a Juice S2. But It broke, was irreparable, so I sent it into leatherman and it was replaced with a rebar. The rebar is okay, but it's a shame they no longer make the Juice series. The S2 is basically the perfect EDC tool for many people. (I willfully accepted the rebar replacement though. Better to have a tool I can use than one I can't)

I've been carrying an S2 for 15(?) years. One of the springs for the pliers broke on my first one. Good to know that Leatherman won't repair it. I think i'll repar mine with a couple of pennies wedged into the slot and then smooth them to the handle.

Yeah. Leatherman have completely lost their way with their smaller multitools. I still have a CS4 and am always nervous using it now… in case it finally gives up and I have to replace it with one of their current, less sophisticated and less fully featured offerings. Why on earth did they stop the juice series. Which idiot at Leatherman is making their decisions for them?

Those memories are key and so important! I have three sons ages 12, 10, 7 and I try to take them on adventures as often as I can and I’ve introduced them to multi tools and knifes and teaching them to try to be as prepared for whatever whenever and I always smile when I think of the stories their going to tell their children and the things their going to do with them 😎 recently we’ve been taking weekend day trips to abandoned asylums and learning the history which is usually terrible and exploring what’s left of dead sites that once was very much alive. Love your content sorry for the rant🤓 take nothing but photos leave nothing but footprints and make memories!

Great video! I really like the focus on our memories and stories with our multi tools! It’s such a cool thing to carry around, and I remember getting the leather man surge my 10th birthday! I’ve had that thing for 13 years now and I still use it every time I invent or build something! It had so many tools and was perfect for doing all the spontaneous little kid ideas you have! Honestly it probably inspired me to start building things at an early age and shaped the hobbies I love! I’m only 20 now so I can’t image what some other people’s connections and stories are with their pocket knives and multi tools and all that! Insane to think about, this video was great thanks man!

I also have a Bucklite tool, model 355, with its original sheath...I bought it to pair it with my Buck 112...the second multi tool I purchased was the PST...with it's original black leather sheath with "Leatherman" embossed in gold letters on it...I hope that you will bring your kids(if you are married & have a family) into what you do by starting them with your first knife...you have an excellent collection...the best part to me is that you are really into multi tools & actually use them...your modding ability is also a skill you can pass on...one of your videos which is my favorite is your restoration & repair of the 1st Gen Surge...I'm sure your friend must be very happy with it...that was a beautiful job...it must be very satisfying to be able to take a tool like that & make it new again...good job!

Leatherman Wave for me. I have been daily carrying it for 8 years now
@clodvonclout
@clodvonclout Год назад
The playdoh multitool is the best! I never knew it existed, if I was given one I may have had the exact same feeling as you did. My first tool given to me was a Victorinox tinker handme down from my Dad. That started my journey. But for me a multitool is not complete without pliers and in 2001 I saw the Original Wave and Juice S2, Juice XE6 in a shop. As a student I can only get one and it was a long decision between the wave and juice S2. I went with the original wave. 22 years later. I still have not found a leatherman worthy to replace the original wave. Yes there are improvements done on the current series, but not enough to replace the original wave. The rebar was very close, but it did not come with a diamond file. Shall I loose the original wave, the rebar might most probably be the closest solution. As I find the regular 3d philips screwdriver to be more versatile and it can access recessed screws. The curl almost got me to purchase and take a gamble on the bit drivers with shorter reach, but the non locking tools turned me off. If they made it locking tools. I would have purchased it. As I got older, the original wave started to feel heavy. So I tandem carry a Leatherman P4 and Victorninox Manager on my keychain. Both of them supplement each other very much. But the P4 pliers are so light duty that I can't do much real work with it. I ended up with a SOG powerpint. In a nutshell the size, weight and usability plus locking tools hands down the best tool selection I have seen in the market right now. I cut off the nail notch of the bottle opener to covert it to a flat screwdriver/pry tool making it complete. Although it has the best tool section, they are not the best expereince. It gets the job done, but the experience is terrible. I don't like the knife shape, poor screwdrivers, poor scissors, etc. Again given the weight and tool selection I accepted the limitation and lived with it. As it's job is to get things done in a pinch. If leatherman made a tool the size of the SOG powerpint I would definitely be getting one and throw away the SOG. Now comes the Arc. It is already perfect except for the price. And given the taste of the SOG powerpint's portability I no longer desire the size. I am going to take my chances and wait. I believe an Arc P2/Curl version should come out. An updated skeletool Or the best of them all a revamped Juice series as this is the only thing missing in Leatherman's current line up. Put locking tools on them and I believe they will be the best selling EDC replacing the powerpint/powerlitre. I have been waiting for 22 years so waiting a few more years shouldn't matter. Come on Leatherman. I have feeling that starting this year will be the release of the next generation leathermans. So I will wait.

