Thought: poundcake might have been a way to use up a surplus of dairy and eggs? Maybe when it was time to freshen up and rid your pantry of aging supplies, you made a poundcake. We know they wouldn’t be wasteful so there must be a reason for such an indulgent recipe.
Pink Lady 1973 Australia John Cripps is the plant-breeder who naturally cross bred the first ever Cripps Pink apple in Australia in 1973. Mr Cripps had the ingenious idea to cross a Golden Delicious and a Lady Williams, so creating this delicious new variety.
Your live chats are always so much fun! Thank you. Despite the recent result in Ron's case, cutting your own hair is a great idea. You can learn to do it quite expertly. I started doing this years ago, after getting tired of overpaying for bad haircuts. Further, the sanitation of haircutting places is often questionable. At home, it's virtually free (after you buy the basic equipment needed), you can cut it just like you want it, at any time, and you will get better at it each time. I get better haircuts at home than I can buy, for free, never any wait, and it is always clean and safe. Self-reliance is always the best way to go.
Agreed! ive been cutting mine for about 5 years now, and while everyone was getting crazy pandemic hair I was just laughing 😂 I can cut it whenever I find time, and I always get exactly what I want - or when I don't I just have myself to blame 😅
Those would be amazing for breakfast with coffee. Had no idea you taught classes! That’s really awesome. Living history is so invaluable. Be it what you and Townsends do or be it Medieval and Viking Age. We just can’t appreciate the things our ancestors did if we never experience those things for ourselves. People travelled across the country and the world on sail boats and by horseback! Now that we have planes and cars most of us seldom leave our own states. Crazy. The more advanced we get the less driven we are to live. Thanks for living guys!
Spanish American War, apparently 3 months and 23 days according to Wolfram Alpha, I’m English so my knowledge about American history is limited but I’m learning a video at a time, I’m like a sponge soaking it up and I’m loving it.
We just watched Justine make the pound cakes now were visiting with you. My husband says he would tried these as they look good and the fact that Ron likes them lol they make me think of English tea cakes
Pink Lady Apples are also known by their cultivar name, Cripps Pink. Pink Lady apples were bred in 1973 by Australia's John Cripps. They are delicious and they were my beautiful grandmother's favorite apple. I love that you saved this tree!!!
If I recall Pink Ladies are from Australia and they are soooo yummy 🤤 I have some really old cooking pots and utensils. I wish I lived closer to go to Pioneer Days
So fun! I LOVE this chew and chat! It didn't hurt that cooking and plants are two of my favorite things! Oh and dandelion jelly! It is tedious to make, but it is so delicious! 😍🤩😋
I’m just catching the show now & loved it. That cake looks delicious & it was great seeing our little buddy, Mish Mish again. He is so precious! I always try to rush my Wednesday evening appointments to watch by 7 but, sadly, it doesn’t always work out. At least now I can relax & watch just before going to sleep & feel happy.
My grandma always told me that Pink Lady apples were the best baking apples. She was born in 1918 so I’m assuming she’s tried many varieties. I make straight up baked apples with them, as well as pies and empanadas since they are sweet and tart.
Hi Justine and Ron. Have been watching your channel for a while now. Keep up the great work. Wow, you are lucky to have a Pink Lady apple tree. That is my favourite apple down here in Australia. It is a pink blush medium size apple, crispy and sweet, lovely to eat fresh. You could cook with it too. You will enjoy eating them. Hope the tree grows well for you.
Y’all make me wanna move to St Gen so I can come to all these amazing events 😭😭 unfortunately my family is in AZ so that’s why I’m here but … I can still dream 🥺🙏🏻💞✨ (love you Ron & Justine! You don’t know the joy you bring me.)
Pink :Lady is actually a trademark since the real name of the apple is called a Cripps Pink named after John Cripps who developed it back in 1970's when he crossed a Golden Delicious with a Lady Williams Apple.. It grows in hot climates with a long growing season
Nice pound cakes and it’s the first time that I heard about caraway seed. I also love your plants. They are beautiful. Thank you, Ron for the history facts on that happened of this month. Take care both of you and thank your for the streaming. Love Mish Mish. He is adorable ❤🐱
That lavender brings back memories. When we lived in Richmond, VA a few years ago, we planted one outside. It was a "if it survives, great, if not, oh well" kind of things. It turns out that it LOVED that climate (ugg!) and literally took over two yards! Lol. We gave that stuff to anybody that wanted it, as much as they wanted. And the more we cut it back, the more it took over! 😂😂😂
Interesting you mentioned Danbury, I'm originally from Redding CT, a small town settled by John Read in 1711. The whole area is saturated with early American history, it's a great place.
So excited about all the trees you're going to be planting on your land. I have to tell you that down the road from where we live there is an apple orchard that's 100 years old. I collected some apples from them last year, I can take apples from there with the permission of the owners, the apples are absolutely delicious! I have never tasted apples like those before. I took the seeds and put them in a damp paper towel and a zip bag and put them in the refrigerator for six months. They sprouted and I just planted them in soil the other day. Hopefully, they're not a type of apple that has been tampered with or grafted, maybe I will be able to grow one of those wonderful apple trees. My husband teases me about going to look at my houseplants, and especially my seedlings, first thing in the morning. I am kind of obsessed with my plants also. I haven't been very successful starting apple tree plants. I gave a couple seeds that had sprouted to my employer several years ago and he successfully grew two trees and gave me one of them. I was thinking about sending you some of these apple seeds. 😄.... Pink lady apples are delicious but not as good as these apples from the apple orchard. 😁
When Justine reluctantly caved and ate the rest of the pound cake cookie after stating multiple times that she would not eat another bite, I related way too much
Pink Ladies are my favourite apple. They are a really tasty apple to eat and they are also great for pies and stewed apple recipes. Yay. you will have an Australian apple in your garden. I wish I could come to Pioneer Days.....a bit too far but maybe one day.
