I'd personally like to take this opportunity to thank all my students and everyone out there on RU-vid watching my videos! It's been a great year and I can't wait to make even more videos for all of you to watch and continue learning English. Thank you very much - and Happy Thanksgiving to everyone out there! And to learn more about Thanksgiving, watch this video!

Hello everybody and welcome back to Everybody Loves English
with ME, your English teacher, Mr. Nick! Today we talk about a holiday that many people in North America love to celebrate. Thanksgiving!
Since ancient times, thanksgiving celebrations have been celebrated all over the world. As a way of thanking God for their good harvests and foods, the ancient Greeks, Romans, Egyptians, Chinese, and many more, would hold festivals each year. The first Thanksgiving ceremonies took place in North America long before the arrival of European settlers. Native Americans performed songs, dances, and prayers as part of their ceremonies.
During the winter of 1620 and 1621, many Pilgrims died from disease and starvation during their first winter in North America. After a year in this new and difficult land, the Pilgrims needed to learn how to survive. Native Americans taught them how to grow corn and other crops. They also taught them how to how to fish, hunt, collect berries and find food to survive.
In 1621, the Pilgrims had a very successful harvest and they were able to collect and save lots of food. This was very important. Especially for the very long and cold winter ahead. They had a large feast and celebrated for three days because they were very thankful. The Pilgrims invited the Natives to their celebration because they had taught them so much about surviving in America. After that, they continued having this dinner every year to celebrate and show gratitude for their harvest. The Europeans celebrated thanksgiving for the first time in North America in Newfoundland, Canada with a traditional British feast in the year 1578, more than 40 years before the American Thanksgiving. They continued this tradition for many years after that.
These days, Canadians continue to celebrate Thanksgiving on the second Monday in October.
Americans celebrate it on the fourth Thursday in November. In North America, Thanksgiving is a holiday for spending time and having a blast with family and friends. It's a day to stop working and give thanks for all the amazing things we have in our lives. We are thankful for our health, our family, our friends, our careers, education, and our freedoms. Families usually share a festive meal with a variety of traditional dishes, including turkey and stuffing, mashed potatoes, pumpkin, cranberry sauce, and some delicious pumpkin pie which is always out of this world!
Now, here's a little homework!
What are you most thankful for? Please share your answers in the comments section below this video. Also, do you celebrate a holiday like Thanksgiving where you are from? If so, please tell me more about it! I'm looking forward to reading all your answers!
