In 1982, energy showrooms were still popular and LEB had theirs at the top end of Barkingside High Street. Electric stoves, heaters and fridges could be purchased at such showrooms, and energy bills could also be paid. In a nod to the past, a bungalow sat at No. 171, surrounded by commercial units and pavement bustle. Ilford Historical Society's newsletter of April 2019 (downloadable here: t.co/XJevwPKLku?amp=1) has a detailed history of the bungalow and the electricity showroom building.
Kentucky Fried Chicken was a major food franchise on the high street, one of the newer American style restaurant offerings in the UK to arrive in the mid-1960s.
Pet shop Kingsway Stores was thriving and in today's Catwalk Pets, the unit remains a place to buy animals. New legislation coming into force in April 2020 means third party sellers must breed puppies and kittens themselves if they are to sell them. Time will tell as to whether this will affect the longevity of pet shops as a whole, if they do not undertake their own breeding.
Also featured in this video is a BT Link kiosk. These terminals offer internet access, free wifi, phone charging and phone calls. Anecdotal evidence suggests their use is not frequent. Introduced to UK streets in 2017, it will be interesting to see how long they remain.

Love these and hope to see more of Barkingside and hopefully Newbury Park/Gants Hill and perhaps even Wanstead/South Woodford in future?

It's a pleasure and thanks for supporting the channel :) I'm currently working through my collection of photos which is based mainly around Ilford Town Centre - however, I won't rule out those parts of the borough eventually!

Omg I remember that house as a kid driving past it, always thought what a great place to live everything on your door step shops bank’s swimming pool library bus stop. That charity shop used to be the job centre and somewhere between the charity shop and the house an old retro phone shop / shop that sells house phones I found that fascinating Love seeing these old vids keep them coming. I still live in area actually same house

Great to hear what you remember from all those years ago. It's strange to think about what some shops were back then, like home telephones and gas showrooms. We're glad you like the vids and will be uploading more, so stay tuned.

Roylance record shop, they gave dancing lesons in the evening, run by father and daughter. In 1961.

I think stores like HMV could have learnt a thing or two and held classes and events like that as a way to stay relevant. Roylance was ahead of its time I say!

I’m a charity shop shopper for clothes etc. Barkingside was once a haven of shops. But again, I use my passport to Havering. I remember the jewellers with pets and toys! An odd mix, almost unique! Nice to see an LEB sign
@IlfordRetro
@IlfordRetro 2 года назад
It's funny how the signs and logos of yesteryear lie dormant in one's memory. When we see them again it's like a lightbulb goes off in the mind. You're right about the broad mix on Barkingside High Street, even in today's less thriving retail environment it has decent independent variety.

Last time I went to that KFC was around 20 years ago and I remember being taken aback that it had glass/plastic screens over the counter in a way I had only previously seen at banks, post offices, bookies... I had never considered Barkingside a particularly rough part of Ilford.
@IlfordRetro

I agree that actually sounds very out of character for Barkingside! Something we're more used to seeing at off-licenses in dodgy parts of town, but there?!

Fascinating shots. My Dad worked for LEB for many years as a shift electrician based at Ley Street.... and before that location 1950s at an LEB radio workshop (shed) ; rear of 320 High Rd.

Thanks Leo Bluesy. I wonder what happened to the LEB (and other electricity board) engineers when things were privatised in 1989? Was there a cull or were they transferred to the new private companies? The old logos seem to live long in the memory though!

@@IlfordRetro Hi thanks for your reply.....Dad retired many years ago From Ley Street depot. They had 3 mabe huge transformers in the yard at the side of the main office block. On the top floor was a club room...LESSA. we spent many Friday or Saturday nights there in the 60s and 70s at social events. Some great old characters. Dad is still around and now 93. I remember the old LEB electric vans too from late 50s maybe.... grey with a red swirly eliptical LEB logo on the side.... and in those days they would provide sound systems for local park events..... A lifetime ago. Enjoy your pages and enthusiasm......... Regard Leo

@@leobluesy How nice to hear your dad is still around. I bet they were great times, the days when work socials at the premises used to be commonplace. Do you recall which building on Ley Street it was? Is it still standing? You have a good memory to recall those vans, it does seem a world away from today. Glad you like the channel and that it can evoke some warm memories.

@@IlfordRetro Hi thanks for reply. They were such different days back then A little rougher round the edges but not so contrived and convoluted. as modern times...Yes the LEB office was 3 floors high if my memory is right..... and on the junction of Perth and Ley St. Fronting onto Ley St. It may be a Health Center or Local Authority use..last I heard. 196 trolley buses? became 169 rl buses, the noise when the driver lost the poles on the overhead wires? the conductor trying to re-hook the poles whilst the driver tried to manoeuvre using battery power! - silent running and the smell of shelack motor windings! Wonderful!

From ‘77 to ‘81 we lived in Clayhall. Everyday I took the 169 bus to Cannon Palmer school. Anecdote: In 1979 someone started drawing an odd piece of graffiti on the back of the seats. The head of an ant, with ‘Native American’ head gear, and the words “Ants Hill”. When Adam and the Ants were dominating the charts a couple of years later, they used the same ant head logo. There was obviously a connection, but I never figured out what it was.

I loved barkingside when i was little. Churchstreet warehouse to buy a toy or something. The bingo hall where i used to go as a kid with my sis and back then it was ok to play on slot machines under 18. The kfc near gala bingo that was Kentucky fried chicken and the chicken was moist not dry like today's chicken. The fairlop oak restaurant which did a lovely prawn cocktail starter and steak for main. It is now a Wetherspoons. Barkingside and ilford were so different in the 80s. Don't like ilford when i return every now and again. Over crowded and full of people pushing and shoving.

Things certainly have changed a lot haven't they? You have some great recollections about those days and I agree that KFC now always seems dry and chewy. It's funny that when traffic flowed along Ilford High Road the pavements were deemed overcrowded and dangerous. These days there is a concerted effort to bring back the overcrowding to a once thriving commercial route!
