I live in elkhorn NE. and I will tell you the tornado was absolutely horrifying, the tornado sirens going off so loud and wind breezing gave me the chills. Luckily my neighborhood didn’t get hit, but 240th street got hit and I will tell you I am so close to 240th street. The tornado was forming right behind my school, it was so thick and terrifying to those who lost their homes. I’m praying for them because all of these photos are horrible.☹️

This has to be an EF-4; seeing multiple houses being COMPLETELY FLATTENED is just horrible. Tornado alley states need Florida-style building codes (they lead the nation in building code strength).
@Trahzy

Hurricane codes won't do much for tornadoes since tornadoes are way more violent, usually have higher winds and suck like a vacuum.

Ah. No. To cost prohibitive. Besides a tornado is a mile wide. A hurricane is a thousand miles wide. The odds of getting hit by a tornado are extremely low. Read the studies. Where as a hurricane is a pretty likely thing. Every couple of years.

Looks like EF2 damage on most houses, with EF3 on the partially destroyed houses (no roofs, some rooms destroyed). It looks like some of the houses were completely slabbed, indicating EF4-EF5 damage very locally. Big indicator that it was a multi-vortex tornado. Alternatively, it could be that those houses were still under construction, but I doubt it. Hope everyone can rebuild!

What is truly heart wrenching and disgusting Is that many volunteers wanted to go out and help in the surrounding communities that were hit and damaged so severely But unfortunately, we’re not allowed to because there are people out there who authorities were trying to keep away because those people were not there to help they were there to loot and steal what, if anything, these people had left. That reality alone boggles my mind to no end. These people literally lost everything they had in an instant, and what they have left was at risk of being stolen from them in their most vulnerable moment. All I can do is pray for the people that would do such a thing to someone else because that is truly evil.. fortunately I was able to find lost pets that families lost in this disaster and help reunite them with their families. I am a professional firefighter, but unfortunately was not able to help in that capacity due to being injured and recovering for a year and unable to perform my regular service duty of a first responder.

To the comments thinking that it would be better for homes to be constructed out of stronger materials like concrete, there are a few economic reasons why this isn't the case in the US: 1. Tornadoes, while common in the midwest in general, are very rare to hit an exact area. Since we don't know ahead of time where tornadoes will strike exactly, it's difficult for a developer to justify the more expensive housing costs per square foot / metre for a given area of homes. These areas have cheap land to begin with, so most buyers would prefer to go with a large wood house that might come close to being hit by a tornado once every 50 to 100 years over a smaller concrete house. 2. Basements are the norm for new developments. Notice how NO ONE in this development died or was critically injured. This is because that while wooden homes are more easily blown away, new construction requires basements / storm cellars to be installed, which are made of concrete. In a strong tornado event, if the whole home was made of concrete, the person inside can still run into a host of problems if they aren't underground. This includes windows getting blown out, the ceiling being ripped off, or debris flying into the home at over 400 kph. This means even if the home is structurally sound after a tornado, it can still be gutted. If the home isn't structurally sound, it may have to be demolished anyway. While yes, European style homes are good against tornadoes, they aren't as good against strong tornadoes like this one. 3. Insurance and economies of scale. The "good" thing about how common tornadoes are in the US is that almost 100% of the time, homes are insured in the case of a force of nature. There are exceptions to this, especially in more hurricane-prone areas, but since all homes are already made of wood across the US, they are cheap to replace. A European style home, which is great in it's own right, is simply more expensive to create and scale production. Insurance costs would increase on top of the sale prices for homes, and again, most people would rather buy a cheaper wooden home with a small chance of being blown away in any given year with a basement than buy a more expensive european style home. In conclusion, strong tornadoes like these are common overall, yet very rare to impact any given place. Most homes are new along with the cities they make up, are well-insured, have basements, and are designed to be blown away while still providing safety through those basements. US style-wood homes are cheaper to replace en masse, and European homes, while stronger than US homes, will still need to be replaced for tornadoes exceeding EF3. In most cases, the extra cost isn't justified.

The problem with construction in America is that everything is Wood, inside and out, easy to rebuild, but poor Decision when you live in a Tornado Zone. Those Houses should be rebuilt with CONCRETE EXTERIOR WALLS. The same thing happens in Miami,FL with Hurricanes, construction is CHEAP and the cost is EXPENSIVE when you lose EVERYTHING.

there’s something called bricks, and tons of Americans use bricks and stone to construct their homes without a doubt Europe does have very strong houses but just because you think Americans build houses with cardboard it doesn’t mean it can’t protect the people hiding in there.😂
