How did you miss to say that the first car to reach 100km/h (la jamais contente "never satisfied") in the 19th century was actually electric. Why not use titanium wheels? And cherry on top, the prompter takes a lot off the passion from the subject. Sorry team, I love the channel and this seems a bit overlooked to be honest. He reminds me of Ken Warby and the world water speed record. Sadly Ken passed away of natural causes last year having held the WWS record since 1978 that he set in a boat he designed himself and built in his backyard using a j34 jet engine he bought for scrap metal prices that a couple of guys from the RAAF got running for him. Everyone who has attempted to break his record has died. Watch the youtube video of his run as she dances on the planes. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nloF0eF-zFs.html Scary stuff!

To put all these massive numbers into perspective: at one point, the Bloodhound LSR was going to have a 550 hp Jaguar V8 to act as the fuel pump. The jet they use is so enormous, it needs a 550hp fuel pump. That is how insane it has become to beat this land speed record. They've moved to a massive electric motor now, as that technology has advanced with EV's.
@SimonBauer7
@SimonBauer7 2 месяца назад
the jet engine is used in the eurofighter, the eurofighter uses two of these.
@Yvolve
@Yvolve 2 месяца назад
@@SimonBauer7 The Eurofighter is built completely different. The pump it uses can't be used on the LSR, so they had to find something else. If it did work, they would've used it. No point in developing a new system. The point is that a single engine needs a 550 hp fuel pump, which is insane. Regardless of type or what it is used in.

@tomstech4390

A more interesting fact (if you can comprehend it) is the V8 engines intake air needed to be intercooled... *before* the supercharger. The air pressure beyond mach1 is enough that it would increase the intake temps enough to badly reduce performance, so it would be intercooled (likely air-to-water) then go through the supercharger as normal.

From what I understood from the Thrust SSC team when I watched the record-setting, it had (in addition to its ground-effects design) small retro-type rockets built into the body that would slam the car down on the ground if 'liftoff' was detected at any time. Interestingly, it also had interior baffles built into the frame that were designed to break up and 'shove along' the supersonic shock wave as it passed through the car on its supersonic run. As well, Squadron Leader Green mentioned to us (press & bystanders) that the turbulence/shaking approaching the trans-sonic zone was strong, but once through, It very much smoothed out, and was much easier to control. His tactic to handle this was to get to around 650 or so, then back off for a bit, then PUNCH through the zone. What guts - this is an activity for the few, not me. But it's entertaining as hell, and even inspirational. Finally, FTR, I found Mr. Green to be one of those rare individuals who was nothing but 100.000% positive that it would happen successfully and safely. Kinda reminded me of Dick Rutan (pilot of Voyager, 1st aircraft to circumnavigate Earth in ONE flight.) Thank God for these folks..;)
@Fejmeister6
@Fejmeister6 22 дня назад
A quick relative description of the run: A late-model vehicle will, after a couple minutes or so of pedal-to-the metal acceleration, be going approximately 110 mph/175 kph or so; at that speed, a Formula One car will pass it like it's standing still, because it'll be doing roughly double that speed.. The F1 car at top speed will be passed by a commercial jetliner like IT is standing still, because the jet will be doing double the F1's top.. If the jetliner pilot were to fly low over the SSC run, and look down as he did so, he would see the car easily outstrip him. THAT is some monster speed ;) It can cover 200 + meters in a snap of the fingers! Next time you are driving down the freeway at 77mph/121 kph, count the seconds between regularly-spaced markers (electric/comm. utility poles, mile/distance markers, etc.), then divide that by 10 for a real-time comparison of speeds (top instantaneous SSC speed was reported to be 771 mph/~1200kph). Visually, acceleration from 0-300 mph/480 kph was gradual, to prevent any unforeseen object pick-up (and potential damage), but the acceleration from 300-600 to me was the visual definition of the word 'terrific' - at around 450 or so, it's speed is like nothing you've ever seen on Earth, and it is CONTINUING acceleration! Its ACCELERATION is accelerating! It is at this point that, again to me, its speed approaches the ungodly.. If one were to fire a rifle bullet in the same direction as the car as it entered the timing zone, the car would outrun the bullet! A snap of the fingers is covered distance longer than two football pitches, US or other. ALL THIS WITH REAR-WHEEL STEER!! I couldn't do it..;[] Unforgettable ;) P.S. A blind 'spectator' with us on a low hill overlooking the site took off his shoes & socks, then buried his hands & feet in the loose sand, dirt & gravel ther, & after the run, claimed he could feel the Shockwave through the ground. I find science ALL fascinating..

i love the progression land speed records have had. started with just a car, then progressive performance upgrades, on to a piston engine fighter without wings, to jet fighter without wings, on to fucking multi-stage, could probably make orbit with some tweaks, rockets that you just dont aim up. like at this point they've taken things so far its barely even a land speed record rather an air speed record while still technically touching the ground.

