He did a great job. We really need to examine the negative stereotypes that are attached to the name "K-pop" and why people seem to think that it's less valid than western pop music. Yoongi said it best, K-pop is an amalgam of music, visuals, dance, fashion that is used to tell a story and express a concept. In that vein BTS IS K-pop, but I think they're expanding on what it can encompass, showing how real and meaningful and powerful it can be when you take something that's been stereotyped as maunufactured polished pop and pour intention and sincerity and authenticity into it. The fact that from the beginning Bang pd wanted it to be their stories, their perspective, their reality, is KEY. Because that authenticity is what resonates and is what is missing from a lot of other K-pop. Which isn't to say that all that is BAD, and honestly western pop has the same issues for a lot of artists so knocking K-pop industry for doing pretty much the same thing is asinine, just not something that resonates with ME. I LIKE depth to my music. I like art that challenges me and makes me think in any medium. Before I listened to BTS I had a preconceived notion that K-pop was all just bubblegum and lights and pink and shallow. They showed that you can use the medium of K-pop to be REAL and I love it.

The video didnt mention it but another major reason ARMY frequently dont consider BTS kpop is because BTS and ARMY have been pushed out of the category by other kpop stans, especially those who think BTS is too westernized. BTS has really been forced out of kpop by those people yet are also not fully welcome in the western industry, either.

In it he mentioned making a video essay on how the West's perception on K-Pop is wrong. He made it into a three part series and it's SO good, I really recommend it. The titles are (in order); 1. you're wrong about k-pop: a video essay 2. the media is wrong about k-pop 3. k-pop vs. orientalism: no more than a machine. songs written by vocal line (and i mean lyricly written) are mostly their solo bts song or solo projects aside bts. like Tae's Sweet Night, Winter Bear, etc, Jungkook's Begin, Still With You, etc, Jimin's Lie, Promise, etc, Jin's Abyss. they might use help to form their thought and intention in the way that would be pleasant to hear in a song, but it's still their raw feeling that they wanted to share. it just took them time to learn to understand music and it's creating to get their hands and mind on something that would be their own
@msmichellewinchester

Seriously, I love Jungkook's songwriting. He's behind Magic Shop (which he also produced) and Your Eyes Tell - some of the most beautiful BTS songs. And his solo song Still With You is my ringtone. I love that one so much too. He also cowrote the melody for Film Out. It's really not like the rappers sometimes graciously allow the vocal line to contribute with some ok songs or something. The vocal line might write less, but they're not joking about songwriting at all.

i totally agree on your making money from art vs. making art for money rant, and its so easy to tell which is which when you're a critical consumer. I was already a fan previously but REALLY fell in love with bts after their love yourself series because you could just feel the authenticity in the project. Then a few months later every idol group and their mother had a song out about loving yourself and it was so unsubtle and shallow feeling which made me kind of upset because they were using mental health as a cash grab after seeing it resonate with people

All of the vocalists have all written several songs, both for solo music and in BTS albums. JK has 16 official credits for writing, V has 15, Jin has 11, and Jimin has 9 (None of this is for composing or producing, just lyrics). Since HYYH era, most of them have been involved in writing songs for the whole groups. They aren't as involved as the rapline (RM: 173 credits, Suga: 124 credits, j-hope: 112 credits), but with each album they are becoming more and more involved in writing.

the term kpop was coined by a korean for an american publication around 20 years ago. it was primarily used by western kpop fans until just a few years ago. before the term became marketable and something to capitalize on, korea used their own word for pop music, which is 'gayo', and it referred to music that was popular and charted well regardless of what corner of the music industry it came from also I recommend reading bts' recent rolling stone interviews, rm addressed the kpop term again
@Jaguar470
@Jaguar470 3 года назад
Is that why there is a Gator music chart in Korea, for popular music there?
@Omniscientquonky
@Omniscientquonky 3 года назад
@@Jaguar470gator? I'm not sure what you're referring to? after adjustments they made recently their charts reflect pretty accurately what the gp listens to. there's very little idol music sticking to their charts and rarely near the top (primarily bts, and one or two others). indie pop, ballads, some hiphop, and korean trot are what's popular there. occasionally a western artist breaks in.

