If I was your son...only thing I'd be doing is being at home doing what you tell me to do with no back talk or arguing. I'd do all of the cleaning so you don't have to worry with it! I'd help out in all other areas. My only happiness would be to obey you and make you happy!

I think it is a good thing for kids to learn the discipline of washing dishes. That is a basic habit everyone should be able to exercise when needed.
@jenglenn1641

The best thing with this system is that your kids are learning to be responsible for their own things including dishes which is often just done by mom or dad. This will pay off for life for them 🙌😁

I would get white plates for you and your husband. I'm weird, I love to open my cabinet and see all matching dishes. Great video..

Not weird. There is something about the symmetry of having items all the same colour and shape in the cupboard. It looks really tidy and organised. However variety is nice in certain areas too.

I recently started my 3.5 year old on a "big boy" ceramic plate. I was so fearful of broken dishes; but he is so proud and careful setting and clearing the table, I'm amazed how responsible children are when given the opportunity!!

I realise this is an old comment, but, it is a Montessori principal to give kids real dishware, if anyone is interested. She stressed how important it is.

Oh my goodness! This is genius! I love that the designs are all different but cohesive. I just retired and at almost 70 years old, Corelle is the perfect answer for these tired, weaker hands. I did something similar with my kids when they were growing up. I bought each child their own color towel, hand towel and wash cloth in the same color their choice. Then when anyone left a towel, hand towel or washcloth on the floor or not put away, I knew who to call in to put they item away. It ended the "I don"t know whose ______ that is. There were at times 6,7 or 8 children depending if we had foster kids at the time so we did have to use some solid colors and some stripe colors. It helped.

Oh my word Dawn. I love this. This is one of the first things I did after I seen the video for how much you had in your kitchen. The very next day we cleared out our dish cabinet. Mind you there are only 2 of us at home 90 percent of the time. I had at least 12 dinner plates, 9 bowls, a lot (20 plus) of coffee cups and way to many drinking glasses. So I got rid of all of those and went to the Dollar Tree. Bought white dishes. Cabinet now has 6 plates, 6 cups, 6 drinking glasses, 4 bowls and 4 salad plates. My husband and I both picked one favorite coffee cup and kept it. Our daughter picked her 1 favorite coffee cup as well for when she comes to visit. The numbers may still seem high but, we entertain on a regular bases. You can now open that cabinet and see empty space. Thanks so much to all of ya'll for this channel. It has really help to make my life so much easier. A big hello to ya'll from Texas.

I did the same thing about 2 months ago. I had plenty of dish ware. But, decided to declutter. I bought 4 of each dish ware , white with the lemon pattern on tgem of plates, saucers, coffee mugs, drinking glasses, etc. I could have just saved 4 each of what i had and given the rest away to charity. But, that pattern was so beautiful. My cabinets look clean and spacious now.

YES!!!!!! We have six kids and did this last year! Each person in our family only has one plate, one bowl, one cup, one spoon, one fork, and one knife. Total game changer!!!!! Each person has a different color so it's super easy to keep track. And yes, even the silverware! Our kids can choose to wash their dish right after use or if they're in a rush and don't have time, they can place it in a white tub UNDER the sink (so my sink always stays empty). But if they choose this option, they know they will have to scrub off gross crusty gunk before they can eat again. Lol. This has been my biggest and most favorite step towards a minimal home...by far! Thank you so much for the amazing gift you are giving to this world! God is working through you in beautiful ways!

Hi! We have 7 kids and I am thinking of doing this. Our kitchen is small, like a galley kitchen, so I'm picturing them all trying to get in there all at once to wash their dishes. Lol How does that go for you?
@deenaboese5438
@deenaboese5438 5 лет назад
It works well for us! Half the kids wash their plates immediately and the other half put them in the bin under the sink. It literally only takes 60 seconds to wash one plate and one fork so there's never any congestion. They each have a labeled spot on the counter they can place their cup since they'll use it throughout the day. Then they wash it at the end of the day (or whenever it needs it). If you have a small kitchen you will especially LOVE simplified one-and-done dishes. It will be a game changer for your kitchen AND your sanity! Lol.

