The ENTIRE grunge thing was the product of one specific A&R guy. I worked as a small time pro musician & know his name. There is a whole long story behind it, short version is he wanted to recoup money lost on a couple of big pop & hard rock tours in 1990 when an economic slump harmed ticket sales. He had a personal grudge against a couple of metal bands on his roster as well. He knew Seattle Washington had an active music scene, went up there from LA with the idea of finding the "next big thing" to "break", stumbled onto Nirvana. Started hyping the hell out of them on MTV and in the magazines, selling their shitty musicianship and their homeless junkie look as "ironically" cool. He got everybody to start making fun of metal and rock bands by pushing the idea that they were corny & outdated etc. Made it easier for him to drop them, break their contracts, not have to pay them anymore, replace them with the new cash cow. So the guy literally told a generation what to think and how to feel...and got them all clapping themselves on the backs for their "non conformism" the entire time. Scariest part of all is that he literally sold them depression and sent them all to the pharmacy for it in the bargain. These people were not genetically mentally ill, they were perfectly normal before the 1990s. I find it honestly terrifying how easily led a huge crowd of people can be.

I had mixed feelings about the grunge takeover. On one hand, I found the music depressing (coincidence so many of the grunge lead singers eventually committed suicide?), simplistic, lacked good guitar solos, and overall energy, but that being said, I get why a change had to happen as most of the LA metal bands were starting to become lame and redundant of each other by the late 80s/early 90s.

The core bands of that “movement” deserved the praise. They were all fantastic.

- I hated grunge since the day one.. Rock N Roll or goin' to see a Rock Band is basically for having a good time and escaping from daily problems for a few hours at least it's my opinion. But grunge bands injected the depression all the way they possibly can, the music, the look and the attitude . They were milking the depression cow outta the poor kids while enjoying the luxury of Hyatt Regency . Always moaning and complaining about everything is so lame and sissy .. - I love Punk Rock , Punk bands were badass , the attitude was - ''I hate you ,I ll kick your ass'' but Grunge was like - ''I hate myself I'll kick my own ass or kill myself '' . (Thank god they kept their word ) ..Anyway, my point is Punk and Grunge were never the same. They wanted to make a new Sid and Nancy out of Kurt and Courtney but it didnt work ,that was the closest they could get to Punk. I only liked Alice in Chains, they were better than the rest and Jerry Cantrell is still making great songs - Cobain was nothing but a bad shooter . - I love Joe Lynn Turner. Thank you for bringing him here .He is a Legendary Classic Rock singer but his latest album, Belly of the Beast ..Totally Metal ..I got a copy and I cant stop listening. Whoever says Rock is dead , they can simply F***K Off and enjoy their Coldplay .

Garth Brooks killed 80s rock. Grunge was only around 4 years. Country music been the most popular music for 30 years now.

My reality take on this "stuff." I grew up in LA County early 80's played all over Hollywood etc etc. Back then from 69 - 99 if you had long hair they wouldn't even hire you for 98% any job, most of us to keep our hair and not look like the Hitler cult conformists we worked in a warehouse or construction etc. Long hair was a big middle finger to the Hitler conformists that ruled the land. But here's the thing with me, as a hard core surfer (and drummer) I always questioned WHY as a musician am I 'expected; to dress a certain way to be or liked?? Why can't I go on stage and have the music do the talking...? I refused to wear spandex and all thee other bs, but at the time "YOU HAD TO HAVE AN IMAGE" that was MORE important than you song/music. Even record companies wanted you to have hair and be really good looking, THAT part of the music industry was *fake.* The music the riffs at the time were even the hair were the real deal, because again the hair you were considered Satan because you didn't conform, I could tell you stories re my hair, and it wasn't even hair sprayed or anything like that, so as far as the hair since most didn't experience the discrimination you'll never never ever really know what went down with all that...! NOW when Nirvana came out I saw the Teen Sprit video on MTV, I LITERALLY jumped off the couch with my arms in the air when I saw Kirk wearing a flannel! My friends next to me were like what's up?? I'm like FINALLY SOMEONE CAN GO ON STAGE AND WEAR A FLANNEL OR WHATEVER THEY WANT THEY DON'T HAVE TO CONFORM TO SOME DRESS CODE FREAK SHOW CIRCUS OUTFIT, and for that I love Nirvana. THAT to me was the change, not the *music* THE STUPID PHUCKING SPANDEX * IMAGE BS was the change. We all still love those kick ass song riffs and drum because music wise they were great, it's that hO dad image that got out of hand. Sorry long winded hope ya catch what I'm saying. Peace
