How can so many people be so wrong? There is no such thing as an official cast recording of the original Broadway cast. This is the original London cast recording!
Greg Stern There is. It looks like the videographer used a cell phone because of the poor quality of sound and picture. Don't forget this was taken almost 12 years ago but it's still good. Lea played Kim and I don't know who played Gigi but she looks Filipina and she was also good. Look up Miss Saigon, final performance on Broadway.
I beg to differ. I grew up in the Original London Cast. Isay Alvarez as Gigi just sounds perfect for the character. Rachele Ann Go is also talented, don't get me wrong. But she is mostly appealing to the new generation of audience. I kind of hear her rendition as more of commercialized. Isay's rendition is pure character of Gigi.
Since I saw the 25 jubileum performance on Live on HD, on Monday, I can't get this song out of my head! I saw the musical twice in London, 1991 and 1994, so no need to say: one of my favourite musicals!!! :)
+Jeremiah Dube Oh man you definitely have something to look forward to! I've seen it twice in the last 4 weeks and it's absolutely awesome. I know only two of the London cast are appearing in Broadway but I'm sure the cast there will be as good. The set, score, orchestration, and direction is spot on and it's a show not to be missed. I'm just a little sad as it means I won't get to see it again for at least another 2 years.
i never understood Kim's lyrics until now. And if they hurt me..I get it now. gigi is older so maybe she's ''done it'' more. Sex would hurt for a first timer like Kim.
@Krystal Harwood Well it's actually Gigi singing the first part; Ellen doesn't come in until towards the end of the first act, I think. Ellen is Chris' wife in America, this is set in the Engineer's brothel in Vietnam, basically.
I feel bad for Kim. she loved Chris first, then gets pushed aside by Ellen. Then Chris watches Kim prepare for her wedding, to her childhood friend who is soooo jealous of her loving Chris....what a vicious circle!

With all due respect and total objectivity, Rachel-Ann Go's rendition is more powerful. One of the rare times a new performer beats the original. Check Rachel's live duet with Lea in the 25th Gala Anniv posted in youtube.
Rachelle's rendition is different. her portrayal add an anger to the character by belting the song and heavy drop. izay's version is raw and pitiful than rachelle's. they both did a good job for this small role character.
Ako Ako Well, you're right Rachelle is more powerful, but that doesn't mean she's better. In this case, it's really a matter of taste because they have very differnt voices and interpretations of the character. Rachelle is angry and upset, Isay seems more longing and hopeful.
In the Dutch recording the new one Gigi is belting in sadness and anger, but in this one even tho the singer isn't betling it gives me the same sad feeling of a woman wanting to get out of there.

It's your opinion and I won't disagree with you but to state that Isay beats Lea by a mile is a bit much. There is no better singer, man or woman, in any Miss Saigon production than Lea. All you have to do is ask Claude Michelle-Schoenberg. Listen to her sing this song by herself with Claude accompanying her on the piano during her audition in Manila. To me, it's still the best version of this song. FTR, I think Isay was the best Gigi. Peace...
+Sabrina Jones Yes, if we speak of the richness of the voice, Isay Alvarez' voice is a lot better, Lea's voice is just perfect for her role as a young country girl while isay is a seasoned voice.
