You have to keep in mind that most people at that time had dental problems. Mushy was the best a lot of people could chew! Also it's possible these were meant to be transported in a backpack then heated over a fire on the road. As an experiment, try heating one up (cooking it) over an open fire to see how it tastes then. ❤️The whole process seems like more of a preservative method because it was basically sterilized. I'm sure they didn't realize that's what they were doing though.

So excited to see the Jamestown green glass pitcher! Jamestown has meant a lot to me in my entire life( I am 67) in Virginia. We now live across the York River directly from Yorktown and a lovely drive away on the Colonial Parkway to Williamsburg and Jamestown. One of my favorite things to visit is the Glass House, the outdoor location of the active glass making of that very green glass. Love going in a chilly day and watching the glassblowing and forming right there , nice way to warm up. Various pieces are available for purchase. We have collected a fair amount of it over the years and now have it on display in our dining room, overlooking the York River. It is such pretty glass and I love the little air bubbles that occur in it . Thank you for your bravery in eating the boiled jelly rolls! 🫣🤗

@EarlyAmerican

To be honest I have NO idea. There is no mention of this anywhere. An issue is it's rolled so there is dough inside of it, while with a dumpling it's only on the outside. So much dough and it's boiled.

the way that that dough is cooked weirds me out so much, HOWEVER, being ukrainian, we do have boiled dumplings and they're insanely good, but they are only boiled for a few minutes and the boiled dough makes sense in that context (and the texture is probably quite a bit different). also, i'm still daydreaming about novympia doing a loving parody video of you guys :D

I can hardly wait for when you bake and compare pumpkin pies from three different eras. BTW - I don't believe in waste, but parsley stems? Good grief! As I don't own farm animals who'd appreciate an extra treat, I compost what veggie scraps I need to discard. This way the discards eventually become fresh, fertile earth.

Here in New Zealand we still celebrate Guy Fawkes. Not as good as 4th of July, no BBQ picnics or anything really. As far as celebrations go it is pretty lame especially now that you can't buy real fireworks anymore, but if sparklers are your thing you'll love it. Back in the days of my mother kids would go door to door like Halloween basically begging for money. Although they haven't done that in my life time.

Yeah, next time either fry or bake them. I’m sure you would like them a whole lot more! The only dough that should be boiled is if you’re making chicken and dumplings. And with that you have so much chicken, butter salt pepper, and other seasonings to make them really tasty.

So, background on a couple things: a) Check Northern French (I want to say, Normandy or Bretagne) legends for the continental French origins of the loup-garou, which may (IIRC) go back as far as the 16th c.; Given the ties between France, Canada, Acadia, and the Delta, it's sometimes possible to trace different story lines from their European origins to their North American landings. (Most involve fur, wantonness, and silver bullets). b) The "boiled pudding" of flour paste goes far back into British culinary history as well: it seems odd to us, but they would have seen nothing wrong with it....I think 16th c. might not be too early for that, either...For a more recent reference, that's what James Harriot referred to in several of his stories about a stolid, silent family of farmers in the Yorkshire Dale's in the 1950s: the short name was "a pud", or a "pudding" and the wife served it first to slow them down before serving the main courses.

I do wonder if a lot of those older recipes actually mean for the things to be suspended by string in a pot over boiling water with a lid covering them. Think more steam puddings cooked in a pudding basin in boiling water. It still gives the look of a boiled item but the texture is way better than boiling in the water.