It was facinating then but looks premitive with current & mordern version. Designs have progress since then so have the prices. Only collectors has more than one multitool as for the rest of us, we just can afford one, maybe two & make it the "best" multitool of all. Great memory lane matey. Cheers.!

Also i would like to say, thanks to your videos i bought style ps. And i enjoy it every day since. I hated it because the handles curved outward uncomfortably when open, but it was all I had so I used it and got the job done. For me I consider the best of all time to be the Sebertool M4 because theres just nothing else like it, no other mini offerings besides really any of the Serbertool models that are actually sturdy and robust. That's just a preference / opinion though, and my most used / carried was my old fuse.

Hmm, great question...my instinct says Leatherman Free P4 as a stand alone, but I think the Dual Force is a good build around me tool If you can manage the grip..for a smaller one you can carry all the time the Leatherman squirt is surprisingly useful

MacGuyver’s Swiss Army knife was my introduction. Mod question: For a while now I have wanted a Skeletool with large scissors place of the knife… do you know if the Surge scissor be a drop in fit?

Nope, it won't, but a Victorinox 91mm with a hole drilled out is a possibility

+1, I know a guy that took that exact 91mm Vic and made a larger hole and put it in a Wave, good luck!

Take a look at the Leatherman Leap, marketed to kids as they're first multitool. Has an optional Knife blade. Bin carrying one since my s2 is hiding on me.

I am always having issues with their lazy QC...but they are still up in top 2 easily...compared to sog and Gerber Leatherman is king.

Damn I was actually hoping this vid would talk about a multitool. Totally got me. Had to check that it was April 1st or not. But hopefully you can make another video actually showing what 1 item (we can all purchase) would be your best multitool. If it was discussed already I didn't see it, I only saw a literal toy.

Noooo such thing lol. Context is everything. If you have a situation or context I could give you a top 5..but it will be completely different for each person and situation.

@@maxlvledc Ah!! I'm the same with audio gear and someone asks for 1 headphone, 1 mic, 1 interface. :D. There's no 1 to rule them all. . Ok, let me ask a question. If based purely on aesthetics and function and non-gimmicky and small real estate (EDC), what would you choose or an effective pocket screwdriver? (For context my knife is the Rambler, pliers is Knipex, flashlight is OLIGHT, wallet is Bellroy Slimsleeve, USB drive is Samsung Bar, precision is also HOTO, headphones are Blessing 2. But looking for the 1/4 inch screws. I'm now debating between the Everyday Screwdriver 2, Bit Inline , James Cache River, discontinued Swiss Army Tool Bit Kit Wrench. For me, the Bitline seems incredibly similar to the PokitPak - which also can screw in and I actually found the Bitline too large compared to the other 2. But yip, for looks and/or small size, what would you choose? (For additional context I have no interest in bulky knives like Leathermans since imo the pliers aren't as good as the Knipex -- and I don't care about a big knife and hate the bulk --which removes most of the reason to get those knives)

@@Dracomies hmmmm, for a pocket screwdriver? I actually love the bitbar..but check out the levergear bit vault at have the cost..it's got similar versatility And switch from rambler to manager..the pen come in clutch imo😉

@@maxlvledc Ooh thank you! I'll check these out! Oh my pen is the Tombow MONO drawing pen size 01 and that's always on me :P I used to use Pilot G4 and Sarasa pens and Muji. But I'm very particular of my pens haha. Thank you for the suggestion!

My first multitool was the original Leatherman PST that i purchased when i was 15 with the *worst* fake ID ever, honestly i never got a lot of use out of it but it was one of my favourite possessions. Unfortunately it was stolen shortly after i turned 18 along with everything else i took with me after i moved out of my mom's house due to lodging with some untrustworthy types. I still marvel at the fact that the terrible fake ID worked though!
