My practical and easy two step approach to loudspeaker placement, the long version (English and Dutch subtitles - Nederlands ondertiteld). If you're a novice, I'll advise you to watch the short version first at • 002 Loudspeaker placem... . The step by step instructions contain explanations on why you have to take these steps. You can also read read the article at thehbproject.com/en/articles/3... or watch the short version of the video at • 002 Loudspeaker placem... . And please do leave comments below if things are not clear; I love to learn from you what can be improved in the video.

The biggest problems with some of the you tubers is, that it's often from a professional standpoint, were you have to spend crazy amounts of money to get your room "fixed", and as Hans points out here, it could lead to a divorce ;-) Therefor this vd is very informativ :-)

Great video. One more point regarding fully dampened rooms not being ideal to listen to what the music production team had in mind: let's not forget that mixes are done in studio rooms that also have some reverb and early reflections. Yes, studios are well treated acoustically to be as neutral as possible but it doesn't mean they are not live. Therefore you are right in saying that too much dampening is not advisable.

Do I leave it on its position or unplug it? And does it affect in my seating position is lena on back wall? I don't have Facebook or google + so I apologize for asking questions this way. Thank you.

With so much misinformation out there, it is great to hear someone explain room acoustics accurately and in an easy to understand way. His explanation, including visuals, of room modes is better than I have ever been able to explain to clients. One suggestion, for those creating a room for audio reproduction, not only should the room proportions not be multiples of each other, but the construction of each wall/floor/ceiling system should be such that they do not resonate at the same frequency.

Helpful - thank you. Might be even more helpful to subscribers to also cover the potential advantages of 45 degree toe-in: 1. Greatly widens the sweet spot for outstanding sound staging - you don't have to worry so much about sitting exactly in the middle - very useful for multiple listeners or when you are moving about the room while listening too; [As you move to the left you are closer to the left speaker but more off-axis, and further from the right speaker but more on-axis] 2. Can help reduce or virtually eliminate early reflection problems from side walls, (depending on the room of course); 3. Can reduce treble without having to resort to tone controls, which can be a very good thing when using resolving sound systems (such as high-end studio monitor / dac combinations). If you haven't done so, try it!

Another excellent and articulate video. Clear and to the point with out being over technical. I wish I had access to this type of concise and accurate advice when I started getting into audio in the early 80s. I don’t have the luxury of a dedicated listening room. My hifi rig has to fight for it’s right to be in our family lounge. The lounge is far from ideal. 21 feet long, 18 feet wide and 7.5 high. It has plasterboard walls, a concrete ceiling separating it from the apartment above. A wood clad concrete floor, built on block and beam work as it is ground floor. One of the long walls is all windows from above 3 feet from the ground. It is ‘open plan’ so my 8 feet wide, 14 feet long kitchen, makes the room L-shaped! Ive absolutely no acoustic room treatment, other than a large, plush rug placed in front of and between my large floor standers. With much hard earned cash, time, experimentation, trial and error and powers of heated persuasion to get the long suffering wife on side, I have now built a premium quality rig, which despite room acoustic issues, does for the most part reproduce music the way I prefer to hear it. Over the years, I’ve upgraded components, cables, speakers Etc. Piece by piece and appreciated the sonic differences they’ve made, be it good or bad. However, I’ve recently made one change which has totally killed the ambiance of the room. I replaced our old leather 3 and 2 seater sofas for a slightly smaller, lighter 3 and 2 seater fabric sofas. Listening to music is now, well, far more intimate. My normal listening level is around 78db. I used to be able to achieve this by turning the volume control to 11 o’clock, I now have to turn it to 1 o’clock for the same results. I’m not sure that I’m happy with this new sonic intimacy. I guess I will learn to be happy with it as these sofas are here for the long hall. I have 2 subs, placed along the same horizontal line as my floor standers. I’ve now introduced a 3rd, down firing sub which I’ve placed centrally between my floor standers and in front of the opposite wall. I’ve had to experiment and reduce the intensity level on all 3 subs, but I have now achieved a more open and ambient reproduction. I have contemplated, costly professional room treatment, but I know that would push the wife to contemplate divorce, or murder. So it’s a case of minimising the compromises/concessions and maximising/appreciating the benefits/alternatives. Keep up the excellent videos Hans.

Hans, I have been listening to 2 chl sound for a long time. Cardas has provided a placement table where data is entered (HxWxL) and a starting measurement is spit out. If room is rectangular move speakers 1/2" at a time (you can use one channel) until bass increases and then transitions to out of phase. I liked your floor crawl to find starting point. Since midrange and highs are in the signal correct phasing can be detected. With very small movements shift speakers to brightest sound while maintaining phase. I sit in listening chair moving toward and away from speaker listening for image to shift. If it does not that is almost your spot. Nudge speaker so sound "image moves behind the speaker. Measure distance to rear wall. Cut piece of pvc pipe and trim so it is a slip fit between rear wall & closest portion of speaker back. Using same distance from side wall position second speaker same distance to back wall. Give a listen seated as you would listen. Walk the center line to the back wall. Any movement of sound R to L indicates sound lobes along center line. Go through the procedure again. changing speaker to back wall distance. When properly set there is no lobing along the center line, The sound stage will be behind the speakers on a 3D stage and looking at each instrument will not shift its position. Takes a while but when you dial it in you will have an acoustic holograph and the speakers magically disappear. Hans technique with the mirrors on side wall indicate prime reflection. I make diffuser panels with odd lengths of wood glued to panels hung over those location. These panels can be painted, stained, whatever you like to make them blend in or stand out. You could make a wire frame with speaker grill cloth attached to the panels to visually hide them. I use 2x2 & 2x4 doug fir from 1.5" to 3.5" sliced to random lengths. Panel can get heavy so support well. Hans is the king so take his advice. I have had great success with my approach as well.

