If you go to Disney World and see their Salt Water Tanks you will find fake coral? So why does Disney do it? They have the man power and resources for the real stuff. We don’t know what the customers end game is. We don’t know the selection of fish they plan on putting. We don’t know if they want to put in the time and energy it takes to reach the goal of full grown healthy salt water tank. So I see no problem with fake coral. I think the true hobbyists who have a passion for salt water tanks enjoy the challenge of growing coral. But that’s not for everybody. There some people that simply wanna enjoy the beauty too and not go down the rabbit hole some of us go in regarding the hobby.
Real corals is the way to go by far. I can see why some people might go for fake corals though. If you travel a lot a fake reef would be much easier and less stressful
The problem with the fake coral is that people just plop them anywhere with no seconds thought. You spend tons of time on your real coral tanks and hardly any on fake but the one thing I have to say is you have to spend some time with the layout of your fakes, the colors you choose and which types of styles you get. It will never ever look as good but you can make it look tons of times better than this sad tank.
Super happy I just found your channel. Cant wait to see your new videos as well as watch your previous ones. I love the fake coral tank. What I do is get 2 sets of fake coral, and with each cleaning I replace the second set while the other is cleaned and set aside to dry until the next cleaning. This makes it super easy to maintain clean including being able to vacuum the sand. Allows me to do a change up in the way the tank looks every cleaning. I don’t have time to be on top of dosing and lighting etc for real corals. This works for me and is what I prefer.
Let me ask you. How often to you change them out? I’m really wanting to use them with high quality kessel leds to get that amazing shimmering effect. But I’m thinking I would constantly have to change the fake coral out under these conditions.
I contemplated doing fake coral in a FOWLR tank with fish that would destroy real coral. I didn't want just plane live rock but the fish were SPS and LPS eaters.
Hey Chris, live corals for your customer. Sell the fakes to Paul Cuffaro to fill out the front of his community pond, it's still empty. Everybody has the snowflakes eels, so when you were scooping him I was admiring Gio's two beauties in the next tank. Thanks for another great video.
Sill fairly new to reefing myself, but always live I say! Makes the time and investment so much more rewarding, especially when you can see/ say you grew that.
That eel is very cool. I went with my 2 engineer gobies to get the look of eels - without the teeth factor - though they will apparently eat anything they can fit in their mouths when they are older. Re: tank and fake coral - i don't mind the shapes i quite like the look and yes i was looking at fake corals on various places for a project. Basically take a large coral skeleton and put frags of stylos or cyphastrea or leptoseris on those as well and keep the shape and have some nice encrusting on them. TBH I initially thought the gsp was fake :/ I get my 24K gold lepto +6 other leptoseris colours next week... project encrustation will then occur!!! Keep up the fun videos.
Hmm interesting. I'm sitting here trying to think of reasons why someone would have fake corals given the maintenance and price and I'm not having any luck. Did the customer say why they want fake coral?