Another great video. Love Rosco's grit and determination. Looks like many of the technical challenges have been researched and understood. Supersonic speeds bring massive challenges, most of which you have covered, and very well. One that will cause many challenges is moving that much earth (or salt depending on the location of the event). Would expect 10kg per second as a starting estimate. That is one of the factors that takes massive power - and understanding that is one of the factors that have prevented success and then ultimately led to understanding of why power levels have to be so very high for these incredible machines. Hats off to you Rosco!!

I'm an engineer and am totally impressed with all the thinking going into this land speed record car. I'm assuming the body is steel because they need the weight to keep it on the ground. The front "emergency brake" would be better mounted behind the center of mass, you do not want the car swapping ends at high speed.

@ZuulGatekeeper
@ZuulGatekeeper 2 месяца назад
No it did't, no speed was recorded because the external radar setup failed to lock on to the car during the run. It's all on video calculations done later say it could not have exceeded 620mph during the run same as how the SSC Tuatara was caught out a few years back after they claimed a run of 331Mph. Further to that mathematical calculations of the car & rocket engine done years later say it had a theatrical top speed of around 630Mph. Only Barrett himself claimed he went supersonic based on his own calculations of internal telemetry claiming 739.666 Mph. No possible way he could have achieved that speed & the video of the run clearly does not support it or shows the car even approaching let alone breaking the barrier. Barrett also refused to show his internal telemetry data or calculations to anyone.

I wonder if another option would be to use a video screen rather than looking out of a windscreen. That way you could position the driver as you'd like and not have to consider if they can see or not. You could also mount the screens to the driver cell such that it would vibrate with the driver possibly improving visibility. You could maybe even opt for a more laid back position, which may be able to give you a smaller frontal area. The hard part I guess would be keeping it low latency.

"La Jamais Contente" was also an electric vehicle. According to historical records it had two 25kW motors, each driving one of the rear wheels with chains, powered by 200 volts worth of wet cells. The chassis was built by Rothschild. Aussie Invader 1 had 6,500lb thrust, not 65,000lb thrust.

Can you please do a video on drivers choosing to run a front steery car vs a rear steery car. Some drivers I've found in sim racing love to have really soft rears and have it steer with the throttle and others like it to be more on the nose and steer with the wheel. Could you discuss this in a video?

The problem that Rosco is facing is the weather at Lake Gairdner its quite unpredictable and when the temperature is correct to run there as it gets very hot there in that part of South Australia it then quite often rains and then thats the end of any chance of racing. The number of times in the last 20 yrs that the DLRA has been able to hold a meeting is very small. Of course there is Lake Eyre where Sir Donald Campbell set the record back in the 1960s, but i don’t know if racing it’s allowed there any more. It would take quite a bit of preparation to race there with a track having to be graded and thats a lot of time to go that distance and width.

Great finds - be worth squaring off an area & using a classifier or garden sieve to see what might turn up. Even digging a test pit could be interesting. The rest of that pot is around there somewhere!! The dogs had fun - my dog enjoyed watching them!

I don’t know much about land speed racing, but I am interested in rockets and I found the information in this video lacking about that system. In case anyone else is in the same boat, here’s some more detail: The engine page on their website says they can’t show specifics due to legal restrictions, but elsewhere they provide plenty. The engine runs on a hypergolic propellant combination, with turpentine as the fuel and (presumably inhibited) white fuming nitric acid as the oxidiser. It’s pressure fed with regulated nitrogen through the piston arrangement shown, with that pressure varying from 750 to 450 psi feed (assuming a typical 20% injector dP that means they’re running ~ 600 psi in the chamber), giving them a throttle range of ~100-60%. The engine is ablatively cooled, and looks to be composed of carbon fiber composite. They also show a picture up the gullet, revealing an injector face with several concentric rings of what appear to be like-impinging doublets, possibly with an outer ring of impinging triplets. Unusually, their injector face does not span the whole chamber and there appears to be just a wide ring of blank metal at the top between the injector and the outer wall of the thrust chamber. WFNA/turpentine is a pretty retro choice, I’d like to know what led them to choose those propellants but afaik they don’t say anywhere.

Thrust SSC was built on the Isle of Wight for the most part, spent most of its time in an airfield hanger. Mechanics always do a lot with what they have, if they're real mechanics.

Our 'quad' engine GTP-X lsr pegs it's speedometer at 600 - 650 mph. Wheels are limiting factor as it enters transitional speeds approaching Mach. It requires 5 times energy on either side of M.8 - M2. It Uses 4 sbc's force fed air and fuel, with each one producing 2,500 mph. 10,000 hp breaks the mach numbers and it is wonderful....

I'd say Art Arfons deserves a mention as well. He was more of the "eccentric in a shed" approach, using found parts (some of which were jet engines). Maybe the underdog, but put up a hell of a fight to Craig Breedlove, who had all the sponsorships.