Particularly good video. I have seen a similar set up called the "Master Set" here in Colorado, USA, which works very well. Also, I built a new house and constructed my listening room with dimensions in ratios of phi ᵩ (~1.618:1) to maximize spacing between standing waves. My room is approximately 3 meters high 5 meters wide and 8 meters long. I also have absorbers in the side first reflection points and a throw rug (with double carpet pad) on the floor to absorb the floor bounce. The sound is amazing, especially considering my relatively inexpensive equipment.

Very interesting theory's on acoustic solutions and I did like the video i have seen and listened to so many people's ideas and solutions to this the room set p it's hard to know what's right what's wrong, and yours to offered some good ideas but still it seems are vague, so I shall continue on my quest for creating the perfect listening area and environment , but thanks for sharing your eloquent thoughts and solutions , best wishes Steve Henderson, Grooveline recorders UK,
@TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel
@TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel 9 лет назад
Steve Henderson Hi Steve, from your signature I gather you're talking about a control room setup. That's quite different from a listening room for the consumer. The intention of this video is to help the unexperienced consumer set up his/her stereo in a 'normal' living room, which is a room that acoustically is pleasant to be in. If you own a modern house with a living that has glass from top to floor on three sides, my approach will absolutely not work (what will?). But if you have a living that is normally furnished, it does. A control room has other needs than a living room, although here there are many 'religions'....

I recently began work to create a home studio and have been trawling the web to better educate myself on acoustics etc. Your videos are exceptional, I'm surprised to find myself digesting such 'abstract' technical/mathematical information on the first play-through. I'd only request that you do more 'general' educational videos on the science of sound, such as this one... Your pace and clarity in writing and presenting makes light work of these very demanding subjects, a rare thing. If a specific suggestion is more useful... A video going into more detail on sound absorption and reflection techniques perhaps? ...You touch on the subject here, I'd like to hear more on those improvised methods from the 80's. :-) Subbed and shared ...and thanks.

You're most kind. Please realize that this channel is aimed at people that want to get back to proper stereo reproduction in the home. Of course, you can use my method for the control room but I do not intend to make videos on the subjects you suggested. At least not for a long time. Apart from that: studio acoustics is a subject even professionals disagree on between them. There are several 'religions' but in the end it is not the 'religion' but the way it is carried out.

Please do consider the mod I suggested in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-L83EEDbAMJI.html. It does make a big difference.

One of the simple and easy understanding video. Most of the cases,all talking about BOX room,which means it has symmetrical side walls but here in our city,most of us having a living room like 14 feet wide and deep 12 feet,one side window,one side to dinning room most of audiophiles here can only place the speakers on the 14 feet side. Do you have any suggestion in acoustic treatment in this type of room ? Thank you in advance as I'm going to move into a new home with 23 ft wide and 15 ft deep and have no choice but to put speakers on the 23 ft side (the rear wall of speakers only has 13 ft).

Excellent RU-vid Hans! Last year I moved my music audio system down from our 13' x 24' living room to a 24' x26' (plus alcove) "man cave", while upgrading most of the equipment, including a new set of speakers. I got the speakers really "dialed in" to the room, sounded just great....until I added a pair of sub woofers. The resonances of this "man cave" were such that bass sounds lacked all "definition". With the help of the Room EQ Wizard software and a calibration microphone, I was able to combine the addition of bass traps with repositioning of the speakers and sub woofers, to dramatically improve not only the low bass sounds, but the mids and highs, and the stereo "sound stage". Maybe in a future RU-vid you could provide guidance on the tuning of sub woofers and rooms!

+Evan Rosenberg I never came to think of placing the sub was a problem since it's really simple. Use the same trick as used for the low end of normal speakers: place a sub on the listening position, play music with percussive bass and start listening through the room. Usually halfway a wall is the best while in the corner will produce the loudest bass. If halfway the wall doesn't work, try one third (but never a quarter). If you have two subs, place them opposite each other (to start with).

+The Hans Beekhuyzen Channel PS: don't spend too much time on software trying to solve placing. I know a number of acousticians and they all say the same when asked in private: software is good for a rough estimate, although they could do an equal good rough estimate by head. The second function is to use the nice graphs as sales tool:-). I even know a guy that has all the installers and home theatre 'Diploms' and visits you with impressive software but doesn't have a clue!

+The Hans Beekhuyzen Channel With my particular room, before I added bass traps, the only way I could get the "boominess" out of the room was to place the subs behind the listening position, in roughly the middle of the room. But the "visceral" experience was all "confused" in the bass region, where a musician playing a bass would appear to be playing in front of me, but as they moved down in the registers, that moved around the room. Once I got the bass traps positioned correctly, I placed them flanking the main speakers and the "viscerals" are just fine now.

+The Hans Beekhuyzen Channel My subs have microphones and built in EQ to match them to the room, but with an SPL meter, I had the volume turned up just a bit too loud. Once I got REW working, it helped me tailor the frequency & volume on the subs. My system now doesn't sound like it has sub woofers, which I feel is a "good thing"....now once you disconnect the subs, they are greatly missed!
