I had never cared to look into retinoids but now that I’m in my late 20s I am noticing changes in my skin. Thank you for such an informative introduction to make the choosing process a lot less intimidating with everything in the market!
Hi Liah! I just wanted to say that I really believe that discovering your channel completely changed my skin. I had severe acne in high school and really damaged my skin barrier trying to fix it. Then I discovered your channel and went back to the basics and really focused on things didn’t harm my skin barrier and within 6 months I was getting breakouts once a month instead of several times a week.
I'm a few months into my retinol journey, after dealing with acne for 10 years of my life I have to say that retinol has really made a difference in my skin, keeping things under control without any major breakouts, helping with oilyness and overall look and texture of my skin, my pores look much more smaller than before too. Excited to try out other retinoids in the future! ty Liah for your recommendations :3
Introducing retinol into my skincare routine has helped a lot, personally. I have had acne for 10+ years now and finally feel like am at a point of progress and recovery ! I started with the granactive emulsion from The Ordinary and got through two bottles of that before starting Differin which is showing great results even after just over 2 months of using 😊
I'm continually frustrated by Naturium. When they first came out with the retinol product Leah featured in this vid I was very interested in it, but I always want to know the percentage before jumping into a retinol product. I emailed their customer service to ask the percentage of just the retinol, and they replied saying they couldn't give away their formulation. I was like WHAT? I didn't ask for their whole secret formula, just the retinol percentage, which is traditionally disclosed by most brands. I hear they have some great products but I just ca't get on board with their company ethos.
Actually no, traditionally, big companies DON'T disclose retinol percentage. The biggest example is CeraVe, Neutrogena, ROC, etc. I don't think retinol that isn't disclosed just to protect a product from mindless copycats affects a company's "ethos." If there was one thing I would ask for Naturium, maybe it's to create samples for new users to try just so they can gauge how it will work for our skin--and that would solve the problem of whether their retinol will work for your skin.
@@thegoodkindofweirdo I don't think revealing the percentage of retinol in your products will expose it to copycats. It's true that many companies did not disclose their retinol percentages in the past (and they are not required to). That's probably because they didn't feel the need to as consumers back then were far less knowledgeable and informed about ingredients and percentages. But this has all changed in recent years. It would be ignorant for companies to assume that their customers will not be interested to know these things.
@@s_shaleh Ok, sure, I'll have to stand corrected on that, but I hope you get my point of how formulation can change *everything,* and that could mean that even lower percentages of retinol can get more potent with better formulation--and that will never be seen on the back of the packaging. As much as companies should acknowledge that people look into percentages, I also think consumers should also not doubt a retinol formulation just because no percentage was shown and still give some consideration to trying it out. Although, I have to state this again, it would be lovely for a company to sell trial sizes of retinol products so that they know if it's working for them. Just my 2 cents. :)
@@s_shaleh I definitely agree with you. The company wrote me off without trust in me as a consumer. I am a certified skincare consultant, and I understand the basic concept of formulation making a difference. I’ve used 6 other retinol products over the past couple years, all with disclosed percentages. I feel customers should have a right to know especially because it can be quite an irritating ingredient, and we know our own skin. No brand should expect blind trust (especially naturium after their launch scandal).
Just one person's two cents - but I bought the Naturium retinol on a whim from Target. I've been through nearly the whole bottle with little to no positive change in my skin. I've used other retinols before with great results, so I'm led to believe the percentage must be pretty low!
Oh.. what a great timing. Last night I talked to my friend about Retinol as I have been using the encapsulated one for a year, and recently the brand that I use (Somethinc) they reformulate their retinol and add Granactive type and the Pure Retinol type alongside the encapsulated one. So I am so confused as which to try and this video really help. Thanks!!
So which somethinc retinol that you gonna use? Did you get any purging when you use encapsulated retinol? I Never use any retinol before and i wanna try Somethinc brand but there are 3 types of retinol products and im confuse which product should i use as beginner. Should i try the encapsulated or the granactive since the both of these products are suitable for beginner (as i read on their ig)
The brand Geek & Gorgeous has affordable A-Game serums that contain retinal (0.05 and 0.1%) and I'd love to hear if anyone has experience of them?? I'm surprised that brand isn't mentioned anywhere that much! I've just ordered their C-Glow 15% + ferulic acid serum which I've heard some skin care youtubers talk about :) I've been using different retinol products for years now and started with the OT ones in my late twenties (I'm turning 33 in a month) like many of us :) Out of the ones I've tried my favorite has been the La Roche Posay 0.3 retinol + B3 serum. I'm surprised it isn't mentioned here! The added niacinamide and adenosine are a great anti-aging combo in that one. It has fragrance but my skin didn't mind it and it isn't overpowering... Right now I'm using the ROC daily line smoothing serum but that has an offputting fragrance and the dropper doesn't really work so wouldn't repurchase that one. Oh and it bothers me that ROC don't disclose the percentage of retinol in their products!
@@violaszoke7959 Ooh that cleanser is in my cart at this moment! :D Just waiting to finish my current cleanser :) Thanks for the tip, need to look into that serum as well!
