Working through my lock-down backlog of clock repairs. Thought you would like to see how I approach the treatment of this early twentieth century home made cock based on the Hips-toggle principle.
Hi Matt Thanks for the comment. I will get back to this project soon. Moved house and other things gotten in the way but thanks for the encouragement. Matthew
Are there any further videos about the Hipp Toggle clock referring to setting up, fine tuning especially if the distances of the toggle to the contact spring etc..
Not a professional clock maker but I decided to build a scratch built hipp clock of my own design in the 1980's with skeleton visible movement with hour strike. It keeps good time given that the power source is 4 alkaline torch cells giving a life of eighteen months. Just looking at your clock there looks to be a necessary part missing the capacitor across the switch acting as a spark quench, without it the contacts will pit and burn extremely quickly. pity you can not contact me for help.
Wow! I don't suppose you are anywhere near Bedford are you? I have one of these clocks built by my grandfather which has lost accuracy and finally given up completely. I am desperate for someone to fix it…
@@jennijackson2568 H Jenni sorry I live in Cheshire. Though I can give you some information to start your quest, If the clock was built by your grand farther he probably used the project how to make a Hipp Electric clock from the periodical Mechanics or the Practical Electrical from the late 1840s or 50s it gibes a blow by blow hoe to make the clock but also how to get it working. We had one of these clocks in my senior school made by the physics teacher. This clock was the seed that was in my mind many years later.
@@jas20per Hi - thank you so much for that really useful info! I think I’ll have to start a personal learning programme to see if I can fix the thing myself - not something I expected to have to do in my 70s but hey! It doesn’t look as though I’m going to be able to afford to get anyone else to fix it! Either that or I’ll have to leave it to my sons to sort once I fall off my perch…
