In this pro-tips we go through how to make super easy yet amazing looking climbing ivy for your terrain pieces. It's a very easy yet effective process that will guarantee added WOW value to your model terrain.

You can use sawdust colored with acrylic paint for flocking, too.

"Laub" is the foliage of trees or bushes, it´s a word to sum up all the leaves of a single tree/ bush or even an entire wood. It is also used for the dry leaves on the floor that have fallen off during autumn :). Kind regards from Germany!

I’m doing something for the first time, so I had none of that “leaf” stuff to hand. I used dried oregano that I had in the cupboard instead and it looks pretty good!

Bay leaves remain green when they dry out, they have insect-removing properties, and if the multi-cutter passes have small leaves easily without chemicals. Like genders, they used greens cut into parts of A4 or whatever you want, they help the materials to be put back in their vase.

if you want to up your game a tad with the vines, I suggest pulling up some grass and small weeds and washing the roots. Then let them dry. invert them and then follow your instructions above. The level of realism is off the charts.

Really like the way the vines get smaller as the plant grows. A way I'd try to get the vines to fan it is this. Get one of those cheap cork message boards lay it flat on your work surface. Use parchment paper over it (to protect the cork makes clean up a snap). Now fan out your ivy the way you want pin then using sewing pins cover with your white glue/water mix dry and paint them. Now your vines will hold their shape to flock however you would like. Using spray adhesive or more white glue method but they won't clump together on you. They will still have give to them to whatever you want to add them to. Walls trees or whatever else you can dream up.

By the way, I tried both Elmer's and 3M spray adhesive and I found that the 3M is much better in all form. It's bigger, has a better spray pattern and sticks a bit better in my opinion. Only downside is that it is a bit more expensive, but I think it is still worth it.

Great vid. The nice thing about this twine is you could colour it to a darker shade of brown too if you wanted darker 'branches'

I would use a shoe box to spray the adhesive then cloths pin the up to dry, might be easier.

Fantastic results, Neil. Love the way you used the twine to create such a realistic vine structure - it looks amazing against the masonry. Always excited to see a new video from you - and am never disappointed - thank you! Will be SO there for the final reveal of The Wizard Tower. Yep. And, oh, MAN, do I understand the whole "protect your work surface from over-spray"...."Oops" thing! Story of my life... Isopropyl Alcohol is my go-to for wiping down my hands and cutting mat after the oops - sanity saver!

Going to take you up on the isopropyl alcohol! Been just using dish soap and water with mediocre results.

There's one thing model R X R 's forget about when doing Logging scenery in the mountains . And that is " Pine Needles " on roofs and open less traveled areas . I use that same rough twine , Separated and cut / chopped at or about 1 / 8'th inch . 1 / 4 to 3 / 8'th for O gauge . Then spread at random over the HO / HO- N3 layouts . If some gets in the pine trees , leave it there's always dead needles in the tree ( where do you think they come from ) special order E -Bay ??? Lol

For a more relistic "Ivy" look, find some female Birch catkins around September and October after they have shed their seeds. The 3 pronged bracts look great and are a lot more realistic than Noch leaves in this scenario.

My tip would be, use PVA drop on some scatter, allow to dry, then spray everything black, then go for the long vines and so on. works for me

Try this next time: lay the sprig out how you want it to look, spray it, CAREFULLY move it to the clean paper, and sprinkle the flock on. Then leave it there til it dries. Don't move it, touch it, breathe on it. Once that first layer dries the entire body will stiffen up enuf to work with it. Might help with clumping.

Thank you so much for this Tutorial mate, I was lucky to have all the pieces needed. My only difference was I had Javis light green scatter as my leaves, but they look perfect. I used this technique for my Joytoy 1/24 scale to 1/18 scale desroyed building diorama, and the vines look amazing and really bring it to life. So again thank you for these amazing tips 🙂👍

I've done this same method but I find that using watered down pva on it works better. You can then lay it on parchment paper and shape out the tendrils and then hang to dry or apply it right away to your diorama. Cheers mate!

@@RealTerrainHobbies it is mate yes, when you water it down, do like 70/30 glue to water, just watered enough to make it more "apply-able"--however not the best for doing layering like you like to do, so I'd recommend my method to start to get your shape and base then when that dries use the spray adhesive to add details on top! 😋

That's a pretty good idea. I prefer to use strong-hold hairspray instead of spray adhesive. It works just as well as the spray adhesive but doesn't clump together as much and is easier to pull apart if it does. Hope this helps too.

You might find it easier to hang your string over an empty box with a line and clip that way you can spray and sprinkle without having to move your string.

I suggest having two stations (maybe using those square trays for baking. One for spraying adhesive and one for the flocking). So it'll be more organize and easier to clean. You can use also those plastic container for flocking so all you need to do is just cover back the lid and just keep it away just like that. Less work 😊

Pro Tip.. Before you start write on the paper "GLUE" and "FLOCK" in big letters... easy to spot and remember ;)

I've been really looking forward to the Wizard Tower! As always, your work is fantastic and your builds inspire me to try some crazier projects :) Question, I've got a game coming up soon where i would like to have a "lake of lava" kind of environment, with stone tiles falling out as a battle progresses. Any tips on creating a bubbly lava texture that doesn't look flat? Thanks man!

I haven't tried any lava yet myself, but this is probably one of the nicest lava I've seen. facebook.com/phoenixterrainsystems/photos/a.106916376486744/373390686505977/?type=3&theater Hopefully this link works and gets you to the lava I'm talking about. If it doesn't, let me know. Basically to quote the guy who made it: "Pour THICKish plaster. Let it roll down some. Hit it with a hairdryer... crust forms. Pound the table. Crust breaks. Over and over. Paint as desired." So he used thick plaster to get the nice thick flowing look out of it and then heated it up quickly to get the cracking effect you see in real lava and did it in multiple layers. Hopefully that link sends you to the right picture because it looks incredibly good.

I'd have the tiles able to be removed as the battle progresses. Have lava done on a mat under the tiles. For a less then flat but not enough to mess up the tile laying on top use hot glue to make interesting lava flows and highlight using your red oranges yellow and whites. Might even make small"islands" of rock to jump between. This also would give the painting of hotter and cooler lava a place to be.

the noch products are not available on amazon, any of the other sites i tried. any suggestions for something similar. i build little houses, just starting, and want to create better looking ivy wound on a fence or the church wall, than the mossy stuff from wally-world. thanks so much for this awesome video.

Instead of fighting with the tendrils to keep their shape and depth when flocking, could you maybe just allow them to dry and stay stiff, then spray them a second time and then start flocking? I just know I would mess this up if I tried doing it all at the same time lol.

Using broadsheets or any other old newspapers is what I do to protect surfaces. It's cheaper and more eco-friendly. :-)

If you take a can cover then put your leaves or dirt or whatever in that, THEN take a stocking put that over the opening & hold with a rubber band THEN sprinkle your stuff on. Pick up paper & excess goes back in your container, saves your stuff. You can take dirt from you back yard & sprinkle that with your cap with the stocking over it. Also get some dried leaves & little tugs & put it in a blender and get scenery covering that way. 👻🖑

That Elmer's spray adhesive is awful stuff. Used it for flocking trees and man, stuff never dries and gets EVERYWHERE. Brutal to use that kinda glue.

Oh really? Maybe a bad can? mine dried fine. In general yes it does get everywhere if you're not careful, but the vines seemed to turn out great with no issues days later

Water down Mode Podge in a mister bottle seams to work better than the toxic harmful, flammable spray you are using. Very nice looking work you go!
