We’ve all heard that ‘war is hell’ but this week we hear it from a different perspective: that of a young pilot, new to the fleet and the F/A-18 Hornet, who finds himself fighting far from home in the fog of war, on the heels of the death of a beloved squadron mate.
Climb aboard as retired US Navy Captain Nick “Mongo” Mongillo tells the harrowing story of his downing an Iraqi MiG-21 on day one of Desert Storm. Live the experience as you hear the actual in-flight audio, then dissect it to learn what each call meant then, and how times have changed now.

Great talk, the combat audio clip makes it very evident how far air-to-air employment has evolved since the 1991 GW. Mongo's assessment at 1:13:25 that it "takes war, death and combat to move the needle" still so true.

What an awesome story. Humility along with a Silver Star. My Uncle Pete earned a Silver Star during Operation Torch under General Patton as a Tank Commander in No. Africa while his brother was a nose gunner on a B24 I never knew that my Uncle Pete earned a Silver Star until after his death from old age when my cousin showed it to me. That's the kind of heroes we had saving us and our country in past wars. Whenever I spoke with my uncles, they never discussed WWII with me. I once spoke to my uncle Sal, also a Tanker, and asked: "Uncle Sal, why didn't you guys ever talk about the war?" His answer was "why would we?" War was hell and the Greatest Generation never wanted to discuss it with their kids. This was a great story. It seems war heroes live on from generation to generation because they love their country. Thank God for our heroes.

Another thing I find interesting is the humanity expressed regarding respect for life from pilots who have distance and mechanized separation between them and their uniformed opponents. When I hear Mongo express his compassion and sanctity of human life, I'm convinced that it is genuine. From the Land Forces Component elements who actively look for opportunities to engage the enemy during GWOT, there's a different perspective on the enemy over the past 20 years. When you see the depraved savagery of most of the people we've been fighting, or even some of the Fedayeen Saddam loyalists in OIF 1, everyone I know personally who stacked their corpses like cordwood sleeps peacefully at night with that knowledge, disturbances only coming from losing guys on our end. A big factor in that is the collective psychology of our civilians being attacked, as well as the utter casual contempt for human life these diseased animals show to their own kind. The dichotomy of a pilot respecting the life of another pilot vs a dismounted combat arms soldier placing his reticle on the head or chest of one of these wretched organisms couldn't be more stark, and is opposite of what logic would suggest in the intimacy of brutal, face-to-face aggression. It's the exact opposite of what I read in "On Killing".

I have recently discovered your channel and whenever I get the time to fully concentrate and listen to your podcasts I do. I have also been very positively surprised of your communication with us viewers and the whole channel is perfect for me. Though, I do have to address Mongo's comment at 27:00 where he says ''peaceful military nations like us''... Sorry to bring this to the comments, but you guys talk a lot about it in the video and I just need to point out to you that this is like a finger to the eye for all of us who have had the chance to experience that ''peace''. Also probably to a lot of other nations that got to watch it. Personally I agree with almost everything Mongo and you say about war and I realize that you are Americans, but nothing about those kind of international interventions is peaceful and can be a real triggering for some of us when we hear something like that. All that aside I love your channel, as a guy who decided not to go ahead and try to be a fighter pilot (all the indicators back then were that the Serbian air force was going to die out) I get to live it out through your stories and stories of your guests. Especially love all the international guests as we get to listen about non-US fighter planes too and get to see how other smaller air forces manage. Would be great if in the future we got some Japanese, Korean, Israeli, Chinese and especially Serbian pilots (maybe even some brave guys who flew in '99, I believe it would be interesting for the viewers to hear what they have to say, also some US pilots that flew in '99). Sorry for the long post, and the small rant, love your channel and keep it up!

This episode never gets old. So many lessons learned... Hey Jello. I was reading the account of a USAF AWACS crew member recently of those events. He said he was watching as some Tomcats flying CAP working with E-2s had some delays in comms/PID from the E-2, and one of the Cats was locked up on some A-6Es before the E-2 could deconflict. The E-3A Sentry crew said he cut in to tell him that was an A-6, right as the Tomcat called Fox 1 IIRC. Have you heard about this and was that a factor in putting the Cats on a tight leash throughout the rest of the War?
