I've been playing around with the Thumb Pro for a bit, and noticed a lot of the same things you did here. (I hadn't tried 1080/60 though, will now! lol) I bought the camera with the set of ND filters as well, so right from the start I was using those. When I stabilized the footage I was getting the strange blurry bits seemingly all mixed in at random... Thinking about that, I guessed it must be the motion blur showing up in the video, as the camera was moving around objects in the frame were moving relative to the camera, so getting blurred as you'd expect. Once the video was stabilized, those objects were now still in the video frame, and the motion blur was obviously still present in the recorded video. So I put all the filters back in the box and set the camera to 2.7K/60 to shorten the shutter speed as much as I could, and that problem was gone. I did see a little bit of jello show up with the faster shutter speed, but to me it's the lesser of two evils... lol I didn't expect better image quality from 1080/60 than from 2.7K/60, but know that, I'll change my camera settings before the next flight. Thanks! I too like the FPV mode for the audio. I usually use a bunch of filters and processing in post to get usable audio from some of my other cameras, this one spits out audio that's ready to go, so all the time saved I can spend in GyroFlow. ;) FYI, I found I get better results by adding (many) more than 5 sync points and extending the sync time for each from 1s to 2s or even 3s. It takes a relatively longer time to process the data, but on a fast PC it won't be that big a deal. For a 5 minutes clip I went from about 3 minutes to about 5 minutes. Speaking of clips... I noticed that there's a second or two of missing gyro data at the start of each clip after the first one. I tried letting the camera run as long as it can for each clip, or setting it for 5 minutes clips, didn't change the missing data. Overall I'm happy with the camera for what it is, considering the size, weight, and cost. Personally I think the 360Go is a better camera, but still hard to justify the cost given it's limitation on recording time. Sorry for the novel! lol

Haha yeah that was a lot of words lol, interesting to hear another pilots perspective on the camera though. Yeah it's very strange the way that the 2/7k footage seems to have less quality than the 1080 60fps footage. You'd expect 1080 to have the lowest quality and each option above to be slightly better, but apparently not. I wonder if there is some interpolation going on? Ahh I always wondered how you managed to get such clean audio in your flight footage lol. I did once try cleaning up some flight footage with some filters, but had terrible results and couldn't get rid of the wind noise at all lol. The PRO does legit do a really good job of filtering the wind noise though, that one feature makes it a really good option for a flight camera for sure. As for gyroflow, I actually usually use 10 sync points - i'm not sure why only 5 showed up on my video - might be because I recently upgraded to v1.2. Maybe it reset my settings? More sync points is always better though. That's interesting to hear about the missing gyro data at the start of the clips though, i hadn't noticed that so will keep an eye out. And yeah no doubt the GO2 is the best camera in terms of image quality and stabilization, but as you said its too expensive and the recording time is just too short. Us fixed wing guys measure our flight times in hours, not seconds like the quad guys 😂
@dano5739
@dano5739 Год назад
I have noticed some issues with the second clip, GyroFlow didn't seem to do anything with it. Maybe because of the missing gyro data you've mentioned.
@tedwingate
@tedwingate Год назад
I've been finding that the stabilization is much better if I clip out the first few seconds of footage, missing data might explain that. The price point on this camera is incredible, and the filter system is great. Hoping they make a lens shade soon.

An awesome very well tested comparison. If you were to do any follow-on testing, it would be interesting to see how the original Thumb WITH an appropriate ND filter for brighter light compared to the Thumb Pro, when the Thumb Pro was restricted to 1k recording. Think the value of investing in a set of ND filters might outweigh the value of the feature differences (audio, low light) that the Thumb Pro offers. I don't think any ND filters used in the testing here (?) ... not that we should expect, but like the colour grading, the difference in results could be very significant. The original Thumb seems to be overexposed (little contrast in bright areas), while the Thumb Pro underexposed (loss of contrast in dark areas). Recovering contrast in dark areas is much easier, as as overexposed bright are just lost. Wonder how the Thumb Pro stabilized 4k 30fps video (28:12) would look if was subsampled it down to 2k, or 1k before applying a stabilization algorithm? The issue is that individual frames have very different amounts of motion blur something that gyroflow is not able correct as the effective resolution changing on the fly with the amount of acceleration. IMO: the 30fps is poor choice, unless recording in bright light.