Elliott sang is really great. 25:15 hmmm, well i would say they’re similar but also quite different. gangnam in korea is known to be a very rich area, most people living there millionaires, with luxury apartments, as well as huge corporation headquartered in gangnam too. psy’s gangnam style is satirically criticising those who flex their wealth, as though they are from gangnam, but in reality, have little to no sophistication as highlighted in the music video (;the nerdy dancing, him gawking at a woman’s butt, etc.). on the other hand, spinebreaker is a direct criticism of children who piggyback or in fact exploit their parents’ labour for their own selfish materialistic desires.

There are quite a few because they do contribute a lot in ways we sometimes don't realise, for example the Dis-ease bridge was written by Jimin. Suga describes it as a music camp. They all write and then they come together and choose what works best. For example v has shown us his version of spring day on Vlive. These are some of the songs that are credited to the vocal-line almost exclusively (also I am sure I am missing a few): Jin- Abyss (prepare for this one, you should read the accompanying note as well as it kind of highlights his mind space as he was writing this), Tonight, Moon (we actually saw him writing some of this in Bon voyage 4) Jimin-Promise (Break the Silence has footage of Jimin and RM discussing lyrics), Friends, Christmas love V- Blue and Grey (which you have already reacted to!) Scenery, Sweet Night, Winter Bear Jk - Still with you (You can see JK discussing lyrics with RM for this as well in IN the SOOP), Magic Shop, Stay, Film Out, Your Eyes Tell Most of these are put up on their Soundcloud account and most come with a note. Honestly everything on their SoundCloud is a treasure

36:18 Absolutely !!! Magic Shop is probably Jungkook's must known song, although he's also written and composed others recently (Still With You and Your Eyes Tell are BEAUTIFUL) Taehyung has composed and written a lot of his own songs, which are very soulful and even veer off into classical music territory - Winter Bear, Scenery, Sweet Night, Snow Flower Jimin wrote and composed "Promise" (a very sweet song about his mental health growth) and has lots of various other types of song-creation credits (e.g. he made the bridge in "Dis-ease") Jin made "Tonight" and "Abyss", both very beautiful songs that I strongly recommend because they have lyrics on deep, complex topics (the death of his pets and imposter syndrome, respectively) Taekook have been steadily working away at their own mixtapes, probably for years at this point There's also collabs - "4 o'clock" by RM and V, "It's definitely you"/"Even if I die, it's you" by V and Jin...

42:19 Kpop doesnt only have a stigma in the West, they have a stigma in most of the Asian countries too. Take for example my country, most but not all of the people here immediately think they're gay and untalented because they're so used to artists that belt their songs and men according to them arent supposed to be cute and wear makeup. 🙃 Several times I've had schoolmates and relatives who got curious to the music I was listening to on my earphones, when I tell them who or what it was they immediately frown like it was a bad thing to listen to Kpop 🙄 spurring words like "But you dont understand it" and "They're gay or they look gay" as if looking gay was bad. 😞

Omg I will die for a Comedian+ Bby Gang collab. Both of you are my favorite BTS commentary channels! Also stuffs... 1) the mv on crack is BTS’s “Idol” 2) The vocal line production credits, I’m not super knowledgeable on specific credits but I know JK had a part in writing “Magic Shop” and “Stay”, V originally intended “Blue and Grey” to be on his personal mixtape but the group ended up adding it to the BE album (the biggest change being rewriting the lyrics from English to Korean), Jimin also mentioned that he helped with the bridge of “Dis-ease”. They have many more credits, but these are the ones I know off the top of my head... All of the vocal line have songs they wrote personally released on sound cloud, some examples: JK “Still with you”, V “Winter Bear”, Jimin “Promise”, Jin “Tonight”... A funny side note, typically when they compose an album, all of them prepare lyrics and music and as the songs develop they pick from what everyone has come up with but it’s commonly joked that RM is just so good at what he does that his work is chosen most often during the writing process.

About the other member's contribution to songs: I don't like to label songs as "x-members song" in terms of production and lyrics because especially solo stans see that and run with it but especially their solo songs (both soundcloud releases and in albums like eg. Wings) generally have a lot of input from the respective member (including the vocal line). There are also group songs which vocal line helped to create (eg. Magic Shop, Film Out) but I think it is most noticably in solo work. As a side note I just really recommend the Wings album solo songs, they are all really beautiful and introspective! Thanks for the video, I really enjoyed it and I hope you'll check out more from bby gang. I think you'd like the "the media is wrong about kpop" series a lot!