@@deenaboese5438 Hi! So, I'm just getting around to using this idea after reading your comment last year. We were using the dishwasher for the majority of washing and the kitchen clean-up person handwashing the rest. Couple of weeks ago, the dishwasher quit. So, I started having each person wash their own plate and cup so as not to overwhelm the clean-up person with all the handwashing. BUT, all the dishes are white and I'm running into the problem of some leaving their dishes unwashed and/or not put away, and no one claiming them. Amazon can't get the paint pen any longer. What kind of dishes do you use? I'd love to have fiesta, but they're too expensive.

When I first saw those dishes before you said you painted them, I was preparing to look at the details to see where you got them. I was so surprised to see you made them yourself! Maybe you need to open a storefront on Etsy and start taking orders! In other news, I love having lots of plates, so that's one thing I haven't gone minimalist with, but they fit in the cabinet and don't look cluttered, so I'm happy.

We lived in a camper for a few months and used only one set for each of us. The only time I find this a struggle is if we get sick so I do keep two meals worth of dishes for us all on hand but that is it. I had the kids watch the Christmas special from the first season of Little house on the prairie where Laura and Mary were so amazed by being given their own cups lol it worked great to put things in perspective.

The favourite thing I've done to streamline dishes and etc is I got rid of my glasses ( I donated them). I use the mugs for cold beverages well as for hot beverages. Out of the way, I keep two old-fashioned glasses for adult beverages. They work for wine too. Even though I live alone I still enjoy watching your videos. You have such a charming personality. I started washing my whole family's dishes when I was your youngest's age. I think it's good for kids to wash to wash dishes and do chores.

Over a decade ago, before I realized I was a "minimalist," we bought a weekend getaway/vacation home/future retirement home. Because we did not have a dishwasher in the second home, I opted to use our very best dishes, which are not dishwasher safe. When we retired a couple of years ago, I decided to let go of almost all the dishes we had been using at our original home and to continue using the good china. As a result, about one-third of what we had in our original kitchen followed us into retirement, and about two-thirds of it did not. A few pieces have been cracked or chipped with use, but I expect by the time the good china is worn out, we'll be ready for Corelle. At a minimum, we are getting the pleasure of using these beautiful dishes rather than letting them take up space in the cabinets waiting to be used only on rare special occasions.

We are one week into having less dishes in the cabinet. I am LOVING it! The kitchen feels so much tidier. Cleaning up after a meal takes so much less time. Before it was taking 35 to 40 minutes to tidy up after dinner. I dreaded the chore each night. Now it takes between five and ten minutes! Yahoo!!

Those plates are super cute! We eat 3 meals a day every day at home because we homeschool, so making sure dishes are rinsed and put into the dishwasher after every meal is a routine mine just have had to get into. Myself included, have had to be diligent to completely clean the kitchen 3x a day and run the dishwasher every night. There are 6 of us, so each person has one large plate, one small plate, one bowl, and one mini bowl. And use pretty Mason jars as our glasses. ☺️

I *love* the personalization of the plates. I have 3 preteens and teens who although usually wash their own dishes, they sometimes try to hide their plates in the sink and there would be no denying whose plate is left behind this way. 😉

I picked up a stack of Fiesta plates, each a different gorgeous color...$2 for all 6! We each have our own. Each kid picked a coffee mug from the dollar store. We have all tile floors on a slab foundation, so with breakage high, we went cheap. It works! I keep a box of dishes and glasses handy for company, and for parties we go with disposable. Thanks for your inspiration!

We did this too, the thing I loved the most is that the kids learn to consciously think about their actions, like all of us they get on auto pilot and throwing a dish in the sink and grabbing another is never a thought until you make them think about how the old dish that maybe wasn’t even really dirty now needs washed and put away again. It helps to be more conscious about things. The only thing I didn’t think about for myself was how often I’ll use a plate to cut things on like raw chicken or something that you’d want extra plates for so I like that you didn’t get rid of your dishes until you figure out what that looks like for you.

