A slightly longer video where I talk through how I started sewing, and what I learned along the way. I talk about developing my personal me-made style, and moving past preconceptions of what is 'stylish' or 'flattering'. Building my technical skills and confidence with my homemade style.
Plus a couple of pieces of exciting news!!

Enjoyed this video (lying down with migraine so listened to most of it) but had to say that you shifted my mindset re clothes with ease. I am in my 50s & pandemic/menopause weight makes it harder to want to sew. I feel shapeless so I want to sew clothes with shape - however your points about ease and playing with shapes and layer were eye opening. So, as an example, for myself, a looser dress and a waistcoat with darts might be a happy place. And as I have gone grey, my colors have changed quite a lot & that has been an adjustment too. So that section too was interesting. Thank you for sharing ❤️

Hello, so glad you enjoyed the video and found the parts about shapes and positive ease helpful. I've seen more designs that use this over the last couple of years, and I'm really pleased about it. Hope your migraine is better now, they're awful!

Oh my gosh! Subscribed. What you said at 23:00 really resonates with me so deeply- the pressure to wear tight, form fitting outfits which I didn't like much but did anyway to fit in. Still working on unlearning that belief I developed. I'm much older now and I've noticed I'm drawn to loose, boxy, androgynous styles - love ease. I also Knit, Crochet and sew - it's not so easy to find people who have interests in all these crafts, I watch mostly on RU-vid which warms my heart and is encouraging to keep going . I look forward to the announcement of your retreat and the launch of the vest...exciting!

Yes! It took me ages to realise as well, and even now I have to check some of my automatic reactions to positive ease clothes, even though I much prefer them. I think it's all just learned behaviour, but feels great to make that change and feel confident in it 😊 glad you're enjoying the videos! More info on the retreat soon I'm very excited for it! X

Hi Lorna! I recently found your channel and I love it, I wanted to get back into sewing and it’s amazing having so many resources. I also have a grandma who taught me to sew the basics as a kid she even offered me a full set to sew with a sewing machine when I was 8 years old! I’m glad I found your channel, thank you for the effort you put in your videos .

Hey! Welcome and I'm glad you're enjoying the videos ☺️ how lovely of your grandma. I'm meeting more and more people who learned from their Grandmas (more than their parents), it seems to be a tradition! I'm so grateful to have had that time - even if I can't remember everything from then it still leaves an impression with you I think ☺️ I hope you're enjoying getting back into sewing, there are lots of great resources on YT!

Hello Lorna, what a useful video. I have always enjoyed linen to wear and also for making into items for around the home. It is my go to fabric. Layering is such an important part of making good use of the clothes we wear. An item made for the warmer months can be used in winter too if layered with other items. It also makes financial sense to use existing items we have. I have only recently found my own style (I am in my mid 60's) and think in horror of all the items I have bought in the past which did not suit my body shape and ended up in a charity shop! I also love the warm Autumnal colours and love anything berry coloured as it is such a warm shade. Your style is similar to my own taste but you are so slim I am envious 😀. I love that you are going to consider holding a teaching session for others to learn how to make a dress. It is very rewarding showing others how to make something. Thank you for your time with all the videos you make. I always look forward to seeing them.

Hello, thanks for your lovely comment 😊 I'm so pleased you like the videos. I totally agree about using items we already have. It can also be enjoyable to see an older garment in a new way when layering it with other pieces. I also think back in horror to all of the bodycon dresses I bought in my early 20s! It's an evolution though, and it feels lovely when you finally feel like your style reflects how you feel! I'm in love with autumn shades too and can't imagine ever not being now 😊

thanks for the delightful video, I really enjoyed it...sitting here knitting with the cats curled up around me, bliss! what I love best about your style is the philosophy and world view behind it; I can pick up on a fantasy element in the way you dress, maybe even dressing for how you'd like the world to be. And why not?! That all part of the creative process, how we mould our world more into how we would like it to be. Less stress, less pressure and more joy and peace. Lovely. I do like that waistcoat, I've never worn them but am quite intrigued to try and I've always wanted to sew a dress like that. And there's something utterly reassuring about wearing an entire outfit you've made yourself...nothing can touch you, lol. I would be interested in a sewing event/retreat. I'm sure lots of people would be. Go forth with confidence xx

Thanks so much for your lovely message! So glad you enjoyed it. I also absolutely love what you said about dressing for how you want the world to be. That's exactly it. Both in terms of style (living in a fantasy world a little) and in terms of sustainability. That's a really beautiful way of thinking about it, thank you 😊

Workshop retreat sounds so fun!! In my neck of the woods too. Unfortunately I'm due a baby in spring so I think it's unlikely I'll make it 😅 but in another year would love to. Maybe a way to get your vest out there? 'Draft your own?' I would totally come to one on slow stitching practice, especially a residential with an evening of fireside chat and sewing 😊

Ah lovely! Well I'm hoping they'll be a semi regular thing 😊 I'm going to do a quilted version of my vest, so was actually thinking of doing a day of making that, then an evening of hand quilting! I think it's a lovely slow stitching project. The friend I want to host it with has a beautiful old house so I feel like we could definitely look into some fireside stitching in late winter or later in the year if it's popular/ better timing 😊

