@@shamilanaveed9885 Hi Shamila, I live in the Inner West and hence was pretty new to all roads in Blacktown. Never did any practice in Blacktown routes just booked the available slot, went and took the test. Jimbo’s videos were my saviour. I would recommend watching his videos multiple times, practice head checks, 5 seconds indicator, paying attention to hazards and most importantly be calm and collected and don’t panic. All the Best!!

Hi Vaishali sorry to hear that you had problem today at Silverwater. Without meaning to take sides I believe they do mention in the booking confirmation email their expectations with road worthiness of the car you bring which includes tyres. Go back and have a read of it and let me know. Not much you can do but rebook and replace the relevant tyres. Also make sure all signal and brake lights work.

Hey Jimbo, does it matter what order you do your head check in regards to your normal checking to see if there's any traffic before turning? Say if I'm turning left onto a street I obviously need to make sure I'm checking that there's no cars coming before pulling out and if I'm doing a left head check too, should the left head check be before or after my normal front view checking? Do the testing officers care what order you doing things like that in?
@chloehannan6287
@chloehannan6287 2 года назад
Hi Jimbo, my instructor is getting me to do the left headcheck before exiting roundabouts and I told him about this but he said he knew nothing about it and dismissed me. I find it really off putting to my positioning and looking ahead at what I'm entering as I exit the roundabout along with indicating off and being in a manual aswell it's pretty hard because there's alot going on. He got me to do this even on roundabouts with 1 lane. 😐
@thedrivingtestguynsw8424
@thedrivingtestguynsw8424 2 года назад
Hello Chloe my opinion on this check is to do it on very large multi lane roundabouts. It's more of a pain of smaller 2 lane roundabouts and single lane. Certainly check the left side as you enter the roundabout but this doesn't need to be a left blindspot check within the roundabout. Testing officers do NOT mark this check.

Because I've lived and driven in a rural area for decades, my town/city driving skills may not be text book. Hi Andrew it's really your choice. It wouldnt hurt getting some training now and you can get your self prepared. Maybe just a few lessons now and see how you go. You won't need to do Manoeuvers on your test. Also instead of doing a test at Service NSW you can arrange an accredited instructor to do your assessment instead which is less stressful.

Hi Shei the5 second signal is for leaving the kerb not lane changing. To signal sufficiently for lane changing in prefer a min of 3 flashes. Quick question. How far in advance should you be in the proper lane for a turn? I know I shouldn't be in the right lane on a highway, unless overtaking or turning right... Issue is that during the test route, when I turn onto the highway I land in the right lane... It's almost 5 minutes down the highway before I need to make a right turn. Should I get into the left lane when I get onto the highway, then move to the right lane later on, when I'm closer to the turn off?
@thedrivingtestguynsw8424
@thedrivingtestguynsw8424 3 года назад
Hi Graceful. Yes very good question. You can do either. There are pros and cons. If you move into the left lane you may find it hard to get back in the right hand lane. If the speed limit is 80 or less you can legally stay in the right lane. You can get harassed a bit by other drivers if you stay in the right hand lane. I've tried both versions on lessons and have less probs getting the student to stay in the right hand lane but stay right on the speed limit. It's your choice. If the speed limit is over 80km then you have to move into the left lane.

Hi Batchaaus. It depends which head check The blindspot headcheck its usually looking out the rear side windows , although in some cars you can see the right side blind spot through your drivers front side window. The head movement needs to be chin to shoulder. The traffic light check is side to side through the front windscreen and side front windows.

Hi Jimbo in your 3rd diagram, supposed the leftmost lane is a bicycle lane, do you have to enter to turn from it? The rule said you may enter so it means to me it's just optional. So can you turn left from your current lane without crossing bike lane? Similar to how you turn with the edge line on photo 2😊
@thedrivingtestguynsw8424
@thedrivingtestguynsw8424 5 месяцев назад
Hi Bob the testing officers manual doesn't specifically mention you must move into the bike lane with the broken line section but I think it's implied. For example if that section was a bus lane then you must move into the bus lane to turn left. The other issue is, that if you don't then someone else may and they may prevent you from turning. I recommend that you move into the bike lane after check left blind spot. It's you choice.