Great review. Both companies need to subsidize your cost with a camera and future product at least. Regardless of your sub or view counts. Anyone seeing this review knows enough to make a good decision based on their needs. Thanks you for all the work and attention to detail. Thanks for sharing.

best review so far! mainly because it's aimed at flying fixed wing. I have got the thumb pro and really liking it. flying at low light isn't something I'm going to do , so for me it's the best choice. did you try to enable the "low light image enhancement" option? Also changing the lens made a big difference for me, the fov of the original lens is a bit narrow.
@gizfpv
@gizfpv Год назад
Thanks man! Yeah I tried to review these camera's specifically with fixed wing use in mind. The conclusion would have probably been very different if I was reviewing them for quads instead lol. Yeah I had low light enhancement enabled in all the tests. Ooh that's interesting about changing the lens. Yeah the FOV is a bit narrow on the PRO so widening that would be good - and I can see how having a wider lens would get more light to the sensor which would be good for low light flying

@@cagmuer are the lens easy to change? Never changed a lens before. Do they just screw on with no modding required?
@cagmuer
@cagmuer Год назад
@@gosurc1860 Yeah not why there hasn't been a video about it. Only a couple of screws to open the case, there is a small blob of glue holding the threads around the lens, I used a heat gun to warm the glue but others have just turned it to unscrew the lens, and almost any M12 lens fits and you can put the camera in webcam mode so you can get a live feed so you can focus the lens, and then put a dab of hot glue or a locking ring on the threads to lock it in place. Now the new lens might not line up with the case. So it might not work out perfect.
@gizfpv
@gizfpv Год назад
Yeah I've seen a few people have changed the lens and had good results. I probably won't do it myself, but it's good to know there's a practical mod
@turdferguson1756

When you get into the very high FPS, such as 120, there is less time for images to be processed, and you will get the blur seen. It is precisely why 120fps is a lower latency than 60fps with things such as the DJI Goggles when used for FPV, although it seems counter-intuitive at first.
@gizfpv
@gizfpv Год назад
That actually does make sense. Less time to process each image would almost certainly result in a loss of image quality (probably more compression), which would lead to the image not looking so sharp, and also mean there's less data to send per packet, hence the lower latency. Interesting

Idk how to dial in the camera settings with the thumb pro auto mode sucks. Thinking I might try out the manual mode on my phone camera with the ND filter in front of the lens so I can copy the settings.
@gizfpv
@gizfpv Год назад
I did actually try manually adjusting the settings when doing the low light tests, but I couldn't make the footage look any better than it did when using auto mode. For me at least it seemed auto mode was getting about as good as results possible, just a shame that they weren't great

The oversaturated image from the Go isn't great for anyone that would want to edit the footage, as someone who is looking at buying a Go 2 I am annoyed that I think Pro was a better image in most of the comparisons. I wish that the Go 2 had the option for an SD card.
@gizfpv
@gizfpv Год назад
I'm pretty sure on the GO2 there is a option to record with 'flat colour' or something similar, so the footage doesn't come out immediately looking oversaturated and warm. It's a option that's hidden in settings somewhere and isn't default, but does allow more options for editing etc if you wanted. Yeah a SD card on the GO would be great, although only really useful if we could have longer recording times too
@legorj35

25:00 you need to set Dynamic zooming to not see the black bars
@gizfpv
@gizfpv Год назад
Yeah, that is one option, or the other is to change the background mode to 'repeat edge pixels'. Both techniques make the footage look a little more polished, but I deliberately chose to show the black bars just because that is something that's unique to gyroflow footage and isn't a issue with the GO2
@Martoriass

I picked up one of those insta360go cameras when they first came out, but I was somewhat disappointed. After what was not even a crash but just a rough landing it locked up and would not function. I sent it back for repairs paid another $35 of import fees to get it back into Canada and then it still wasn't fixed it was just all locked up and I basically threw it in the garbage. I didn't really care for the quality of the footage anyway.
