Great video. Since I travel vicariously through you I really enjoyed our trip to Alaska, a place I could never afford to visit (I'm 80 and on Social Security). Between you, National Geographic, and The Discovery Channel I really get around since my camping trips are usually limited to nearby campgrounds like St. Bernard State Park and Bayou Segnette State Park. Please keep posting travelogs. Thanks for taking me along. I love you guys.

I drove to Alaska in 1970 when the speed limits were 55 MPH nation wide. 18 hours per day for 6 days from Tennessee. I intended to camp but just turned my car to the East so the sun would wake me, no time to camp. 1300 miles of gravel road at the time from Dawson Creek to the state line.

Yea, "nation wide" could have been deleted. If you look at a map you will see that the rout between Memphis and Anchorage at that time was 90% non interstate and 55 MPH. If you drive 4,000 miles in 6 days you won't forget it.

Excellent video! I agree with you on every point. My son and I drove from Spokane to Fairbanks to pick my hubby up at the airport. Our son was 12 yrs old at the time and my husband traveled for his job. Through Canada, on the Cassiar Hwy, I was driving 11 hour days. We had lots of time to explore once we met the plane, but I sure don't advise trying to cram the trip in a short time. We also splurged on activities that were special to Alaska, and saved our special food budget for meals that were "fresh off the boat". Thankfully, we had only one problem with our Class C. The window over the cab was leaking because the gasket had not been done correctly at the time of manufacture. Not a problem we discovered here in New Mexico, but the first hard rain in Canada revealed the leak. In months, and many thousands of miles, that was the only issue. Some people might want to check into the ferry for part of the trip. Expensive, but depending on your rig, might be worth it. We have traveled on the ferry, and it was the most relaxing, beautiful few days I have ever spent traveling, and we were able to camp in Juneau, Sitka, and Ketchikan.

I went up to AK in '84, solo, in a car with a tent, in which I spent 17 nights, 5 nights in youth hostels, 1 night on the state ferry deck--in my tent, believe it or not, and the rest with people along the way who took me in--31 days in all, 9244 miles, and the only problem I had was I used the 2 spare tires I brought along, plus bottoming out in a rut, and ripping off my muffler. This was back when about 30% was still gravel, most in Canada. I also took some extremely back roads just for the variety--the Taylor Hwy. from Tok to Dawson City, then the Campbell Hwy. on the way back to Watson Lake, in order to get on the Nahanni Range Road to Tungsten, NWT, thereby checking off that terr. on my list. My splurge was going to Nome and Kotzebue on a 2-day Arctic trip, as well as a short trip on the State Ferry to Juneau and Haines. That back roads trip was unique on that some days I saw nobody for at least half the day--quite an experience. Wow, that was wordy, wasn't it?

Today marks exactly two months since I arrived here in Seward, Alaska. My new hometown. I drove up from Seattle. Took my time to enjoy the Winter and the solitude. Starting the day after Thanksgiving, and arriving here on December 19. My little Toyota truck (1994 v6, 3.0 liter 4WD pickup w/canopy), packed to the gills, with two 18 foot sea kayaks on top, pulled my fully loaded 14 foot trailer admirably. Snow and ice, all the way, with temperatures reaching -40 (where Celsius and Fahrenheit meet). Before I left, I installed a small wood stove in the trailer. Keeps it nice and toasty in here. The propane furnace is only needed as backup. Even though I installed a heating pad underneath the grey water tank, it froze and cracked during the drive between Bear Lake and Dawson Creek. That was the end of the sink and shower water system until I get it fixed this Spring (I use a composting toilet, and have never bothered with the flush toilet/black water system). No troubles with the truck, and acquired just three small nicks on the windshield. Boondocked all the way except for one night at Toad River, where I paid for an electrical hookup by the lodge. If you're prepared, there's something very special and beautiful about driving the road in Winter. Ever since I crossed the WA/BC border, I've been on nothing but snow and ice (still am, here in lovely Seward! ::)). Finally, thanks for all the helpful tips, as I learned a great deal from you while planning and preparing for my trailer pulling, RV living adventure!

we were lucky in '15, fuel was down & the exchange rate was excellent (like 1.23 Canadian for a US dollar, IF you go to a bank & get Can dollars, otherwise the merchants just adjust their prices accordingly) It was still 14k miles of driving tho !

We purchased a used Class C last year and did a trial run before heading out to Alaska. What a trip. Just under 14,000 miles, a little over 2 months and right at 9K in expenses. Fortunately, we didn't have any break downs. We only took the RV, no toad. You hit the nail on the head with all the costs, etc. Take your time and smell the roses! It truly is a trip of a life time and was our bucket list to check off! Since the Canadian dollar was not strong, we averaged around 38% off all the credit card charges we made. Don't use cash! A liter of gas was averaging $1.68 a liter, but using the credit card, we saw the reduction in our bill when it was posted on the bank website. A big thank you for all your informative videos. Enjoy the ride!

