Uncut clip from the stream of Starlings nest in Russia. Stream belongs to Oieg Pozdnaykov. A woodpecker jumped in the nestbox and attacked one of the nestlings. Luckily Mom returned quickly. At a moment some blood is seen both on the chick's beak, and on Mommy's beak, but it soon dried out and everyone is doing well. Minor injury without complications. The chick is quite fine later today too. It was a very scary moment, however, I must admit. Mommy's proximity saved the nest. A few weeks later all four chicks fledged in perfect health :)

I’m actually for the Woodpecker here. Was hoping it would have slaughtered the whole nest. Starlings and Woodpeckers compete for food and nesting areas as both are cavity nesters. The difference being the Starling is an invasive species and isn’t supposed to be here and carry all kinds of parasites and diseases harmful to native series like the Woodpecker.

@AquaClouder Glad I'm not the only one. Not that I take pleasure in seeing any baby bird killed, but starlings have been doing that to other bird's nests all along.

You are an invasive species doing a trillion times worst so am I suppose to want you slaughtered too? To what degree are they invasive? Have they caused a ridiculous amount of problems like other animals we have introduced or is it stable enough? Is it the case of the grey squirrel chasing out the red or are you exaggerating to yourself, to bring out the primordial instinct to stab and shoot and kill. You might be affecting this new balance as well, as other things seem to be affected many times by what humans would do to fix a problem they created. Again this is in Europe where nothing invasive is happening, so it's not the same set of animals, but for your mindset which sees the same nail to hammer for every personal experience, there is no need to look further into any matter with nature, which is the principal mindset behind its death coming

Don't be an idiot. The woodpecker here is the Great Spotted Woodpecker - a species native to Europe. So is the Starling.

The entrance is way too big if it fits the WP.

Why do woodpeckers do that, go halfway in, then out, and do that repeatedly?

Testing to see if they fit. I've seen them do that a lot and then either go all the way in, or make the hole larger.

Because they are scared and don't know if someone may attacк them, either from the inside or a parent from the outside, which may come quite suddenly. Such attacks can be deadly, as moms protect their nests at all costs.

Both Mom and the chick had an injury that were open and bleeded. Mom indeed irritated the sencitive area, but we can't blame her, as she didn't know. Luckily, it all dried out and wounds got naturally healed and closed.

The nest box is great but I think it can become better if you install an iron plate with smaller hole in the entrance. That way, woodpeckers won’t be able to get in

No. They are as healthy as they can be. All of the chicks grew up in perfect health and successfully fledged 2-3 weeks later. Noone has died or whatever :) When an intruder attacks, all chicks sit down or duck down quietly without any moves or sounds. It is normal behaviour always.

And why would you want to see four naturally born native innocent chicks be killed? To who did the four babies caused any harm? They were born in a country where they are totally native habitants, by two loving parents, fed and taken care of with so much love, viewed by so many viewers around the globe with so much love. Maybe you should look at your own family, parents, siblings and imagine how your own nest is, quote "shredded with blood". If you live in the States, your crowd killed sixty million native americans, aka indians, by means of, quote "shredded with blood". Perhaps a "small" nuclear device would be the best cure for these criminals, what do you think?
@ejkalegal3145

@@clearpass5001 No. Videos where the chicks get eaten are far more interesting than boring fledging videos. Nobody except 9 year olds like happy endings. There is no morality - everything is eating everything else all the time. It's just a process.

. The birds all act in accordance to instinct. These birds do not feel love or hate, instinct has guided their lives for hundreds of thousands of years. They do not have the mental capacity for the contemplation of such things, nor are they deficient because of it. They have all that is necessary to live their lives just as they are.