Hi Ron and Justine! I just wanted to say hello and tell you how much I love your channel! My husband and I live in Kansas City, MO, and would love to visit St. Genevieve soon! It's only 4 hours away from us. Have you heard of Herman MO? That's one of our favorite historical towns, and it's fairly close to you. Anyway, I hope we can experience pioneer days in st.gen, and maybe we'll see you around. Take care and God bless ❤
I wish we could come to the pioneer day😭. we're in Maryland. Growing up we always had a lady come to school called Betty's Trunk. We made wax candles cornhusk dolls and all kinds of fun stuff. I miss doing that. Idk anything around our area. Hope it's a great turnout 😊
I have made a real pound cake with a pound of everything before and it was great! The trick was to bake it in a bunt pan because it is a big cake. 😊 I love baby horses. What kind of horses does your dad have? 🐎
It is early Thursday morning, in ireland. I am listening to the dawn chorus and watching you guys. This is how I spent every Thursday morning since you have been in your cabin. I watched Justine before that. I don't know how I found you(just seemed pop up) Ron was not in the first ones I saw. It was very much a cooking and early American soap opera. Wow! How long ago was that? Cee from the little haunted cottage in ireland 💚💚💚🍀🍀🍀
Origin of Pink Lady Apples was Australia,John Cripps Dept of Agriculture 1970;s crossed a golden delicious with a late ripening variety called Lady Williams...arrived here in U.S. in the 1990's.look up Stemilt World Famous fruit, it says Lady Pinks like hot weather, other facts ,too. Best wishes with the Pioneer days, cooking, growing and building your life together.💞Love you two.🙏
Always enjoy your videos! Praise God for Who He is in your lives as He has been blessing you richly! I admire you Ron & Justine for all the hard work you both do! God bless you & keep you!
Starting in 1821, John James Audubon lived in New Orleans and therefore multiple parks are named after him. There is a higher end neighborhood in New Orleans called "Audubon" along with a park and zoo. You may know it as the "Audubon Zoo" and the "Audubon Aquarium of the America's". This guy is an OG in NOLA history lol! I've lived in New Orleans and have been to all these places. I highly recommend you visit! Especially if you love French history in America, similar to Ste.Gen.
Pink Lady apples are mine and my family's favorite apples! They're a perfect combination of sweet and tart and absolutely beautiful! I live in South Florida and apples don't grow well here :(
I cut my own hair too! Between my mom trimming it when I was little and my self-directed makeover at 17, I've only ever gotten a professional haircut once... and it sucked, so I kept doing it myself 😂 also my favorite apple varieties are Fuji and Blushing Gold
Just to clarify that the 15th President of the United States was James Buchanan. He was the only bachelor president and remained a bachelor all of his life.
I am from the UK and a bit surprised the American recipe actually uses a pound in weight. All Amercian recipes I come across now use volumes like a 'Cup' whereas UK recipes always use weight.
@@heller7083 they really do. The only things I don’t like them in is things like tarts and any recipe you leave the skin on for. The skin stays a little tough and thick. But if the skins are removed before cooking they’re great
I looked up the pre revlution presidents so who was Bachman? In Burlington, New Jersey, the young Cherokee men met Elias Boudinot the 9th president of the contenal congress, president of the American Bible Society and a former member and president of the Second Continental Congress. He and Watie impressed each other, and Watie asked Boudinot for permission to use his name, which he gave. When enrolled at the Foreign Mission School, Watie started using the name Elias Boudinot, which he kept for the rest of his life. We had a James Buchanan after 1776. I have never heard of a Bachman.
Hello you beautiful people. Years ago I heard about the fifteen-year-old girl that rode a half-wild stallion into the countryside to sound the alarm. It was in the dead of night. Wonderful story. It wasn't until 1920 that women got the right to vote on a national level. All these people in the 1820s & beyond created this nation. Thanks to all the people. Regarding your pound cake, looks absolutely delicious. Can't cook that well. I'll see if I can find a relative to make it for me. I'll send Justine's video around to all the cooks I know. Hint, hint.
I was wondering if it would be out of period to use orange water instead of rose water due to allergies? Then you pull out the lavender bushes which I'm also very allergic to! My throat gets tight.
first time my wife cut my hair, when we got married, we were poor so to save money, she said Ill cut your hear. So she never did it before and I'm sitting in front of the sink so I hear her put the electric razor to the top front of my head and I hear "buzz" then I hear her say "sh*t" very quite like to. I look up and see a bold spot on my head, no way to salvage it, so other then Basic Training that's the only other time I was bald. When you go to Boston gotta get your photos on the USS Constitution. And for Spanish American War, I'm probably the only Spanish American War Reenactor that has been to 2 battlefields from the Spanish American War.