I also recently got the G&G Retinal 0.05%, 12% AHA Vit C, Hyaluronic Acid as well as their toner. In my opinion, the Vit C works so well and I’ve seen great difference in how my skin looks. However, I just started and I use the retinoid sparingly, so I haven’t seen any results. Hopefully soon!
I’m just getting started on retinol and started using the Olay Regenerist Retinol24 moisturizer. It is so gentle and feels so silky smooth on my skin and I love that I can simplify my skincare routine with one fewer step. No issues with irritation even when I use it every night, but still too early to see results. Olay & Neutrogena’s Rapid Wrinkle Repair retinol moisturizers were recommended by RU-vid Derms Dr Dray, Dr Sugai, and The Budget Dermatologist. Would love to see what you think of Olay & Neutrogena, Liah!
Yeah same here. The Stratia one is perfect to use daily and for all types of skin. Whenever I use it, my skin feels so smooth and acne free. I’m testing higher strength retinol now but may come back to it
I'm 6 months into the "journey", I started with The Ordinary 0.2% in squalene then 0.5 and just started on the 1%. My skin purges a lot but never peels, so far, still no results but I'm patient :)
@@hanita6 yes, my skin does not "purge" anymore or get irritated (my neck still does, though but it works wonders on my hands). When I finish this bottle I want to move on to prescription strength, though.. The Ordinary is great to ease your skin into the journey but it is not the final destination at all. I don't think you could ever get the full effects of retinol use just with these..
Awesome video, I like that your video focuses on progression rather than jumping right in. I used differin gel for 9 months, before that I was using the la roche posay retinol for a year or two. I finally went to the dermatologist and my doctor and I decided that 0.1 tretinoin would be the best for the results I was trying to obtain. Literally the best decision I’ve ever made.
I love Maelove’s Moonlight Retinal Super Serum. It has niacinimide, bisabolol, ceramide, tea extract, hyaluronic acid and squalane. I have sensitive, rosacea-prone skin, and this has not caused any irritation. I wish they would bottle the scent as a fragrance because it smells divine!
This video came right on time! Just got my Hyram retinol serum yesterday, and I was wondering how will I incorporate it with my Krave beauty regimen. I’ve tried mixing 1 drop of it with my oat so simple moisturizer. So far I think it didn’t irritate my sensitive skin. Hope to see some improvement on my skin.. Thanks Liah. Longtime fan (pre-krave era) here from Philippines.
Great hair! Could you pls make a video about achieving this color on dark hair and not completely destroying them in the process? (and about maintenance too! %))
For me Truth Treatment 5% retinol balm is tbe best retinol. It is fat based, 5% concentration combined with 20% vitamin C all in one product. Never irritates theskin thanks to the vitamin C. Really great, and there is a lower concentration version as well.
Hyram retinol seems like the best for me. I'm in a hot climate and sometimes oils just sit on my skin like an unpleasant layer. So it's emulsified and with Squalene already has me peaked
I had to medicate because of my severe acné and finally was able to have no acne and perfect skin. But since I’m in my 20s I decided to start with retinol to prevent wrinkles. I started two weeks ago and my acne is back again, painful, red and big pimples. I suffered so mucho because of it in the past so I’m going to give up retinol, there is other anti-aging products and I don’t want to be months purging for just the sudden trend of adding retinols in the routine (no offense, is just that I was very depressed because of my acne in the last and I don’t want to suffer again form acné)
I’m using the Medik 8 Retinal 1, I prefer retinal over regular retinol. I used all the TO retinols but hated the texture as I don’t like oil formulas. I did like the Olay face cream retinol 24, and also Paulas choice 1%, although I think I’ll stick to Retinal for now as I find they work the best for my skin
Question! The cells in our body only divide a finite number of times, (about 50 times), this is one of the main reasons for why we age. Does this mean that using retinoids in your 20s, 30s and 40s will cause our cells to become senescent and die off sooner?
My skin tolerates vitamin A really well so I've been incorporating it in my skincare routine months ago and now I feel like I'm ready to try something stronger intermediate-advanced level! For the advanced recommendations, how often do you suggest using them weekly? The packaging makes them look like spot treatments so I couldn't really figure out whether they're supposed to be used on your whole face (just like the others) and it's just a way to preserve the active ingredients or you have to be more careful with the application.
I love your videos when you talk about skin and products. You made me realize that I have dehydrated skin. My skin is off the charts now and I want to get it under control. Just yerterday I was thinking on retinol. I had differing in my cart. I'm going to get the ordinary
I’ve been using the ordinary retinols for about a year, first just a few nights a week and building it up until I can use them nightly without issues, once I finish a bottle of nightly use I move up in strength. I don’t peel, but if I over-do it my skin goes red tight and warm, like a sunburn and it is very uncomfortable. I just started adapalene last night (with the moisturiser-adapalene-moisturiser sandwich method) and I do not expect to be able to use it nightly ever or to build up a tolerance as quickly as I did to retinol but I felt I was ready for the next step. Thank you for the video!