FYI the van has a special mirror on the left side with a pole that places the mirror further out. Hey Jimbo, thanks for clarifying this with the diagrams. It's very useful. It seems ridiculous that the publication A Guide to the Driving Test conflicts with the examiner's testing manual. 2 things: 1) I'm sure different examiners may have different opinions on what constitutes a car width. e.g in the diagram at 3.33 if the car was closer to the middle, there may be enough room for a small car to come up the left. Yes I realise this could also be a road positioning error as you should keep left when turning left, however I imagine it could also lead to a head check error in that scenario. 2) in the diagram with the right turn, you mention when 'there is no island', are you thereby implying a headcheck is required when there is an island? To sum up, do you not agree that it's probably a good idea to advise your students to always check in either direction when turning? One reason being because of potential ambiguity, the other reason being developing the habit (e.g I note in your video about roundabouts you say students should always left signal when exiting a roundabout, including single lane ones which isn't required in the test). The logic being human habits... do it always and therefore you won't forget, when it's actually required and marked in the test. Thanks for reading my long-winded reply!
@thedrivingtestguynsw8424
@thedrivingtestguynsw8424 3 года назад
Hi Sean thank you for your thoughtful post. Yes there definitely are different levels of marking between examiners but i would hope as the test routes are static they have all agreed which ones need left head checks and ones that dont. In my opinion its usually the unusually wider laned roads that need it. Yes i mentioned "no island" because if it was a painted island, you would need to right head check. With a raised concrete median strip you wouldn't need it. But here is the problem with confusing the diverging part and the turning part. The diverge around the painted island isnt the "turn" its a standard diverge that always needs a head check regardless of turning. The "turn" is the part done after the diverge and if you are close to the centre then examiner wont mark a right head check even though the green book says to do it. Finally in relation to head checking every turn in comparison to left signal out of each roundabout to build habit. Its my simply my choice to teach signalling each round about because this signal is just a silly token thing that is marked. At the end of the day if you are a safe driver you dont trust these exit signals to judge when to exit. Also there are far fewer roundabouts to get this habit in relation to the amount of turns you do. I dont teach students to head check each turn because it just becomes a silly head movement tic prgrammed in and the student doesnt really look. I prefer for the student to actually assess each turn to see if there is potential for something to be there and actually check. Thanks Sean and please keep posting your thoughts.

@@thedrivingtestguynsw8424 Thanks very much for the detailed response Jimbo, much appreciated. The main point about all this is that it seems to highlight some inconsistencies in the industry particularly around what their publications reflect and what the examiners are meant to check.

@@seano2176 Yes there seems to be. Also between examiners. I witnessed a test of mine pull out from the parking bay at Gregory Hills the other day and clearly signal less than 5 seconds not even close. Please give me tips for right shoulder head check. I found its difficult as my car turn during right head check😢.

Practice will get you better at this. After the hundredth go you should be able to hold the steering straight while checking over your right shoulder.

the guy from my safer drivers course said that we should indicate 30-40 metres before a turn? Is that a rule? i feel like its a bit too late

@thedrivingtestguynsw8424 3 года назад
Hi Anthony there is no official distance marked for signalling prior to turn. It's just says to signal sufficiently without confusing other traffic. (In NSW)

They don't mark that if they did then alot more people would fail.

@@thedrivingtestguynsw8424 thanks!! Will I be disqualified if I let my hands off the steering wheel while I'm at a red light? I always tend to do that without my realisation and my dad hammers me about it
@thedrivingtestguynsw8424
@thedrivingtestguynsw8424 3 года назад
Hi Angela I generally encourage you to keep your hands on the wheel even stopped at lights. However the NSW testing manual only gives an F8 fail for not holding the wheel while the car is moving. So what you are doing won't be a problem on your test.

@@thedrivingtestguynsw8424 awesome! Thanks for answering. Also, does a driving test must have a set of traffic lights to be assessed because the area i live does not have traffic lights.
