Wolsey was a brilliant study in character development over a long arc. It was well written, so there were no unbelievable leaps in personality, but what really made it work was Robert's skill at making us see a character, who was essentially introduced to us as a bad-guy bureaucrat, as a human being. And eventually as someone we respected and liked.
Excellent discussion, what a really decent guy Robert Picardo is, by far my favourite episode so far...well done David you hit the ball out of the park.
What are charming gentleman. I remember him as a doctor on China Beach long before he was a doctor on Voyager. Woolsey was initially a PITA for the SG1 team, but Stargate was wonderful for growing characters. As they did with Jewell’s Jennifer Keller character (who was afraid of everything initially but grew to be heroic), Woolsey grew from a PITA to a man of responsibility and as one who slowly learned to face fears the old Woolsey would not have. I was amused that Woolsey actually began to have a sense of humor. I look forward to seeing where Woolsey is now whenever Stargate returns.
RIP Cliff Simon. Ba'al on Stargate was one of the greatest villians in sci-fi of all time. Died in a tragic accident Kiteboarding, about a week after this was taped
I like watching some of these interviews to hear what they say. Good luck ever getting Richard Dean Anderson on the show. I hope to see him on dial the gate though.
It wasn't until the Season 5 episode 'Inquisition' - where Woolsey defended the team against the tribunal - that I really liked him as a character. After that, he was one of 'US'. Picardo, on the other hand, I've always really liked.
One of my favorite things about Stargate was the great bad guys. Ba'al was horrible, but reveled in it so wonderfully. Kinsey, Maybourne, Woolsey... wonderful bad guys. But Maybourne and Woolsey got to become good guys (kind of...) 😎
Truly enjoyed the SG franchise... and it is a damn shame that SyFy channel died. on the positive side,, I am grateful to Bob for the two franchises I had the pleasure of enjoying his acting and singing. Voyager (singing) and SG franchise
One of things that I really liked about Woolsey was that he represented that the "system" the "man" as O'Neill called it, that was so often an antagonist could actually work. As someone who believes that government can be successful, that following the rules is usually a good thing it means a lot to me how he ended up.
You know the biggest thing with Woolsey was he was a bureaucrat were everything was by the book. The rules are there for a reason and as such need to be followed without question. The growth we saw from him was real life isn't so black & white! He found himself needing more & more to venture into the grey area. He learned as a leader off Atlantis that he had to bend the rules and blur the lines that in all gave him a far better understanding off the people he was in command off and a far better appreciation off the work Weir & Carter both had to deal with. The writers did a great job to turn a apparent asshole into a reasonable human being by the end. Oh and yes the acting was good to... Haha...... Shame it all ended after S5 by dropping a great big city in San Fransisco bay clocked! Talk about a shipping hazard!
Ps I would love have Robert Picardo have a youtube channel named The sick bay.. the channel that would cure the mind with laughter and good stories told and it should be decorated like the Voyager Sick bay.
I _hate_ clipshow episodes. I understand it might be a good way to "catch up" for more casual viewers, but for me, it always feels like they dont have enough imagination to fill another episode and do those instead.. Always feel robbed after those. Nowadays, i just skip them.
Thank goodness for video on demand! Now you can catch up on everything you haven't seen and watch it from the beginning, and you get series long arcs to boot. Definitely the better way to do it.
As much as I agree, Disclosure was a pivotal episode with some important decisions and advancement for the series. So it's not easily skipped. Unlike, say, the Season 2 finale of TNG - Shades of Gray. You can skip that completely and never know (or care) that it existed.