Got the Ordinary 0.2% in Squalane. It was not as bad as expected but it kicked me when i least expected it and suckerpunched in crucial moments, but after 3 months now its amazing. I use it every other day over my moisturizer and am getting great results, and im 20
I’m trying my first retinol with sweet chef beet serum. I was scared of what results i’d get but i’m quite happy with it. I should add that i only use it twice a week, and i do not mix it with other serums as the brand suggests. I apply after cosrx snail essence and vanicream, so i use it with caution.
JSS retinol treatment oil contains 0.2% pure retinol, if anybody wants to know. Also quite sad that Naturium is soon going to discontinue their retinoid oil. I loved using it.
@@LiahYoo They currently have a clearance for the retinoid oil and vitamin C oil by slashing half the price. Also for the overnight sleeping cream but only to reformulate it without honey.
Hi Liah, can you do the sections or clips embedded for each topic/product mentioned in the video with RU-vid trends: chapters lately. It’s helpful to revisit the subjects to find out the information.
Hi liah….your videos are very informative and helpful…could you please do a skin care video for mid 30’s with matured stressed skin ,hyperpigmentation ,fine lines and prominent laugh lines(for oily dehydrated skin ) ….thank you…looking forward for your response ..😘
Skincare is so difficult. I actually had a horrible experience with Differin. So I’m scared to try something else. I waited for the purge to be over but after months my acne had just gotten worse from the adapalene.
I have sensitive skin but my Derm prescribed me with trets 0.025%. At first I was scared, but surprisingly my skin like it. Honestly, I was ready for purging and peeling but I'm not. Now I breakout less. I have been using it for a year and half now. Thanks god.
I’ve been using retinol for 3 weeks now. I’m using the ordinary 0.2% and already started purging on the second week. Let’s see if it helps my acne or not in the long run. Not a fan of using acids so I might not use it for too long. It’s just something I kinda wanted to try out. I think out of all acids I love using vitamin c the most since I’m always full of acne scars on my right cheek and chin.
Surprised to see that IOPE 0.1% is the strongest you have ever tried - they have 0.3% options. Thanks so much for explaining clearly about the percentages! I was confused about that. Have you tried The Ordinary Retinoid 2% in emulsion formula? They used both HPR and Retinol in that version, and I was wondering the difference between just HPR.
I feel that the ordinary retinols break me out . Same to the the one from inkeylist .I think some people who are acne prone don't do well with squalene oils
Thank you for all the infos. I’ve recently started using the ordinary one. I’ve heard different opinions about using it under eye area and I don’t know what to do. What is your advice?❤️
Would love to hear your review of Kiehls Micro Dose pure retinol serum…been using for about 2 weeks, I’m very impressed! Would love to hear your thoughts! Much love 💛🙏🏻
Always enjoy and trust what Liah recommends from other brands. Liah, what’s your opinion on CBD facial oils? If retinol related products have to be so carefully evaluated before getting into, I’d rather use something else such as CBD oil for the anti-aging. Been using Flora+Blast, feel like gets the job done well.
I do think it can be beneficial! I think it's a promising ingredient but the sourcing and processing seem to be inconsistent across brands so sticking to the brand you trust might be the key! :)
Hi Liah!! 😊 thank you for these great recommendations! I’m currently using the retinol serum by La Roche Posay which claims 0.3% incapsulated retinol and vitamin b3. Do you know this product and what do you think about it? Have a great day 😘😘
What's the best way to put the retinoid oil? I usually put it in the last step of my night routine, after moisturizer, since it contains oil. Is that okay? When I applied it before moisturizer, my skin became so dry the next day
I'm using Differin 0.1% adapalene. I think it's the most effective otc retinol/retinoid. But I find it so hard to incorporate other products when using it.
Hi, I watched your video “how to become a cosmetic chemist?”. And I wanted to thank you for this video! It was really calming and informative for future cosmetic chemist babes! 😊💖. I have a follow up question about the skills acquired as a professional cosmetic chemist. Do you learn everything about product formulation & working in the cosmetic industry from school? Or do you learn formulation while working the job? How helpful is a Chemistry degree for the job? Would another degree be better? THANKS BABES 💕✨🎀
Thanks for this video Liah. Congratulations by the way. What can I use for darker dry skin that is not sensitive. I have tried retinol in 1% squalane by TO. It was ok. Then I moved to the granactive emulsion retinoid which I put in the fridge. I love the feel of it. Not sure I see any results. Inkey list will be next up. So I am just basically trying them but finishing the product before I try another. I’m not mixing. Thanks
Can u recommend me something to get rid of my acne I always had clear skin but for the last 3 months my face has been completely destroyed I look absolutely horrible i lost all confidence simple things like going outside stresses me out 😔
I have ezcema so I had to put differin on pause. It said so on the labor so I never used it. Now I am ready to get back in the wagon. I'm worried about my ezcema and the peeling of hypergmentation it may cause
You should always start on a low percentage if you’re new to retinol no matter how old you are. Then you can work your way up to a higher percentage, which will take time so you have to be very patient when using retinol.
