Thank you for your time, Ken. I have both now. Viltrox: really affordable in comparison and fantastic results. Totally worth it. Great for video. Firmware updates. The lens has improved. Now the changes of the clickless aperture are almost smooth during recording. Fuji 35: Mine is sharper than the Viltrox and yes, I definitely can see that fantastic image that is very well known. You can use it for video, but it’s not a video lens. If you know the lens, you can get good results. I love the size. In Europe: Viltrox 295€, Fuji 520€. You choose.
You seemed to have mellowed out, man. More calm. That’s great I find your show a lot more enjoyable this way. You’ve always known your camera talk, now that’s the main focus,. Very cool. I recently picked up the Fuji xc f2 for 160 bucs brand new so getting the viltrox for low light and just a different look is not bank breaking. I’ll have a lite weight Fuji 35 and a low lite beauty beast for less than the price of the Fuji 1.4. I gotta get the 85 first though. Hopefully viltrox will come out with a version 2 by then. Good review!
Ken, I really appreciate your informative reviews. Is Viltrox color saturation comparable to that of Voigtlander 40/1.2, and would you also rate Viltrox 33mm as a "microcontrast winner" and "as a perfect optical instrument" as you rated Fuji 35/1.4 in your Fuji book? Many thanks for your continuing effort!
sorry to be offtopic but does anybody know of a trick to log back into an instagram account? I was dumb forgot the login password. I would appreciate any tips you can offer me!
@Holden London thanks for your reply. I got to the site on google and I'm in the hacking process now. Seems to take a while so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
The Empire Strikes Back! Fujifilm 33mm f/1.4 is out now. My theory is that the Fujifilm engineers watched this review, knew you were right, and set out to build a better Vlltrox. I'll be interested to see your review. PS: You need a new "perk level icon" for the 3-year members, which I will be in a month.
I would say the value of the XF 35mm 1.4 is in its unique character, which is why it's so beloved. Have to see a lot more samples to really see if this lens can compare.
I bought the xt3 Because of you and that was the best camera decision ever, and now I am definitely getting this lens because of this review. Thanks man
$280. If I was feeling spendy one day then I'd get this. Already own the 35mm f2 so it's a no go for me. For people looking to get an inexpensive kit for street and portrait photography, a used X-H1 with the Viltrox 85mm and the 33mm seems like a real winner. Even the 23mm when it comes out depending on the price and performance.
@@binchopet22 I went with the 35mm f2. If the Viltrox was available at the time I made my purchase I'd still go with the Fuji. It has great image quality, the AF is fast and accurate, it is super small and light, and it's weather resistant. Say what you will about WR but even a little bit helps and I do want to shoot in wet weather. A lot of people will complain about being f2, but shallow DOF isn't everything and people shouldn't be afraid of low light, boost the ISO. Or make the lack of light work for you. Play with silhouettes, shadows, specks of light, or highlights. Use a flash. Hope that helps somewhat.
On Flicker the Viltrox micro contrast is outstanding. I think it destroys the Fuji 35mm f1.4 and perhaps beats the Fuji 33mm f1.4. Especially at its price, but the green chromatic bokah is rather irritating. Maybe it can be fixed in post? Idk.
What a nice video. I wonder wich one you would choose between this one and the 7Artisans 35mm f/0,95. The 7Artisans costs the same. It receives more light... but, no af. What about IQ ? Thank you very much.
İf you drop the camera, metal lens hood transfers shock directly to lens which causes breakdown the lens. Whereas plastic lens hood absorbs shock and prevent lens from breaking down. Like the plastic car bumper
I ordered this lens from Viltrox website the morning as soon as it came available. I also paid for the $30 faster shipping. Still don't have it. I got two tracking updates from DHL that still can't give me a status update. You were able to order, receive, test, and review before I can even hold it in my hands. Ughhhh! Great review. Thx for your insight.
No. It is supposed to come this upcoming Thursday. Apparently when it got shipped with a slew of others, they were returned and held at their facility until after their Labor Day holiday. So we will see.