By definition, gas is a "variable" cost, not fixed. Fixed costs, would be things like insurance, vehicle registration, and so forth. Gas cost varies by the amount used and its price. Same thing for groceries and the like.

I'll assume our 'two' trips to Alaska (first one was up the Dempster highway to Inuvik) where fortunate, as we had no issues on either...well, I won't say NO issues, as on our first trip our little dog we had, while on a ferry ride, decided to tear out some chunks of material/foam from the drivers seat when left in our pickup...but no break downs, no flat tires, no broken headlights etc. on either trip. Second trip consisted of a truck/camper setup, and again, no issues at all...just lots of good times, and the odd car wash cost to clean our unit a couple of times. I know you said 'once in a lifetime' Sean, but I'm looking forward to our third trip at some point, as we now have a diesel pusher motorhome, so a little more comfort than previously, as well as much higher fuel cost as well. We LOVED the boon docking throughout the trip, and we live in southern British Columbia, so we didn't put anywhere near the miles you did, but it was still significant. We where in Seward as well, but didn't go on the boat tour you two did, but we did experience our first earthquake while parked right on the ocean! We thought someone was rocking our unit, as did everyone else in the campsite, but it was truly an 'experience' and one we truly loved, and and as mentioned, look forward to another one day! Love your video's, and truly appreciate the time you take on them!

About gas prices. We went up last summer. Avoid campgrounds that sell gas, they will be about 50% higher. Between Fort Nelson and Watson Lake Yukon is the highest price fuel zone. Check Gas Buddy when you have cell service.

We lived in AK for 10 years and are now full-timers in the lower-48. We lived just north of Anchorage in Eagle River. When it comes to the weather up there; there really is no normal. Our first summer there, we literally had 10 days of sunshine (May through Sept)! A couple of years later we broke the record for the most consecutive days above 70. Typically the last two weeks of May through the middle of June is the best weather but like I said it seems to be different every year. Regardless, well worth the visit!!

My folks used to talk alot about their Alaska adventures. They took at least 3 Airstream trips. First ones were when AlCan was gravel!. One big allure for them was fishing - my Dad had built an electric boat loader for their alum boat over the camper shell. They we're well provisioned. Seems an amazing place to visit. Would be hard to part with 300 semolians for a 1 day boat ride - - but like you said the memories will last longer than the pocket book dent. Thanks

I agree with the aux fuel tank. On our F350 we have 38 gal. OEM tank and a 90 gal. tank/toolbox combo in the bed plumbed into the OEM filler neck (gravity feed) When we travel we pick and choose where to buy fuel and have a nearly 1800 mi. range. I am a firm believer in Cetane Booster and buy it by the case.

Spent the week of August 2007 in Canada and Alaska in a rented 25' RV. We had no mechanical problems but there are stretches of road up there up to 100 miles long where there are no pulloffs and the road drops down two to three feet on either side. If you have trouble, you sit in the road and wait for help.

Yes, a larger gas tank is good, but not without the complication of reducing the load you can carry. This may not be an issue for Seemore, but it is for my F-150. I considered a larger tank, a Nissan Titan tank for my 3.0L diesel, but the diesel itself limits the payload cause the diesel is so heavy. You get the picture.

I've the round trip about times with just about every RV type. Small class C, 13' travel trailer, cab over camper, 20' travel trailer and this summer a fifth wheel. As well as multiple SUVs and compact car. Had to get two new tires in Whitehorse. That was it in all of the trips. Since I live in AK, every trip is an "Alaska trip" just in reverse. Best advise is to take your time. Every trip was a month or more. It is NOT a once in a lifetime trip...

Just case other Americans are reading/watching, Yukon and northern British Columbia are very expensive. In lower British Columbia, sure, a little more expensive than the lower 48, but it's not shockingly more than until at least halfway north through the province. The exception is the area of Greater Vancouver where everything is more expensive just because it's an expensive city to live in (dumps of detached homes sell for over $1M CAD each)

Good points in your video, we did our trip during the summer of 2015. Fuel will be your biggest cost and I'm passing along a tip for those to help them reduce the fuel cost, Kroger foods customer serves card, they own Fred Myers, Food for Less and Ralph's. for every 100 points from buying from them you get 10 cent off per gallon up to 35 gallons of fuel. Use Google Earth to find those gems of hidden places for over night camping, we did and found a lot of spots you wouldn't see from the roadway.

