Its wonderful to watch and listen to a knowledgeable and experienced woodworker. Some things we already know, some we don't, but reiterating all of the basic principles, purposes and setting up of a tool and its components always has timeless value. Thank you Graham.

Mr. Blackburn I have your book "Traditional Woodworking Handtools" which is beautifully illustrated. It hooked me into the handtool world 20 plus years ago. I am thrilled you have a RU-vid channel. I wish you every success in this new media.

I am a want-to-be luthier who is trying to figure out how to get started and how to build my own tools. I have already restored three smoothing planes that I picked up at garage sales. I have a steel plate that I have flattened. I took it and lapping compound to flatten the soles on all of my planes. I also use my steel plate to flatten my sharpening stones. My next project is to Roubo style frame saw to resaw wood. After that I am going to try to build finger planes

Excellent video, long time hand plane user but really appreciate that you are documenting these step. When I first started in the 90’s I’d have to track down Fine Woodworking magazines to learn and intemperate this information. Again, thank you for taking the time.

I’m having an issue with my number six Stanley. I got a new set of Hock blades properly sharpened with the backs flattened to a mirror polish and the chipbreaker adjusted to approximately 1/32 or less from the edge of the iron. I suspect that I might have too much pressure on the cap iron but I’m not sure. Somehow I’m still getting shavings compacted between the iron and the chipbreaker, but it’s from hard maple and Osage Orange only, not from hardwoods. I don’t appear to have any chatter. Does this sound like an issue arising from the tension or lack thereof on the lever cap? Edit - do you happen to know if the lever cap on a number six is the same width as a lever cap on a number five even though the blade is a quarter inch or whatever wider? Or 3/8 wider

Thanks for what you do. As a matter of curiosity, have you any experience with the Veritas custom plane? It appears to have some significant innovations, and those who use it seem to really like it.
