The Super lube pen is a blend of mineral oil, PAO oil, with ptfe powder and is classified as a H1 lubricant meaning for incidental food contact, only up to 10ppm. I would NOT use that on a knife that is going to have direct food contact. You need a H3 lubricant designed for direct food contact like an edible oil (sunflower, soy, corn etc) as long as you don’t have a food allergy. Also, mineral oil or aromatic hydrocarbons (MOAH) are a suspected carcinogen and mutagen like what is used in the super lube pen. On a side note, I think you made another great budget friendly video packed with great content!
@maxlvledc
@maxlvledc Год назад
dammnn! good info. I don't wipe the blades down with the oil..only add to the pivots..I think I made a big mistake not explaining how to actually clean a multitool..I think I need to do that in my next video..
@timh1315
@timh1315 Год назад
@@maxlvledc part of my job at work is being a certified lubrication specialist, so I know a thing or 2 about lube😅. I reviewed their SDS for the pen and they didn’t even list the ingredients they use in it 🤦🏻‍♂️ so I had to do some searching. I think your idea for the next video is brilliant. Heck, I learned so much information about flashlights, batteries, emitters, candela power in your recent videos that blew me away. The flashlight manufacturers don’t even upload videos that go into great depth like that on their products! Keep up the great work Dom!

So what's a good food grade lube?
@maxlvledc
@maxlvledc Год назад
@@DhavalMomaya Olive oil has been used for a very long time for this purpose.
@timh1315
@timh1315 Год назад
@@DhavalMomaya corn oil, sunflower oil, soybean oil, or cottonseed oil are just some examples for keeping a knife protected from rusting just for food prep but keep in mind if you use olive oil, canola oil, coconut oil, those oils do have a shelf life of 12-18 months before they go rancid and they oxidize very quickly. Super lube and many other manufacturers do make lubricants for direct contact so keep in mind you are looking for a lubricant that is H3 certified for direct food contact.

I do my regular maintenance on my Leatherman at the same time as my other “everyday carry” tools. Since I don’t use my Leatherman for food prep I just use the same high quality lube for them all. As for sharpening my knives, I have tried several different types of sharpening systems and I always go back to my wet stones and strop. Nothing gets them sharper and I find it very satisfying getting them razor sharp with just a little vested time and patience.
@Kallys23
@Kallys23 8 месяцев назад
I like where you are going with this. Truly, the Leatherman kit is priced for the name alone. I do agree whole heartedly with you choice of sharpener; that is probably my favorite for packing out/ traveling. Definitely cannot go wrong with that piece of equipment. Many times it would cost more to piece a kit together like this; however, as you have demonstrated, it is clearly more cost effective here. Not to mention this kit is obviously much more useful, I think. Some of us may have collected pieces (picks, brushes, etc) maybe only missing one or two pieces. Or just simply looking around to see how others manage their kits. This was nice to see how you came in better for nearly less.

Dominic - really good look at a "unitized" maintenance kit. I learned about pull sharpeners dangers from that. Have found pipe cleaners VERY useful in kit. They get into a multitool in ways that a Q-Tip won't, & cleaning action is a "pull through" rather than "swabbing" nature. Pipe cleaners can also lightly coat a surface w/lubricant, as they leave more film than droplet (even with "needle" tip oiler.) The softer ones work best. I use the wire wheel on my 6" Craftsman bench grinder to remove rust. Saves manual brushing, and the motor's song is "audio therapy." Even like the winding down sound, and sharp snap of the switch. (Maybe weird, but I bet lots of you relate...) I use a Galati brand medium pouch for a combo gun cleaning/knife sharpening kit, containing several "bore snakes" designed for gun barrels, but also work beautifully for running through a disassembled multitool frame. Of course anyone who's seen my mod work knows that the world might be better off if I didn't attempt multitool mutilations... "Frankenwave." I was heavily influenced by inspector gadget... { :- )

Love the worksharp field sharpener! I would toss in a pair of tweezers or forceps to help aid in reassembly for small spacers and bushings that can tend to be a pain to get back in place. Also, maybe a small bottle of cleaner/degreaser to help get tape residue and similar gunk off of blades or scissors.

The Guided Field Sharpener is the best portable edge maintenance tool out there. I have one in each pack. The cutouts inside under the stones are for installing and removing broad heads from the arrow shaft. I like the small bit kit but would add bits specific to knife/tool screws. Having something to keep the tools rust free like a cloth coated with a conditioner like Tuff Stuff comes in handy around wet conditions.

That looks like a great maintenance kit. One other thing I use from time to time is simple compressed air. Yes, you can try just blowing dust and particles out, but a can of compressed air is going to reach into small spaces much more precisely and powerfully than my breath (plus it avoids getting any spit in my tools). And I usually just use a food grade mineral oil to lube/protect. I buy it by the gallon (I use it for other projects as well) and then fill a small bottle with a fine applicator.
@craigmooring2091

Yeah, after I did that reply to the scambot, I did report it. That looks like a great kit you put together, Dominic. And yes, those V sharpeners are for desperation sharpening, in my opinion. I don't really have a dedicated kit. I lube the joints from time to time and dust the channels with Q-tips. I have a sharpening kit that consists of a leather pouch that houses 2x6-inch diamond plates of 300, 400, and 600 grit. I've adhered 2,000 grit wet/dry sandpaper to the back of one and a strip of leather on another that I rub with green compound when at home. I also have in the pouch a slender vial of aluminum silicate powder, a small triangular file, and a small flat file.