Posting this that I posted on your "When to go" video (more appropriate here). We've taken 17 vacations (from Georgia) in AK and we lived there for three years. THE best time to be there is centered around July 4th. If you're there on July 4th you can't do much better than being in Seward for the Mt. Marathon race. Also, you could have done your Kenai Fjords tour, AK Railroad, and several other activities for HALF the money. Stop at Carr's grocery store or Fred Meyer's and pick up a Great Alaska Tour Saver book; it's about $99 but the worst deal is a 2 for 1. You only need one book per couple so you would have been money ahead on just the Kenai Fjords tour. Eating... Yes, eating out in AK can give you sticker shock; but if you go to franchise places the prices are the same as in the lower 48. Still, splurging at a homegrown place like Sourdough Sal's in Soldotna is very worthwhile. Glad you got to experience the great land!!

I drove through Canada in 1990, 1993, twice in 2016 and again in 2017. Paid nearly $9 American for 4 liters of gasoline in 1990 in parts of Canada. Thanks to the Exon Valdez spill.

I lived in Alaska for 50 years! Now I live in Florida. You got ripped off if you paid $20 for fish and chips ... unless the fish was Haibut (comparable to Grouper prices in FL)! Food prices overall are a bit more as is the cost of living in AK, but wages on average are higher as well. Otherwise, your information is accurate enough! Anyone going to AK MUST do a charter fishing trip ... NOTHING else compares! 😉👍🏻

Yep, it was halibut! Good comparison to grouper in Florida. 🐟

you make me feel like I got off easy. me and my family also put on about 14,000 miles on our trip. we had a fuel pump on the motorhome go out and blew a tire on the car hauler we towed behind. years before that , I did one way back from Alaska when I had been stationed there in the military. on that trip I left Alaska on Christmas Day and drove a good portion out of it at 40 below zero. and wound up buying a couple of tires in Whitehorse Canada. yes, it seems that it's pretty difficult to make that trip without some maintenance / repair issues.

Enjoyed the video, along with all your videos, very much. In any journey on the road, whether hitch-hiking across Europe (done that), traveling in the US or overseas (60 different countries for work and pleasure), or just daily life, walking out your front door and leaving your security blanket in the garage, opens you to experiences that don't always go according to plan. Planning to have the right attitude that you cannot always control the shots, just run with them and don't let them over-run you. Budget for them and have an extra beer and meal at the Red Dog Saloon in Juneau (been there done that) if they don't happen. Even if they do, have the meal anyway. We plan to go as far north as Fort Dawson via the Yukon where my grandfather served as a Mountie and a gold prospector, and where my dad got rickets as a child because of lack of sunshine in Whitehorse and Carmacks. Look to you guys for the best sense of humor blanketed in common sense. Thanks again for your videos and great advice. Ron and Sandie Bee

Haha... almond milk? In the Yukon? LOL!!! When we lived in Dawson City a bottle of pop was $8. Costs are going to be double because the transport costs to get food up there are high. In Alaska, some of the costs are lessened because it may be cheaper to get groceries by ship.

When we drove to Alaska in 1982, we met 4 people who rode their 10 speed bicycles from Montana to Alaska, including the Alaska HWY. They had flat tires almost daily and one of the girls was in tears.

Thanks You Guys! The Alaska trip will be right after the trip to Newfoundland. We look forward to implementing some of your excellent ideas when we take delivery of a new ford transit in the late summer which we will then make livable. [by that I mean we are just putting camping gear we own already in it.] It will be quite spartan but that's ok with us eh?

Most of your advice also applies to just owning an RV in general. There are "hidden" costs that you need to consider. Fuel, insurance, storage, maintenance, etc. That last RV park in the video looked a lot like Mountain View in Palmer. We were there last year on a GAH rental trip. And I should have done a video on rating RV park bathrooms. It was important. (The winner was Ocean View in Homer).

My tip - if you are driving a diesel, DO NOT BUY DIESEL FUEL IN CANADA!! Put a tank in the back of you truck and get fuel in the states. I've fixed many many trucks that have gotten bad fuel in Canada. Plus you'll save money.

Food - really need to check with Canada’s border agency because they are getting really picky on what you can take across the border. Would not let us take frozen chicken across and dog food that had chicken in it. Also anything with seeds is also problematic. KNOW BEFORE YOU GO!

Ironically when I did my Alaska vacation the total miles is about 14,000 also. On the food and eating situation I would make a couple of points. First you commented that you have to eat, and I would say not so. While I would not recommend an Alaska vacation while fasting it is entirely an option. Not long ago I did a 45-day fast. While shorter than ideal this would be plenty of time for an Alaska vacation. The other point on food is if you're not fasting you are eating anyway, so if you are stocking up ahead of time and preparing most of not all of your meals there could be no additional cost associated with the trip. Again not much fun to do while you're on vacation , but if that's a factor in deciding whether to go or not it doesn't need to be. On the emergency repairs it seems like everybody gets some. We did reasonably well and 2 months and 14,000 miles, we had a fuel pump go bad and a tire blowout. Towed vehicle damage and axles are a quite common problem.