8:21 I like Elliot too, he’s such a calm, factual, straightforward, honest person, especially when he approaches his journalism and video essays, it’s absolutely WONDERFUL to see!! 😄 I’m so happy I discovered his channel! 12:06 Yeah, the person speaking, Elliot is a musician and has studied and been interested in both music and journalism intensely. 12:30 Yes!! I’m so glad you see it! This video is EXTREMELY well researched and made, but yet SO underrated and barely mentioned or talked about, largely because people don’t know about it. Which is why I recommended it to 40 different people I’m subscribed to, and yet you are the only one out of the 40 to actually see my comment, actually type out a response, and then watch it, which is why I’m screaming 😂 I’m so happy you love the video and how well it’s researched, it truly is brilliantly done and I learned SO much from it and his other videos! 14:08 Now, regarding your question I don’t know who started calling kpop, “kpop”, in the first place. I know it was first called that in the west, and the term “kpop” was only started to become a commonly heard term around either 2009 or 2012, before that time the term “idol music” was used in SK way back around the mid 1990s, around the time when the first idol music company, SM Entertainment, was created, and in that sense the first time idol music became industrious. Idol music itself, before become industrious due to SM Entertainment, was birthed by the group Seo Taiji and Boys, a group which Elliot talks about later in this video as well as in his three part Kpop video essay series. In SK they still call it to this day “idol music” but everywhere else in the West, especially here in the US, we call it “Kpop”. Honestly, your question is kind of answered and given background and context in Elliot’s three part Kpop video series. 14:55 Don’t worry if you have to rewatch Elliot’s videos a few times to fully grasp everything, he packs a lot into them, but truthfully I think that’s what makes his videos even better! The rewatch value is what makes his videos so great and so educational, because you learn and remember something new every rewatch and thus become a smarter and wiser consumer of Kpop and BTS! You are a smarter person for rewatching the video, not for trying to rely on only memory for knowledge 16:40 Again, don’t worry about retaining all the info in Elliot’s videos, it’s right there for you to rewatch at any time 🙂 That’s the beauty of the format of RU-vid and video, as well as the beauty of Elliot’s research skills because you know his videos and the info about Korean music in them are something you can rely on and trust. 17:02 There we go!! Seo Taiji and Boys! Boom! First and most influential people in current SK music history and the pioneers of idol music! 20:12 That’s why I like Elliot’s videos so much, he breaks down this complex paper into simple terms and those simple terms are what he is speaking, making the subject more understandable. 21:45 No, no! No apologies needed! It shows that Elliot’s video makes you really think about things and question thing, and therefore learn more, so don’t worry, you are doing exactly what Elliot wanted everyone watching his video’s to do: think and question, and therefore learn and grow. 36:11 Now, I don’t know too well to answer your question, so you might want to trust other comments more than my own, but I’m pretty sure most of the solos by the vocal line are written by them, ones I can think off the top of my head are Abyss and Awake by Jin, Lie by Jimin, Your Eyes Tell and Euphoria by Jungkook, and Winter Bear and Sweet Night by V 37:50 I’m so enjoying it and loving it man! You’re reaction is great, and I’m so happy you love the video so far! 44:05 YES!! Everything you are talking about the Korean idol system and how it’s not as different from the Western music industry as most people think is SPOT ON, that’s what Elliot goes into and explains as well in his three part Kpop video essay (sorry to hype those essays so much throughout this comment, it’s just everything you are hitting on in your commentary is what Elliot talks about and goes in depth with in his three part video essay on Kpop 😂) and yes, like you said, someone could write a whole essay on this industry and how different/not different it is from the West is EXACTLY what Elliot did! That’s the three part video essay thing he did! That’s what he talks about! 😂 I’m just finding it so hilarious that you’re hitting on all these points in Elliot’s three part essay and then you say “someone could write an essay on this” and I’m like, COMEDIAN, IT’S RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU I CAN'T WAIT FOR YOU TO WATCH IT AAAGH!! 😂😂 Okay, I'm calm now. 😁 48:07 That’s their song Idol! They were facing a lot of criticism for becoming too “Western” with their breakout into the US at the time and slammed back with the Idol song and mv 54:00 WOW, you subscribed!! Yaaaay!! I loved that you loved him! I agree about the RU-vid platform sentiment 54:35 I’ve been a fangirl, my dude, welcome to the club 😎 I’ve followed all his lives and videos and such, and I think he would love to hang out and talk with you one day! You guys have the same mindset and thought process so I could see you guys becoming friends or RU-vid buddies! 🤗 Okay, so the three part essay I keep mentioning throughout this comment is on his channel and the titles for each are: “You’re Wrong About Kpop”/“The Media Is Wrong About Kpop”/“Kpop vs Orientalism” It’s a lot harder to get through because of how much info is on it about Korean music and history in general but SO WORTH IT once you wrap your mind around it! It’ll take a few watches to fully process, but OH MY GOD is it so good! So I recommend! Thank you so much for reading this insanely long comment about your entire video and your consideration for me and what I have to say. I really hope I haven’t come across as too pushy it’s just, as you just saw, Elliot’s videos are too good to go unnoticed and too many reactors either don’t react to my comments about it, or do and then don’t watch or upload any video about what I suggested, so to get this feedback and commitment from you just really startled and excited me, which is also why I was yelling so much in the comment section of this video 😂 I’m so happy you loved it and I can’t wait for more content from you regarding BTS, bby gang’s vids, or just you! 🤗 Have a great week!