Mostly, I love your videos, and you've inspired me a lot. This is too extreme for me personally, tho. I would rather have more dishes, and put them in the dishwasher; that looks better to me than dishes in the rack. I also would rather have all same color of dishes. But I like your porcelain marker idea; I'd never heard of that. I've watched dozens of your videos; you're so cute and cheerful, and your house looks so nice!

I gave away many sets of fiesta ware , they looked pretty but were heavy and it became a COLLECTION, a word I hate. Then I purchased set of 8 beautiful stoneware sets. Gave those away and bought white correl set of 4. Omg. I love them so much! Yes they easier for kids to clean but when you are older like with arthritis, it’s easier too.

I decluttered all the kids plateware away. Threw away alot of old cups they looked super old to recycle. My silverware decluttered itself and walked away. I gave some tupperware my sister said she needed. I need to declutter my pans. Can i upgrade my appliances and donate the others to a womens shelter? My mom is ocd about her pillows and towels and gets some new ones every few months. I told her they accept old towels, pillows, blankets and newspaper at animal shelters. She liked the idea of recycling and helping out at the same time🤗 I think we are just a working process.

Good morning! (in the UK at least.) Loving your graphic design skills. Perfect timing with this video as I'm kitchen decluttering at the moment. I want to remodel and exchange the wall cabinets for open shelves. So I've taken the doors off these cabinets to get a feel for what it would be like. The kitchen already feels more open and having things on display is helping me reassess what I absolutely need. Have a great day and thank you!

We have been doing this too! And it works so well. I'm also finding that once you start to wash the set you have used straight away, the next step is to start drying it on the spot and putting it away. It's so easy mentally to know that you only have one or two things to wash and put away. Love the decorating idea. :)

Melanie, you're correct that it is easier to do it yourself, but I want to encourage you to let him help if at all possible. I used to just do it all myself, but several children later, I now see the repercussions. I'm tired, they complain now as I try to implement a chore schedule to get the help I need, and I see that I've robbed them of quality time with me and the work ethic I want them to have. I *do* believe it's not too late, but it is way harder to fix than if I had slowed down and not wanted the work to be done perfectly. Blessings to you!

A few years ago I simplified and bought a set of white corelle dishes on a black Friday sale. We also use small & large mason jars for drinking glasses that also double for food storage 🤗 I have 1 large cast iron pan that I use for all my frying etc...For pots I have 1 large (for soups/pasta) 1 medium and 1 small(for veggies/leftovers). I also have 1 medium & 1 large crockpot l. I have never ran into a situation were I needed more pots. I think post people have too many dishes and pots. It feels great to have space in my cupboards 🤗 I also reduced my storage containers and stick with mostly mason jars and glass pyrex dishes. I also found I had too many casserole dishes. I reduced them to a few of the main ones I always used. It's amazing when you pack away things you never used and you never miss them!! I always keep a few boxes in my garage to send to thrift or give to friends/family. Instead of buying cheap sets of pots/dishes I find it was wise to invest in good pots/cast iron etc. that will last you forever. LOVE this video 😍

It is only two of us now. I have back issues and we decided to buy the Fisher Paykel dish washer drawers - Fantastic! It is much easier on my back. I can run the dishes everyday, but use very little water - basically using half a dishwasher. I have a bottom drawer, but this only gets used when I have a lot of dishes. I could have just gone with the one drawer, and had another cabinet below. I got the unit with the tall drawer on top and shorter one on the bottom. These are pricey, but worth the back and water saving!

Thanks again for another wonderful video! We simplified our kids dishes to one bowl, plate and cup as well. But I hadn't thought of having them wash their own dishes, I think I'll give it a try. We also have color coded dishes, with 5 kiddos it makes it a lot easier. I should also get rid of some of my cookware, we do have too much.

Amen to this idea! I did this about six weeks ago & it is wonderful. I don't have a dishwasher & I never have a big sink of dirty dishes now! Hallelujah! I did this with silverwear, pots, pans, appliances, cooking utensils, etc. I highly recommend it! My mother commented " but what if you have company?" My response " I haven't hardly had company in 30 years so I think it will be alright."