I wanna go from Oklahoma to Wasilla in a Class A ( I am a fulltimer) my Daughter lives there and I flew up last year to start the logistics- I am about to accelerate the move and am starting to make plans. I will look at currently a week to 2weeks for easy journey and constant maint checks and such. kinda in a military style order of operations. I more then likely will be alone (one small dog and cat) full Oh poop of belts, hoses, tire changing equipt , ether (sets a bead real nice on big tires) etc. only supplies will be a survival style list and such. I am thankful for people like you both who try to get information resources out there for people to use..I will NOT be in a hurry. My wife is in nursing home so getting her there and to a place will be the hardest-I don't think in her condition the trip would be good at all on her. ok too long a post ty and keep the great advise and info coming-hope to meet you one day! happy New Year!

I live in Canada and you are right everything is more expensive and often double what you would pay in the US. I have the Transfer Flow reserve tank which holds about 100 gallons of diesel. This tank was costly to buy and install but it probably has paid for itself by now in fuel savings. Also, I don't have to stop for fuel very often -- usually fill when I find the cheapest place. By the way what brand of tire was it that blew out on the trailer? Have a suitcase full of loonies and toonies to pay for diesel repairs.
@LongLongHoneymoon
@LongLongHoneymoon 7 лет назад
Loonies and toonies! Thanks Sheila for your post. The blowout tire was a Goodyear Marathon -- we have since switched to Michelin LTX. Yes, I think your transfer tank was a wise investment!
@livingauthenticallyonmyownterm
Thanks for responding -- to bad about the Goodyear Marathon apparently they are known for blowouts and I have them on one of my trailers now. They came with the trailer when I bought it and I plan to change them out this spring. Michelin LTX have a very good track record. The Transfer flow Tank has turned out to be a good investment but also provides a good feeling to be on the road and not have to think about how much fuel I have or question if I can fit into a gas station and get out safely.

Depends where you go.. The more secluded the area you go to in Alaska the spendier it can be. I remember paying 9 dollars for a gallon of milk when fishing out of Yakutat 25 years ago. Couldn't even imagine what it costs nowadays there.

Do it; you'll never regret it. don't take a five day cruise; you will learn nothing. Don't fly to anchorage and thereafter believe you have been to alaska. Going to Anchorage is quite a bit like going to Overland Park, Kansas. Don'r believe malarky about horrible roads, gas for $9 per gallon, take two spare tires and a timing belt and two five-gallon cans of gas and a spare battery. All this is just utter nonsense or outright lies. Do expect to be overcharged for poor restaurant foods. Your best source good cooked food is Safeway, (Called Carrs in Alaska), they always have a choice of inexpensive good soup, plus sandwiches and salads. Take along a small refrigerator that plugs into your cigar lighter. Thus you can carry cold stuff such as butter, cheese, lunch meet, beer and Pepsi. You will have to drive to see Alaska and the best way to get there is by driving up through British Columbia, through the Yukon and then turning west to Fairbanks and working your way south. We went by Ford van, with a mattress in the back and the back seats removed. Do expect to find unbelievable rates for a room in a motel, so plan to sleep in the van on your way. I'm talking about some motels charging $300 a night for a room. After getting a rate, if you qualify, ask if they have a discount for seniors or veterans. If you need a place to sleep in your van, you are always welcome to stay in the parking lot at Walmart. You don't have to ask, just pull into a remote end where are the RVs are parked. Make a portable toilet from a 5-gallon bucked with a hose slit and wrapped around the top and lots of plastic from the market to keep the inside of the bucket clean and dry. Wherever you go pick up spare napkins and window cleaners to use for every kind of cleanup and nose-blowing. Make sure that you keep evey receipt in date order to verify it with your credit card. While traveling in Canada, use your credit card for everything, even a Pepsi, since the CC company will convert Canadian dollars to USD and you will get the current rate of exchane. When driving across Canada remember that 66 MPH is 100 KM per hour; and 50 KM is 33 MPH. Take time to get off the main roads to see local attractions and meet local people, your trip will turn into an acventure and you will meet fascinating people, and every one with something to tell you or to teach you. Plan to stay in hostels, they are inexpensive, you can cook your own food and sleep in your own room. You will also meet fascinating people from all over the world. Next best is B&Bs, a good meal in a nice home. Ross Murphy, Shawnee, Kansas