All 4 vocal line members write melodies, hook, bridge and stuff for their songs... some time those get chosen, some times they don't. But in more strict sense of producing and stuff, list of songs produced/written/composed by vocal line 1. Blue and Grey ( By V. It was supposed to be in his solo mixtape). He also co-produced, co-composed BTS's song like Hold me tight, Boys with Fun. He has writing credits for Run, Stigma, Inner Child. 2. Film Out, Magic Shop, Stay, Your Eyes Tell (by JK. Later 2 were supposed to be in his mixtape). He has credits for Run, Dead Leaves, My Time. 3.Jungkook and Jin co-produced a song from their HYYH album Love is Not over ( it was back in 2015). Jin has credits for Awake, Moon, Stay also. 4. Jimin is producer and lyricist (?) for a song called Friends. He has credits for Lie, Dis-ease. So as you can see, vocal line members are sometimes producer, composer of their songs, but other than that they have a lot of credits here and there. 5. All of their SoundCloud free release, those are mostly written/produced/composed by members individually, or they contribute a big big part. Songs are - 4 o'clock, Scenery, Winter Bear, Snow Flower ( by V). Christmas Love, Promise ( By Jimin). Abyss, Tonight (by Jin). Still with you ( by JK). 6. V has an OST Sweet Night for a k-drama. ( it was also supposed to be in his mixtape). He did a lot of producing, composing and writing lyrics for this song. So, yeah BTS vocal line has a big part in those areas as well.

Kpop is an industry, but kpop songs/MVs also has characteristics (according to me). Like when I hear a Eurovisions song (only europeans get it) I can tell; "Ah! Yes of course this is a eurovision song". Kpop songs are all things in one package which makes them very theatrical. That often leads to these songs not being "radio friendly" which I'm a ok with since "radio friendly" is bs anyways.

I agree with him, I think they are Kpop but also something else. The problem comes when people don't understand that they can't be limited or defined by that label only. I wish you would stop underestimating yourself, what you're saying is not "ridiculous", it's actually very interesting and adds a lot to the debate. Even if you were "joking" it can't be good to put yourself down all the time 🤷‍♀️ Try being kinder to yourself, Purple you 💜