These alternative videos are always nice. People may be able to cobble a kit together from what they already have. I know, for myself, besides the sharpener (a Lansky wont fit 🤣) I could put something very similar together what what I already have. One thing I've been into lately, which you already have videos on, are making my perfect multitool. Modified a Wave, and a sidekick to give me, the right tools for the job. Sidekick good for everyday carry, and still be capable, while the Wave is always in my pocket doing projects.

Haha, i saw the field sharpener and would reccomend this as well, use it more often than my more expensive guided sharpeners. For Oils i use Ballistol for rust resistance (food grade) (also nice for leather strops, cleaning, skincare) and Victorinox Multitool oil as lubricant. Rest is already in the house, wiha bits, microfiber cloth whatever:)

Great info; I never really gave much thought into a knife maintainence kit. I have invested in gun cleaning kits but it makes good sense to care for your blades and multitools as well. One point to add would be to use mineral oil on blades that you would use to process food. It is safer to use the mineral oil instead of petroleum based lube and cleaners when maintaining food prep blades.
@Gman1024
@Gman1024 Год назад
Speaking about knafs, I don't like to take my stuff apart, so I usually spray out my knives with CRC electronics cleaner to remove gunk, and insta-dries with a breath, re-lube with reel oil, then clean the exterior and blade with a spritz or two of mineral oil from an old EDCi bottle, dry and wipe down with a rag.

One thing to note it that if you use a t-shirt as a rag it needs to not have any fabric softener used on it. Fabric softener will interfere with the ability of the rag to absorb other materials. It will also resist some lubricants, so things don’t get as clean as you’d like. Before turning a T-shirt into a rag, run it through the washer with a very bland detergent and do not add fabric softeners to either the wash or dry cycles. This is also true if you are going to use the rags to apply coatings to woodworking projects.

Love the contents of the kit, the only thing I could suggest (more expensive) is Knife pivot Lube with the specified weights, really useful if you're going for a dropshut action on your knife to get their 15 weight lube. Also grease is great for slipjoints and putting it in the enclosure to the omega spring in axis locks make the axis lock smoother and theoretically makes the omega springs last longer because of the minimal friction against the enclosure. Great video!

I cant believe I havent used my old shirts as rags. I even worked briefly in a factory that bought old torn up shirts from the salvation army to use as rags. Thanks!

Good video. I just ordered the Worksharp pocket sharpener and have started looking into knife oil. Yes, I was using the v-shaped knife sharpener until his week.

That's a pretty good comprehensive kit. The only thing I might add but may not necessarily be multitool related is some blue loctite in stick form...I have been eyeing it but still haven't broke down and bought the field sharpener.

honestly everything was pretty great. I might recommend a plastic trim removal tool to separate a knife without marring anything during disassembly. Great video

Awesome kit. Only thing I would add is to double up the most common take down tools (T6-T10) and drivers.

Another great segment matey. We have our own maintainance kit for our knives & multitool almost similar to yours. For brushers we use toothbrush (soft & medium). For sharpening, we use emerine cloth (1000 grit or more). For lubrication & rust proofing we use food grade Singer oil (mostly use for sewing machine). For swabs we just use either Cotton & Wool and last but not least we use Baby Linen Nappies.!! Yeah mum still keep our baby stuff. Dad make a cool pouch for our kit. Needless to say as we reckon you have already guess that the kit is for our bushcraft tool, mainly outdoor usage in the field. We watch you show regularly & got some excellent ideas from it. Cheers for sharing mate. The best giveaway for us is what we takeaway from you shows, an honest review. Warm greetings from Australia.

I was actually cleaning a gerber dime that I won on eBay when your video popped up (weird). I use a v sharpener, q-tips, micro fiber rag, 99% alcohol, old toothbrush, precision scraper and tweezers and mineral oil for lube. Gonna put everything in a case though after seeing your video. Thanks.

Tee shirt seems like a great option for a rag, I suppose if you wanted something on the cheap that wasn't a tee then you can find microfiber rags at the dollar tree for a buck. I like that sharpener and the brush kit a lot and I think I'm going to add those to my Christmas list. Thanks for putting this together and sharing some interesting options!

fantastic vid. leatherman priced me out years ago. especially with so many quality options now ( flissa, multi force, etc. ). sent my favorite surge to oregon 8 weeks ago for warranty repair. i purposely gunked up the pivots to see if they would clean and lubricate. nope. got it back couple days ago repaired but filthy.

Ack! I have one of those v-shaped sharpeners as I'm wanting to learn how to sharpen my knives and thought this was the best way to touch up my blades without ruining them. My uncle would sharpen my knives when I was at home. Have started carrying a larger knife again and have started a small collection since subscribing to yours and Mark Coffman's channels. I figured I needed to learn how to sharpen knives myself. So maybe my first sharpener is not the best start.

dont get me wrong..you can sharpen with a v sharpener..just make sure its exactly perpendicular to the sharpener and dont put any excessive downward pressure. cheers.

I think you put a really good kit together! I would say a lot of these items apply to knives as well not just multitools. In terms of the cloth, i tend to use a microfiber cloth. I have lots laying around and they work great, but an old shirt is perfect too. The field sharpener is the one i have and works great. A while ago i bought a craftsman precision driver set from Lowes i think. It has all the bits you would need, is quite small and was only about $15. Very good kit and so easy to put together your own.