Hello! I just found your channel and absolutely love your perspective around sewing, creativity and being mindful of resources! I began sewing in 2020 and made 4 garments that were completely terrible but I’m giving it another try! One of the skirts I made I hacked shorter yesterday and hemmed it and it is actually wearable now - so hearing about your past experiences has inspired me to continue. I love every piece you’ve made and more importantly as you say, how versatile each one is. Your waistcoat is beautiful and I think Bilbo is the perfect name for it. Thank you for sharing your lovely work 😊

I found this really interesting and inspiring - I think that the idea of carefully planning things to sew and knit is very sensible - there are too many sewers on youtube who just make masses and masses of clothing - I really don't know when they have time to wear everything they make. I like to take time to complete the things I make. I love the Bilbo waistcoat - the embroidery elevates it and gives it an artisinal feeling. Would definitely be up for coming to a sewing retreat! Off to finish a dress on this wet afternoon - based on a dress I used to wear when I was a student in the 80s!

Hey Judith 😊 thanks so much for your comment. Glad you liked the vest! I'm making plans for the retreat at the moment - in fact I'm meeting someone tomorrow to discuss hosting it 😊 I'll keep you all updated. It can definitely be tempting to keep making all the time, especially with new patterns and fabrics coming out all the time, but I'm trying to retrain myself to focus on well made pieces from good quality fabric.

Love this video. It looks like a number of us are on the journey to sewing clothes that suit us, but are unsure of what does suit us. I look at what I usually wear, but I'd like to make some beautiful linen dresses. I just took up knitting again as well. I would love to see some more beginner patterns. I have been trying to knit or weave up all my hand spun yarn. I would love to make a vest out of some fabric I wove last winter from my hand spun. Baby steps; first the vest pattern. Maybe the one you did. I love your pattern sources, thank you for those. I will definitely look into those. You ought to get some sort of benefit from all your "advertising". Keep up the good work.

Looking at your colour palette, I would love to be able to wear these but being a cool winter they are not my colours. I'm also with you on loving layering and gingham.

On top of that I have a very similar colour scheme as you, maybe with a bit more saturation. I think I’m a ”true autumn” but I haven’t done any real course. The vest is lovely, so special with the high neck, very cozy but also stylish. It would look good with sleeves on too, as a jacket, or as a pinafore. Lots of options! The embroidery is also very cute and special, I get so inspired! The style of the vest reminds me of Scandinavian folk costumes for men.

@@threadandyarn That sounds really nice! Have you seen the lovely wool fleece as an option for the ordinary fleece? I found a fantastic wall tapestry with pinetrees and deer on an offwhite background last week in an antique shop. I’m thinking of turning it into a jacket. It’s not enough for the whole jacket but I think I can combine it with plain offwhite, maybe wool fleece.

@evasaker2476 I've seen sherpa fleece - that sort of thing? I'd love to use that for it, I think it'd be so cosy :) I had this fleece in my cupboard already so have used this for now, but definitely want to try a sherpa one! The tapestry jacket sounds absolutely beautiful!! I'm sure that'd be brilliant with a wool fleece.

Hi Lorna... Lovely vlog yet again. I have a fabric stash which is so precious to me... I've got it on display in my sewing room but I'm loathed to cut into any of it... The reason being I do not know my style yet... I don't want to make mistakes with it.. So I'm at a standstill 🙄 I'm 61 years old and living in Spain. I wondered if you have thoughts on how to balance a love of sewing and learning new things, and preventing an exponentially expanding wardrobe? 😅
@threadandyarn
@threadandyarn 9 месяцев назад
Gosh, it's tricky! I will say I used to buy and produce more. I think a lot of that is part of the learning process, but I wish I'd used more thrifted or second hand materials. I also think taking time over projects (e.g. practising topstitching or toiling) instead of rushing to finish is the most important thing. That way you can still be doing lots of sewing, but making better quality things 😊
@sarabrankaer7796
@sarabrankaer7796 5 месяцев назад
I make a lot of my own clothes and find this a challenge too! I simply enjoy finding beautiful fabric and sewing and trying different things. My strategy is to try and sew more everyday clothes now, rather than only accent pieces and fancy dresses (which I love, but rarely wear). I really look at what I wear for work. I work as a GP and cycle everywhere, so I can't have fluttery sleeves (I honestly don't see how anyone who does their own cooking can wear those anyway), too wide trouser legs, low necklines (I need to be able to bend over my patients without revealing my belly button) and layers help adapt to different temperatures throughout the day. I have now started replacing worn out store bought clothes, sometimes by cutting them up to make "my own" patterns because I know those garments fit me and get used until they're basically rags (I should really phase out garments faster...but I feel wasteful if something is not completely tattered before discarding it) . I sew my own PJs, basic t-shirts and leggings and even started knitting my own cardigans. Throw in the occasional shirt for my husband and costume for my daughter, and some quilts and my hands keep busy and my mind keeps learning without my wardrobe overflowing!
