In 1982, energy showrooms were still popular and LEB had theirs at the top end of Barkingside High Street. Electric stoves, heaters and fridges could be purchased at such showrooms, and energy bills could also be paid. In a nod to the past, a bungalow sat at No. 171, surrounded by commercial units and pavement bustle. Ilford Historical Society's newsletter of April 2019 (downloadable here: t.co/XJevwPKLku?amp=1) has a detailed history of the bungalow and the electricity showroom building.
Kentucky Fried Chicken was a major food franchise on the high street, one of the newer American style restaurant offerings in the UK to arrive in the mid-1960s.
Pet shop Kingsway Stores was thriving and in today's Catwalk Pets, the unit remains a place to buy animals. New legislation coming into force in April 2020 means third party sellers must breed puppies and kittens themselves if they are to sell them. Time will tell as to whether this will affect the longevity of pet shops as a whole, if they do not undertake their own breeding.
Also featured in this video is a BT Link kiosk. These terminals offer internet access, free wifi, phone charging and phone calls. Anecdotal evidence suggests their use is not frequent. Introduced to UK streets in 2017, it will be interesting to see how long they remain.
