I'm an adult beginner violinist. I'm 33 now and I have been playing for 3 years. I remember the first time I touched my violin, I really didn't know anything about the violin. It sounded horrible, but I was so happy!! I had great dreams for my violin and I am very excited with what I've learned so far. This video is a collection of the highlights from the beginning of my violin journey until now after 3 years of learning. I'm mostly self-taught. I use RU-vid tutorials from Heather Broadbent, Todd Ehle (professorV), Zlata Brouwer, Nathan Cole, Eddy Chen, Joy Lee and some others.
A couple of months ago I started with violin lessons through a video exchange program from Artistworks (artistworks.com/CoG). I'm happy that I've had some exchanges with violinist Nathan Cole. And now I have regular video exchanges with violin teacher Richard Amoroso. I like that way of learning very much since it's so personalized, the feedback is great and there are so many lessons in the program! It makes my violin adventure easier and gives me more stability, something I felt I really needed after more than 2 years of learning on my own.
List of highlights from my violin journey as an adult beginner:

I started playing the violin about 6½ weeks ago. I had never even touched a violin in my entire life, and I was so happy and proud of myself for finally taking the step to buy one and start learning. I'm 28 now, so I have a lot of years left to practice hahaha

Thanks so much Otter!! :-) I keep working on improving my tone. It's a constant effort to have nicer tone. And of course the violin and bow do help. Also the rosin is important ;-)
@snake7197
@snake7197 5 лет назад
Great technique! Her bow hold is nearly perfect right from the start. And she uses the whole length of the bow, where it's possible. That makes all the difference in the sound. Too many beginners - especially when they learn on their own - concentrate too much on the left hand. But you produce sound with the right one. That's why bow technique is so important.

Congrats on your excellent progress! I too have been teaching myself violin but mostly Scottish Irish Cape Breton music. I am 62 yrs old and started playing when I was 60. I usually practice at 2 to 3 hours everyday. I don't think it matters how old you are to start if you have a passion to learn how to play any instrument. I love fiddle music but I have a strong desire to learn how to play classical music so I am presently looking for a teacher. I look forward to seeing more of your videos. You are doing amazingly well! 🎻

Hi Darlene, thanks so much for watching my video and for your nice comments! :-) I hope you will find a nice and good teacher. The last months I have been learning with a great violin teacher (be it not in person) through video exchange. And it is really awesome to work with a teacher that you trust and that fits your personality. It makes a huge difference for my playing and I hope to learn much more with him. So I do hope for you that you will also find a teacher that you feel good with. :-) Hope you will keep me posted!

Hello Mariko (love your name, by the way). I’m enjoying the process-getting better at isolating the strings and getting less squeaks. Keep up the great work! I’m 33 and although I’ve had a violin since 2012 and started with self-learning through videos, tutorials, etc. (Christmas carols are nice and easy to work on plus I love Christmas music!), my practice, especially in more recent years, partly due to various reasons, hasn’t been consistent. I finally started real lessons last month and am hoping that will help me progress more and get back into practicing much more consistently. I’m at the stage where I know more than an absolute beginner but am still very much a beginner myself.

@ViolinAdventures
@ViolinAdventures Год назад
@@urwholefamilydied Oh I'm sooo sorry! Please be very careful. My wrist started hurting some time before I created this video, but I ignored it and just kept practicing. I thought the pain would go away, but it only got worse. I had to completely stop playing. After a year, finally the pain was completely gone. But I haven't started again yet. It's still a weak spot and as soon as I play, the pain comes back. I've always had a weak wrist, but I'm pretty sure it's because I didn't have a teacher to correct me that made it worse. I don't want to discourage you. I just want to let you know that this is something to take seriously. If you want to keep playing, I would recommend taking at least a couple of in-person lessons to work specifically on the right posture and what you can do to avoid wrist issues.

Bravo. I don't yet play violin. so have no idea of the challenges you face. I play many brass and woodwind instruments and am learning the piano but I have had my eye on the violin for some time.. It is becoming obvious from the many vids I have watched that intonation is really the biggest challenge you face. I'm not trying to diminish the other challenges for there clearly are many, but from a listeners perspective, that appears to be the main issue.

Don't worry, Audrey. I'm a violist too and learned it when I was in my early 40ies. We hardly ever go as high up with our left hand on the viola as the violinists do. The joke says, that from 3rd position on, you can sell your viola as unused. :-)

This is so cool to see! I just received my violin today, but still find it a bit intimidating, even though I already play flute for 7 years. I find it a bit hard to find videos about learning to play the violin with the help of sheet music instead of only by hearing.
@ViolinAdventures
@ViolinAdventures 5 лет назад
Hi Desiree, thanks so much for commenting. How exciting to start playing the violin!! I had played the clarinet before and also know how to read sheet music. I started with the Suzuki Books. Most people use this method to play be ear but I just followed the sheet music. After studying the first 2 books, which are really easy if you've already learned an other instrument, I started working with etudes books as well. If you would like to learn online in an organized way and with professional feedback, I can recommend artistworks.com with violin teacher Richard Amoroso. I've been in his program now for several months now and I'm learning so much with him! He's really helping me to progress and let me know what to work on to improve. It's a fun way of learning. :-) How are you learning now? Hope you will enjoy learning to play the violin. Good luck!!!