36:03 yes there are in fact songs written by the vocalist, some of them tend to be unofficial releases tho (songs which are released om soundcloud) for example for jin, recently released abyss a song made and self-produced by him as well as 'tonight' a few years ago. As for v, he's actually released a lot of stuff as well for the past few years, in fact he's currently working on his mixtape, but as for now he's released 4 o'clock (with RM), Scenery, Winter Bear, and Snow Flower. jimin as well, who released Promise and Christmas love on SoundCloud. JK has a lot of credits especially in producing. Like taehyung, jungkook has also veen working on his mixtape and in fact released a teaser for one called "Decalcomania" back in 2019 which sadly we still haven't heard the complete version as of now😭😭 and also released his own song called "Still With You" as part of their anniversary festa celebration. As for the official tracks, they were often credited as co-writers them and co-producers, a few examples of these are boyz with fun wherein jimin, jin, and taehyung were co-writers along with the rapline, love is not over which in jin and jungkook are co-writers and jk also being a co-producer. In their solo songs too they often take a huge part in making it like jin in awake and moon, jimin's solo lie and joint song with taehyung "Friends". In fact you can see from their more recent works a lot more of the members'(vocal line) name's in the song credits. Especially in the albums Map of the Soul: 7 and BE alot of members particularly in BE since its a self-directed album by the members themselves. In fact, all 7 members have song credits in KOMCA (Korea Music Copyright Association) RM - 171 songs Jin - 11 songs SUGA - 124 songs j-hope - 112 songs Jimin - 9 songs V - 15 songs Jungkook - 15 songs In fact you can simply search it up in google or search the members' song credits throughout the years (preferably in bts' wiki page bts.fandom.com/wiki/BTS_Wiki you can go to each member's page or just look up credits on the albums or song details) I also have here a link created by another fellow army on how to Check BTS's Official Song Credits: docs.google.com/document/u/0/d/1clTYpKkXzXeQOj4FtaS6JE37HUB2QqgnVnYBqt2PE7I/mobilebasic Edit: you know what imma just drop a tweet thread by an army for more and complete details😅 twitter.com/turnofphase/status/1372331763142381571?s=19

i completely agree on the fact that the bad image western ppl have of kpop is mainly rooted in racism, xenophobia, sexism and even homophobia, I would say idk about America, but I live in Brazil and ppl say so often that kpop is gay and that the men look like girls (1. having a "feminine image" doesn't make a man gay. 2. what's the matter if they are gay. 3. it shows A LOT here how west cannot see an Asian man as being masculine, just by being Asian, a man would lose the "masculinity" image, cuz this image is a social construct and it has never been associated with Asian man, period.) also, the reduction of girls tastes on the internet as well still amazes me, how ppl who think so highly of themselves, as intellectually progressive, but still judge young girls for liking kpop/pop music or many other things. all rooted on sexism, cuz men crying or physically fighting themselves over sports is fine, but girls liking a singer is dumb. it's actually crazy how it is still accepted to hate on kpop this way, because SO MANY politically correct people have this same mentality of judging the music, the artists and the fans just for their own existence. oh boy, I love talking about this subject, there is a video about orientalism and bts from this guy as well which I think is very important and you should watch too. will be waiting to comment an essay there as well lol.

it's almost like we are socially forced to insist that bts isn't kpop not because we don't like kpop but because we know that people don't like kpop due to the preconception they have about it. we know that a kpop label attached to the name of bts would cause a lot of unfair judgement on them and at the same time assign their success to the amplified image of kpop. every time it's like "they are popular because they do all these kpop things and all these kpop things are so bad and artificial that bts' success can't be good and deserved". we fight the conception of bts being kpop because once media claims that they are, media stops seeing them as individual group of artists with their own path and their own art. they say it's an article about bts but then they talk about kpop only, as if bts comes in one package with every other popular kpop group kpop by itself isn't something actually bad or scary, so probably the more right thing to do is to destigmatize kpop by the image of bts. but then there comes the inside-kpop relations and bts' history, all the struggles that this indeed industry-or-whatever made bts come through in the beginning and how they are trying to unapologetically use bts as their shield or a horse to ride on now. that's a more complex discussion that also influence the answer on a question should army detach bts from kpop or not
@elliem.1572
@elliem.1572 3 года назад
Very well said! Unfortunately, there is often a need to justify or prove BTS’ worth. So in order to do that ARMY try to distance the group from any misconceptions about the industry itself since that is considerably more effective than trying to hold somebody’s attention long enough to dive into and have a discussion over the complexities of what k-pop is and why it is so stigmatised. Especially considering it is most likely that the listener is either negatively predisposed or at best disinterested so they will not be willing to pour energy into understanding or discussing that topic. It is unfortunate but it also makes sense why (some) ARMY are so vocally demarcating BTS and k-pop

