Decades of guiding experience provide real hunting experiences which help to form opinions on favorite guns, ammo and practices. There is plenty of back and forth banter about the subjects listed as Hal Joe & Lee trade client stories as well as personal experiences. We invite you to provide feedback at this link: www.bigwoodsbucks.com/Contact. The BWB Hunting Club has in-depth articles, short films and technical tips but equally important is the member forum which gives you the opportunity to talk about deer hunting amongst yourself or engage with Hal or our team member. - Join Today

The popularity of the Remington 760/7600 in the northeast can be attributed in some degree to the Benoit family.

Great talk. I've gotten one buck up in the North Maine Woods, he wasn't big, but he was my first deer. I gotta call it a lucky shot knowing what you guys go through. I'm playing the moose tag lottery this year in district 1 and 2, but we're going up in November for deer anyway. Once you've walked in the big woods, you're pretty much hooked.

Hay fellows, here’s a story for you. My brother in law and I watched a hunter standing close to us on a mountain road empty his 30-30 lever action rifle on to the road without ever pulling the trigger when shooting at a deer running across a open field. However, every time he levered the rifle he said BANG ! There was not one empty 30-30 round lying on the road. We just stood there in amazement.👍🇺🇸✌🏻

I’m with Lee on this one. A good quality 2x7 with see through mounts. Keep it on 2 power at all times. Then you are ready for them quick close shots. You usually have time to dial it up for a long shot. See through scope covers are a must too, don’t get the solid black ones you can’t see through.

Great podcast! I grew up in the South hunting from a stand with a bolt action. But I live in New England now and last month I was invited to a friend’s camp near Rangeley… and now I’m hooked! Didn’t see a deer but carried my ol faithful Model 70 Featherweight in .270 with Leupold 3-9x40. It’s a joy to carry and fits me great, but I next season I want to carry something shorter and faster. I have an old Marlin 336 30-30 that was a late cousins rifle. I have a skinner peep and Vari-X III 1.5-5x20 with low mounts. Going to practice a lot this summer and decide what I like best. About halfway thru Hal’s book and have Larry Benoit’s book next. Already thinking about next Nov!

I’ve used my760 308 carbine since 77when I retired my 1893 30-30 Marlin the 760 is my bad weather rifle never fails I moved into a 7400 30-06 carbine both Remingtons have a quick sling of my own design every night after hunting I take the air nozzle an blow the debris out an rub down with a light gun oil rag. Keep your semi autos clean your not going to have a problem, the sling is for traveling an the rifle is in your hands when tracking an still hunting never on your shoulder!an definitely shoot them into the ground!!!

My go-to gun is a 7600 in .280 Remington I bought brand new in 1985(?) I cut down to carbine length with a Leupold Vari-X III 1.5 to 5X. I use Federal 150 grain Power-Shok bullets in it. My real nasty weather gun is a 760 in .30-06 Springfield cut down to carbine length. It has a William's peep sight on it. I use 180 grain round nose Core-Lokts in it. Unlike Hal, my scoped gun is the one I've shot all my deer with; I've never shot one with the 760. I used to run the William's peep on my 7600 before I cut it down and shot several deer with it, but it now wears the Leupold. In Mass I use an 870 pump (you have to use a shotgun in Mass) with a fully rifled barrel, in 20 gage with a Leupold 1-4x Vari-X II. I also have a Remington .22 pump action rifle with a 1-4X scope on it. All my deer guns are almost identical as far as action, safeties, scopes, length of pull, etc. The .22 is great for practice since it's so cheap to shoot. I actually take it out to the range and shoot at clay flyers tossed from a mechanical thrower. I set it so it throws them low and of course with a safe backstop. I like to do this with snow on the ground. You'd be surprised how many you can hit after a while and with the snow you can see how close you get when you miss. Lots of fun.

Just picked up a 760 game master from 1954 pretty much brand new. Getting new fiber optic sights on it and some trigger work done to it. Can’t wait to take it out next season!

It's so funny listening to you fellows talk I'm from Vermont always used a Remington 760 game master the 308 Sense I was 13 , 25 years later I have retired that and use a 7600 -06 Or my new 7600 35 Whalen! But I have always shot 180 green Remington core Lokt And out of my 308 they have always demolished everything I have hit no matter where I hit it!

Lee's story about the firing pin freezing up also happened to me with a Remington 870 Slug gun. I saw a buck, aimed, pulled the trigger, nothing happened! Thinking that I had forgot to chamber a shell, I open the bolt, there was a shell, upon closing the bolt the shotgun went off! Scary situation!

for scopes, and i have hunted alot of nasty weather, i use the spray antifog cleaner for eye glasses, its not perfect but helps alittle to keep the fogging problem down. also i cut a scope cover from a old innertube just big enough to cover scope lens, like a big rubber band, and take it off when needed, like when you get the feeling your getting close. helps keep snow, rain, off lens. also lens dont fog so much. also you could use it as a fire start. i have small strips of inner tube for fire start. be carful when its burning, that rubber dosent drip on you. hope this helps someone, good day paul

You mentioned that you didn't know of any other round nose rounds being made other then the Core Lokt. I believe Hornady makes a 180gr Round nose.