Hi Marikoli! I'm also an adult violin learner (31 years old). I've been playing the violin for 1 year and a half. I've watched many of your videos, and your playing is truly beautiful. Your journey serves as a constant reminder to me of the rewards of hard work. I hope to play like you someday. It seems you're no longer actively playing the violin, please know that you continue to inspire not only me but also countless others. I have no doubt that you will apply the same dedication and effort you demonstrated in your violin journey to whatever activity you choose to pursue. Wishing you happy days always! Hugs! 🥰

Thanks so much for your super kind comment! 😊🙏 You're right, I'm not playing the violin anymore - sadly I injured my left wrist and it hurts when I play the violin... BUT, this month I've started playing the cello. 😍 Since it has a different positioning for me left wrist, playing the cello doesn't hurt. And it's just wonderful and makes me very happy to be able to learn to play another string instrument. Very happy to hear you're learning to play the violin. I hope it's going really well for you and giving you much joy! What are you working on now?

Hi Marikoli! I'm sorry to hear about your wrist, but it's fantastic that you've found joy in learning to play the cello, without feeling any pain. It's a beautiful instrument. Perhaps, one day, you could share a bit of your musical journey with the cello with us! ☺ As for me, I'm currently working on the first movement of Vivaldi's A minor Concerto. It's quite challenging, and I feel it might be a bit above my current skill level. But since it's one of my favorite concertos, I'm fully enjoying the learning process. Best of luck with the cello! 😁

wow this is amazing - I’ve just stumbled across your channel. I am a 17 year old and have been playing the violin for 7 years since I was 11. Like you do, I have several pieces that I’ve taken to festival and got the highest rating six times, at both district and state level - I will be going for my seventh, and possibly eighth this year. anyways, keep it up - you sound amazing - as long as you like your progress and learn, that’s all what matters. 😀

Good morning Mariko Barra, thank you so much!! I believe the piece that me and my teacher picked out for this year is Concerto in G Major, op. 24, first movement by Oscar Reiding... this piece sounds so beautiful. However, I’ve played other pieces like Concerto IV by Joseph Bloch, Swan Lake, and Concerto III by George Perlman. I’m also required to know a lot of three octave scales, and a couple chromatic scales by memory so I’ve already started working on that as well. But I really love your vibrato, your tone is amazing for just the skill you are at... everything is coming along greatly as you progress... if you need more pieces to play, I’ve got some that are my favorite if you’re interested; just let me know. Have a good day!! ❤️

You're doing a fantastic job! One quick thing: Make sure to rotate your left elbow as you play on different strings. When on the A string, your arm can be in its relaxed position. On the D string, you'll want to be able to see just a little bit of it past the violin (so rotate into your right side just a little bit). With the G string, you should be able to see the majority of your left arm. On the E string, you want to tuck it in the opposite direction. That way your fingers are all more easily accessible to use.
@ViolinAdventures
@ViolinAdventures 5 лет назад
Thanks so much for your advice! I will practice this in front of the mirror to see how to move the left arm.

Hi Mariko, your progress is amazing, you're an inspiration for self-taught beginners! I just started myself almost 2 months ago. I like that I'm able to play some tunes, but I'm struggeling with keeping a straight bow and intonation. I checked out your beginner video's and it seems like you didn't struggle with this as much. Did the Suzuki book taught you this?
@ViolinAdventures
@ViolinAdventures 3 года назад
Hi Chriscilia, I did actually struggle with keeping a straight bow. In the beginning I used a tool to help my bow go straight. What also helped was starting my practice sessions with long slow bow strokes, completely focusing on straight bowing and nice sound. There's some good videos that show you how to move your arms to make bowing straight easier. At first it takes very focused work but after some time it get's easier! You'll get there! As for the intonation it helped that I had played other instruments before, so from day 1 I was pretty focused on correcting my finger positions to make the notes as in tune as possible to my ability. Just keep practicing patiently and you'll get there! Good luck to you!

:-) Thanks so much!! Well, the past2 months I haven't been able to practice :-(( I'm stuck with tendonitis in my left wrist. I had been playing with pain in my left wrist for a couple of weeks and that wasn't smart. I though the pain would go away on it's own but it just got worse... until I couldn't play anymore. So now I'm taking a complete break until my wrist will be completely healed. I hope to be starting again in a week or so, but it will be just for a couple of minutes per day because I don't want to hurt myself again. But ultimately my goal is to get back to where I was. I was playing everyday for at least an hour. And how are you doing?