Can you please compare the image quality against the Mitakon 35mm 0.95? Which one would you recommend given that you have no problems with manual focus? Thanks in advance!
Thanks Ken!, I would love to know how do you rate this Viltrox 33mm against Mitakon 35mm in terms of sharpness and Bokeh?. 1.4 versus 0.95? I primary do video work on a XT3 more than photos so AF it doesn't botter me...
Hi Ken, Viltrox makes a 20mm 1.8 for the nikon z cameras. Have you tried it at all? I know you don’t particularly like the z cameras, but I’d be interested in hearing your opinion.
Ken some people reported freezing (lock up) issues on their fujis when using the 85mm viltrox. Possibly due to it being reverse engineered. Have you had this issue at any time either with the 85 or the 33?
I heard they got an update and the issue nolonger exists. Heard it from other youtube videos. Claiming in 48 hrs of finding out, Viltrox released a firmware update to fix the issue.

Hey Ken, any opinions on Voigtlander colorskopar 18mm f2.8
@@KenTheoriaApophasis Do you think the Tokina versions of these Viltrox lenses released later in the year will include different coating to combat these flare issues?
I don't know if someone will interesting for this information, but few day ago I asked to my friend to call to one compnay in Chian who make stepping motors, also for lenses, and sale in different countries includign Japan, and they told us tomake stepping motor is most easy in the world, and cheap too, most theyr motors cost between 2 and 7 USD. In fact its an electromagnetic motors, without any contacts between rotor and electromagnets. And we will see new Vitrox 23mm F1.4 and 55mm F1.4 lenses.
Cheers Ken, thanks for your book and review - much appreciated. Viltrox seems to be producing magic lenses at a fantastic price! I plan to get a couple! I sold my Fuji 23mm F1.4. I really miss it but thinking of the Viltrox now and the Viltrox 52mm 1.4
Fuji decided to follow the 33mm focal length after all with their upcoming apparently amazing and awesome lens. Hope it's as good as it looks on paper. Can't wait to Sep 2.
@What Are You On About I find the focal length difficult to use for a general purpose lens, but love it for portraits. BTW, it's my only lens right now and I'm actually considering a 23mm for general use.
Did you try shooting NOT in manual mode? You could take a look at Andrew's (from Denae and Andrew) review. This lens is suppose to be catastrophic if it doesn't get a firmware update!
Can you help me by telling me how I focus 3 or 4 people with a 33 mm Viltrox at an aperture of 1.4? I always get more than one person out of focus. thank you and sincere greetings from Mexico...
I had to go & peek at the Viltrox site. No lenses for M43 cameras. For an affordable lens company from China, I'm a bit surprised with that result. Huh.... Well, enjoy folks! Looks like my trumpybucks are going into my agricultural endeavors, so no X-T4 in my near future. :v( Pooooo!
Thank you for sharing, Ken. Could you have opinions on this lens with an infrared camera/photography please? Would it work well with hotspot or astrophotography? Thank you again for your sharing.
@@KenTheoriaApophasis Actually, I was considering buying the 23mm f1.4 for X mount from Viltrox. I don't have either of Fuji's 23mm lenses. I'd be curious to know what you thought of the Viltrox 23mm before I buy?
So what you are saying is the lens is a wide angle in specification. Yet once it is put on the Fuji crop factor APSC sensor it is no longer wide angle. Because of the sensor size and crop factor. So it is technically correct for it to be a wide angle lens that is no longer wide angle once used on the Fuji system.
Hey Ken! A little unrelated but, would you happen to know if bluetooth devices can be harmed by a magnet of considerable strength? Not like an electromagnet but a decently strong medium sized consumer grade magnet? I figured if anyone would know it would be you. Thanks 👍
Yea...Lenses...interesting...how about taking shots with said lenses and showing us mere mortals how good or bad they are in the field..would be very helpful...can't seem to find a page with your shots which seems a bit odd..or am İ just looking In the wrong place?...a Link would be helpful!
I wonder how the bokeh ball after it stopped down a little. Wide open, the balls in the corners are distorted to cat eye shaped. Will it become perfect sphere after closing it down to like f1.8 or f2?