Songs by the vocal line, "Still with you" is written and produced by Jungkook, it's one of my top BTS tracks, just beautiful, definitely take a listen, the same with the song "Promise" composed by Jimin and lyrics by jimin. There's a very subtle thing going on in the lyrics of promise that can make or break the song, I think doolset as always should have a good translation.. For Jin moon comes to mind, he had the idea for the moon lyrics during one of their travel shows I think, and V wrote lyrics for Stigma I'm actually not clear on what track he most contributed to, but definitely stigma and sweet night partially

I want to clarify another thing that he forgot to mention - K-pop is a very common term used in Asia to clarify to listeners which country the artist comes from - that’s why there’s also Jpop (Japanese), Cpop (Chinese), Vpop (Vietnamese) etc. It’s the exact same as UK/US pop, Latin Pop, etc. where often the “UK/US” is dropped because both speak the same language. The western industry would’t know this and so they would use Kpop as a “genre” when it really isn’t. It’s just popular music that people enjoy. Artists coming from outside US like Avicii, David Guetta, Rita Ora, Dua Lipa.. never get branded ask UK pop or Swedish/French so Korean artists shouldn’t be slapped with that “K” either. It’s just music that people enjoy. Besides, BTS when coming for the US market already changed their sound quite a lot to appeal to the taste of an average general-pop listener. Dynamite and Butter sound quite different from their earlier songs, so truly they don’t wouldnt fit in that Kpop category anymore even if we’re gonna consider Kpop to be a genre. The main global music stage (ie US) is set in its ways how it thinks the “right” music should sound and look like, and so anything that’s slightly different coming from a foreigner would be put into a different category. However I bet you if a US/UK artist did the exact same thing in English it would be hailed as revolutionary. The way Taylor Swift was hailed as genius marketer when she released 4 versions of the same album, when Kpop have been doing that for decades and got slammed in western news as “inorganic tactics” to get boost sales. That’s the hypocrisy that I cannot get over.

As a classically trained instrumentalist, I would say that genre is technically not an actual thing in music. There are forms that a song can take, but anything beyond that is all arbitrary and largely insignificant. If someone says something about genre, they are generally trying to describe something about the music that is not actually musical, such as the time the music was made, the place the music was made, the demographic the music was a herald of, or even the demographic the distributors of the music wished to cater to. In my experience, I use genre to explain to a non-musician what I’m doing without jargon-ing them, and if musicians use genre with each other it is usually used to describe the flavor of concentration and intensity in their practice/rehearsal room. When I tell someone I like BTS, if they ask any questions about them I tend to slide into theory and particulars instead of generalizations anyway. And if they say “oh, that K-pop group?” Or “oh, that boy band?” Or “oh, that group with that day-gee-da guy? Man, that scar on his eye is so hard!” My regular answer is a half shrug and a “Sure. Do you have a favorite artist?” But that is because I find it interesting how many people lacking in opinion themselves enjoy guiding and shaping the opinions of others.

And this video was less than 2 years ago... Before dynamite. Now are many times more bigger actually lol Seo Taiji is a legend and he did a collab with BTS... And it was basically a moment where he passed the torch to them :) to BTS he was and still is a real legend and icon, so i think they were super Happy at the time. Epik High also is a group that bts took as insipiration and then collab together still today. Ps: the video that u want to check is called "IDOL" and you really need to watch the "Explained by a Korean" video by DKDKTV right after, cause their video gives more cultural context and makes u understand the whole song and video deeply :)

there are no boundaries in music for me. I listen to all genres and I listen to songs in very different languages. I didn't use to have a clear idea about genres until I got in stan twt and understood all the bs going around genres and categorization. The only variable in music for me is is it good? do I like it or not? it's as simple as that. I give a try, listen and then judge according to my personal taste

Omg im so glad you watched Elliot's stuff, his videos are *amazing* and the way he articulates everything, even on the non kpop related vids, it's just chief kiss, he has another essay series about kpop on bbygang channel that i really reccomend, even if you dont react to it you should check them out on your own cause they really help to put things in perspective imo