We just got rid of all the plastic cups that took over my kitchen and then are such a pain to dry after running through the dishwasher! So now everyone has their own distinct glass for the day and I am so happy! I haven't made the jump to one set of dishes per person by I am thinking hard about it! Thanks for the pen tip!

An in-sink drying rack!!! Oh my goodness why did I not think of that! None of us like drying dishes so there’s quite often stuff in the drying rack (kids lunchboxes especially after school) and it looks so visually cluttered. I’m off to find an in-sink drying rack!

Donate your used glasses and glass cases to the Lions Eye Club. Upcoming optometrist doctors intern there to low income kids, adult, senior citizens who need need prescription glasses. They santize and get the accurate prescription reading off the glasses and sort them so the patients will be able to have options.

I bought my white Corelle dishes when I was single in 1976. They have survived marriage, kids and I still have them. And I still love them. I think in these 44 years we have broken 3 plates and they were quickly replaced. There were times they were tossed, dropped and crashed by the kids and we were surprised at not even a chip. They are tough. Now my kids are married with kids and corelle dishes.

I love this I believe darci Isabella does the same thing with her dishes. We love Correll too because it is so durable and lightweight for the kids. We use the salad plates for every meal instead of the really big plates that way we are not putting too much food our plates and doing smaller portions. I Thrifted all my plates several years ago but they're definitely getting harder to find as a thrift stores. As far as our pots and pans go I use the Revere Ware copper bottom they were actually my grandmother's and they have held up for 70 years now she used them and then my mom used them and now we use them. I actually have a box in my attic Revere Ware pots and pans that Ive Thrifted over the years for my kids so when they grow up and move out they have a good set of pots and pans to take with them.

I agree with Tom about a neat & tidy kitchen bringing peace to our homes. Since it (is) my particular tendency to tidy up as soon as a mess is made throughout the day, and since this (is) now my natural habit, I have also established routines to keep this habit in place. I run the dishwasher every night no matter what, AND, I try to never leave dishes out on the counters. (Think Flylady's "shiny sink" concept.) I keep the sink clear by using the dishwasher as a DDDU (dirty dish disposal unit). As soon as a dish is dirtied, it goes straight into the dishwasher to be in waiting for the nightly dishwasher run. Limiting the number of dishes (your idea!) has made this habit so much easier to instill. Your "having your own set of dishes per child idea" is unique. Here is another idea if you would appreciate a helpful hint, and, if this idea becomes too much stress for the kids to continue with doing. Post it sticky note by the sink that says, "keep clear." This will remind the kids to load their dirty dish as soon as it is ready to be washed. Wa-la! No dishes on the counters..resulting in a "shiny sink!" This will also keep the kids from having to wash their dish immediately upon using it. Which, although might seem like a good idea to begin with, might tend to fail realistically, given the daily demands of life and the natural tendencies of just being a "child."

I have done this for 1 week. I have so much more peace and more discipline to make sure I'm cleaning dishes as they're used. I can go to bed when the kids do without staying up to do mt. Dishes. I go to bed with NO anxiety about a dirty kitchen. Ur didn't overwhelm me or load me with more GUILT like it once did because it's small tasks throughout the day that don't take a ton of time themselves. Those add up to very very little work after dinner and TIME TO RELAX! And a Day well spent- not on guilt OR dishes!!

We went one step further. We gave away our stove. And yes, we do cook at least 2 meals per day. (It was a whole snowball thing that began with a mouse.) We replaced our huge hulking stove with a cook plate and an air fryer. It’s been about 3 months and I love having furniture instead of a hulking appliance. Minimal pans,er, pan. I guess when Thanksgiving rolls around we will opt for a chicken or just a turkey breast. :) I do have a massive stack of plates. They do come in handy when family stays over, but it seems reasonable to store the extras out of the kitchen until needed. Awesome.