I have the Rikenon 55mm 1.4 now that you mention it and I had a physics teacher test it for radiation. The levels were the same as background radiation. I guess I was lucky with my copy, even when the glass is yellowish and looks like thorium glass for sure. But a good idea is to have old lenses checked before using them. I certainly sleep better at night now. I have a very sharp copy of xf35f2 (I had a less than ok copy before) so I will stick with that one. Interesting with Viltrox - if they made WR lenses, I would be tempted.
@Comfy Reviews That's what I figured, and I do take Ken's reviews very seriously and therefore this is likely an amazing lens. Heck, I switched from Nikon (very long time user) to Fuiji based on Ken's information, and I am very happy. But with everything that has recently happened, I think I will vote with my wallet.
Hello, thank you for the precious information. I have one question if you may spend some time to answered. What could appende if Viltrox stop firmware updates, is that going to impact the functionality. There could be any sw interfere between an old sw on the lent and new sw on the camera. I hope sw want to work always. My question is related to all viltrox lenses. Thank you.
Hi! Good that you've mentioned focus peaking! I've got version 1.1.0 on mine now and shoot on a X-T20. When I shoot manual the aperture stays at 1.4f. When I turn the ring the screen gets darker, but the focus plane stays the same until I press the shoot button halfway. Only then it shows the real aperture set with the ring. Is it me, or should I get the right aperture on screen all the time so my focus peaking is true to what I'm going to shoot? I'm new with the lens, so I don't know if it's caused by a firmware update.
ken i have a nikon 70 300 4.5-5-6G VR i can sell it for 300$ where i live. I was thinking on buying the nikon 80 200 AFD for 400$. Do you think that I make a good decision? Is the 80 200 better than the 70 300? I will shoot portraits and events
@@akunosenshi With 80-200 (no different) you will get more itneresting images, in fact, you willg et more usufel photos, they always will looks better then from 70-300.
@@nerdMike as people say, best is a version 3, AF-D, not last one - not AF-S version, because of AF motors of them broking often. Adn there is no different in optical quality in fact, or maybe just a very little different.
@@kobakakhidze100 I was meaning the AFD with dual ring . Low price here. 👍🏻 can find if lucky maybe the first afs 80_200 with slow af for that price but it's not 2.8.
Fuji opened up their mount to third party manufacturers so maybe I'll wait for the Sigma trio (16mm 1.4, 30mm 1.4, 56mm 1.4) and their made in Japan, not CPP-virus capital of the world.
@@Stories_4_Everyone The Tokina versions of these lenses look quite nice actually, I wonder if they will coat them differently to reduce the flare issue..
Hi if you can then buy the viltrox 33mm 1.4 and compare using it with the Fuji 35mm 1.4. Both lenses have their own character, you may like and keep both lenses or maybe just one lens this way you can test without any regrets. But for me I have the 35-1.4/ 35-2 and now the viltrox 33-1.4 and I love all three lenses.
What about the famous character shown by the fujifilm 35mm f1.4? After this, fujifilm won't sell a single 35mm f1.4. They know they have to renew the older lenses, 35mm, 18mm, 27mm (they won't do the 60mm macro because they have the 80mm)
@@KenTheoriaApophasis thank you i thought that is what i read/heard but couldn't find it readily. also, i did mean weather resistant (rather than sealed), but faster fingers than mind at times.
I have the 23mm, the 33mm and the 56mm lenses from Viltrox. I am going to get the 85mm II version.....I understand that you can actually change the f1.8 to an F1.6 via an upgrade. Not sure how they did it but I have friends who have done it and they do say it did work. I wonder when camera companies will upgrade their cameras and lenses to focus on FACE DIAPERS? To quote Billy idol..... "Eyes without a face....got no human grace....eyes without a face. "
@@KenTheoriaApophasis I figure the only thing it changes is the indication of 1.8 and makes into 1.6. So what it does in effect is make an 8 into a 6. Could it be the new math that everyone talks about?
