Here you will learn what a function is in math, the definition of a function, and why they are important.
Functions have applications in algebra, calculus, science, and engineering. We first begin by describing a function as a mathematical machine that takes input numbers "x" and computes output numbers "f(x)".
We then describe the input numbers "x" as being the domain of the function, while the output numbers f(x) are the range of the function. We will plot several functions including linear functions, quadratic functions, cubic functions, and more.

Back in the 80's I made my way through Math, PreAlgebra, Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Advanced Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Circuit Analysis, Transistor Analysis, etc in the evenings at the local Junior College for about 4 years with a 4.0 GPA. Life & Family soon became my Priority and I never got into Calculus. So, I figured I did pretty good thus far...how hard could it be? Ha...Calculus is Humbling! Especially if your on your own. Everything always started off with "Function of X"...WTF is that!? Why do they always start off like you already know what that is? Now I know and feel like I can now move forwards :) Your Explanation of the various "Functions of X" is well done and quite Informative too!!!

I'm honestly thankful I came across this channel. my daughter is taking algebra her first time ever and AP... with a horrible teacher who doesn't believe in actually teaching or notes.... 🤦🏻‍♀️ just watch a brief video, either get it or you don't.. here's the worksheet and do it. Told her to ask questions/make it a habit (she's 12, so learning to over come that fear of asking questions and taking quicker notes...), but her teacher responds with, "you'll figure it out as we go along..." luckily, algebra has been one of my stronger areas, but trying to remember from high school. when she shows me her homework and asks, I'm like oh this and that.... not fully paying attention... then give it a 2nd look and I'm like 😳... noticed all the answers were correct but always told her if she can explain/show me how she got her answer then I know she fully understands. she blantantly said, it doesn't make any sense and this is what the teacher told us to write down and we moved on to the next chapter..clearly mentioned no 1 else in her class understood either and even tried asking, to be dismissed. she kind of had an idea, just that uncertainty and I couldn't think how to simplify from the beginning... point being, less than 10 so far of watching this video and I already know this video will help explain and make sense quickly w/o the stress. thank you for breaking it down into layman terms.. explaining the ins and outs and why it's called function of x.... etc etc etc she's been sick the last week in a half, so with already a bs teacher then so far behind knowing her teacher will just say... you'll catch up...... just 🙅🏻‍♀️ nope. (picked up her work and go figure.... not a single page of notes... just the work) exactly why I always worked w/ her over the summer for years. never know.. anyways... sorry for the long comment.... thank you so much for this video.

This may sound trivial or hair-splitting, but I'd prefer to hear, "A function is a machine that USES values of x to generate y." I think students will relate to that quicker than most other phraseology. In other words, plug in a value of x and the function spits out a value of y. You did a good job. It was lots better than Mr. Bloom the freak who pretended to teach us Calculus 101 & 102 did.

This is too clear, like a spotless ocean that directly reflects what I exactly need to get. This precisely represents the perfect reviewer if you forgot why that certain function looks like that in the graph. Very much appreciated! Thank you.

I think the reason this topic is tough is because we don’t have a good explanation or overview of what it is and some different ways we might see it. In fact I think all of math is like that, How many of you can recall doing the textbook problems and then you get the homework and can’t figure out how to do a problem because it looks different in some way? It’s because we aren’t taught to know, we are often just taught to memorize. Math is so much more enjoyable in my experience if I have concepts broken down like this. Great job!

I started following you in 2020, and I enjoy your lessons so much. The way you break everything down for the comprehension of everyone not minding the age thrills me. Thank you so much. I have searched for you on other social media handles but couldn't find any.

When I was in primary school (an Arab country) our math teacher used to beat us without any reason, it was since then that I hated maths and thought that I would'nt understand things because of the evil teacher.........Your videos give me hope and I will watch them to sit for a GRE exam, it's true that GRE math is not that difficult but I forgot many things from middle school onwards.............I juse want to thank you for another thing , statistics . Your videos on statistics were so helpful and because of them I had a very good mark in a universitiy module on the subject.......Thank you so much teacher, you are the best