What a great idea on simplifying the dishes! I also love the idea of the different designs for each child. This is also a great way of teaching responsibility to the kids by cleaning up after themselves. I'm in the process of simplifying our kitchen. It's a slow process, but I will get there. My struggle now is, my daughter is 18 and will be moving out in a few years. So I am thinking about storing items that I think she will need so it won't cost so much to get her started on her own. I don't won't to bog her down with a lot of items that she doesn't need. It's a long and thoughtful process, but I will get there! Haha! You all have a blessed weekend! Thank you for sharing your minimalist lifestyle. You all are so inspiring!

I don’t miss any of it and still have so much more to do. But of everything I have done from your videos….the kitchen and dishes has made the biggest impact…I can’t get over the differnce somthing so small and simple has made….I mean a really HUGE improvement in a part of the house that was always driving me batty!!!!

When my kids were young we did the same thing. We had clear glass dishes. I got out the nail polish and each of my four children painted designs on the under side of there dishes. We only hand washed so the polish held up really well. They seemed to like washing there own dishes. They also were glad they didn’t have to wash everyone’s dishes. 😊

Simplifying dishes is such a life changer! I cringe when I see how much cookware and dishware people have. We have one plate for everyone but not specific plates, just enough so dishes have to he done after every meal. We also have only two pots and three pans, all with different purposes. Dishes are never out of control now (:

I have a family of 5. After watching your other video about simplifing the kitchen I unloaded all plates & bowls & cups except 5 of each. This has been great! Really has not been a problem. I keep the extras in the basement, for when the boys have over a girlfriend for dinner or company comes. I run my dishwasher less and it is much easier to manage! Love it. In the summer though, we do use more paper plates for toast at breakfast or sandwiches at lunchtime.

Super idea!! I love how solution oriented you are. I have 2 sets of dishes, but we entertain a ton. Sometimes 20 people. And in my culture paper plates are tacky. I have come to love how special I feel having a nice plate. We are good about putting them directly in the dishwasher so the kitchen always looks tidy.

I would love to know how the marker on the dishes has held up. I still see you using the dishes today, I think. Many years ago I got so fed up with washing cups and towels ALL SUMMER LONG! The kids picked a plastic tumbler in their color and a towel. That was theirs. It was the only cup and the only towel they could use. If the towel ended up on the wet bathroom floor, they didnt have a towel to use until they washed it. Period. Worked GREAT!

My wife would never go for this, but I have been trying to get rid of plastic containers and serving items - I just feel more comfortable washing metal in the dishwasher. I've been trying to get us down to a solid dishwasher load and that's been working well - when the dishwasher needs to be run we usually have enough left for one meal (in case we forgot to run it, which happens a lot). Maybe one day.

I actually did this to our dishes about a month ago and it was absolutely the BEST thing I have ever done in our kitchen! I dreaded doing dishes before because usually there was a mountain that had built from the last 3-4 days! I realized that if we had less dishes out there would be less that could build up. Now I there is no mountain to be had! If you are considering doing this, just try it!! Like Dawn said, you can just store your extra dishes and if you need to pull a few more out you can totally do that! I promise, you will not regret trying this if dishes are something that you have struggled to keep on top of.

I love your videos and your inspiration! Me and my husband have only been married for coming upon 3 years. We are in a completely different place than most of your content but I still find it all applicable. But I would like to hear your thoughts and stories on what organizing looked like when you were first married and what minimalism would look like if it was just the two of you. I have struggle areas in our home. And our closet I thought I had it figured out but then one week it just exploded and I haven’t gotten it back. 😭 I thought I had the kitchen down but it again exploded. Thank you for your content and your witness! Keep them coming! Sundays videos are my favorite.

I can't help wondering how the kids feel about it. They are so cute and so are you, but wowee, this seems over the top. just feels too restrictive. cinnie2 I have thought about this for years thanks to reading aloud the Little House on the Prairie series to my kids. This used to be the complete norm for families. The kids learned responsibility, plus dishes never got put off till later. Win win! I tried this before and it didn’t work because I got rid of stuff for company. This time I have just hid the extras for company.

I’m pregnant again and its my one year old, me and my fiancé and we are struggling to do dishes so I suggested this and we will be buying new sets soon.
