My name is Sam and together with my girlfriend Lyanne, I am on a quest to restore the beauty of this old Italian villa from 1895. Join us as we have to let go of our Dutch habits to fit in in our Italian surroundings, were the word 'plan' gets redefined and our tastebuds are awakened.
The goal of this project is to show that with limited financial means and a lot of optimism we can resurrect the beauty of this abandoned villa in a green and sustainable way. But most of all learn from everything that we encounter and enjoy it whilst we're at it.

All the bricks and gravel is most likely the original driveway and parking area which makes more sense.. to drive up to the house and unload rather than draging everything and all building materials that will be needed and have the veggie garden around the perimeter or somewhere else..

I think all those bramble roots sticking out along the edge of your new beds are going to find a lovely home in your new soil and you will have a weeding nightmare. Use some of those concrete dividers along those outer edges (near the wall with brambles) to keep as many roots out as possible.

Just a thought/tip for the potatoes You can have them grow in a container, a box / tyres/plastic buckets etc in general anything you’ve found already in the “jungle”. This also will keep them from overtaking the other plants around them. I’m Australian and a lot of my neighbours are Vietnamese, Chinese, Thai and so forth. Every inch is planted and when they run out of space the larger plants like pumpkin, potatoes, rockmelon etc are contained in tubs . I’ve done it myself and it’s successful. Potato are also good for breaking up your hard ground. My father planted potatoes in our back garden . After harvesting he planted a lawn.

Succes

Hello, I found your channel just a few weeks ago and am almost caught up on your videos! You two, your families, and friends work together so well; it's very nice to see! Also, knowing the videos are a LOT of work too, they are very much appreciated 😊 I agree with other commenters on this video, that the area with the gravel is certainly an old parking area. I'll be interested to see historical photographs, when you are ready to share them, and to see the evolution of the site and its driveways, when the canal was built, and the additions to the villa! Thank you again! -Jo

Hadn't you considered renting a small digger/dozer so you could triple the amount of work you wanted done to loosen the soil for the garden, or finally deal with those brambles all over your fence, once and for all?

To brake down the clay, amend your soil with gypsum and earthworm castings. It works very well. If you get a lot of leaves in Fall, dig them under. Make sure they are not acidic leaves. By next year you should find lots of worms on your soil. Look for gypsum at a feed store. It’s usually a lot cheaper. Here in the US it’s $10 for a 20 pound bag.

I am surprised at the amount of everything you are planting or intend to plant (food that is). For two of you it seems extreme. Will you really eat that much? No matter of course, if you are happy to do the work, good on you. My grandparents, who were great gardeners, always planted potatoes in raised bed rows. I have heard since they like drainage. Make Do Grow vlog have a great garden and have specific episodes about it. Those plastic bags may be very handy for rubbish, rubble or anything unwanted. Best wishes.

I might recommend that when you transplant, pull by the leaves and NOT the stems. Also, you may want to consider a no dig garden in a raised bed. You've done a great job digging down, now fill it will leaves, grass, and compost a full foot above the ground level. That will make your future plants VERY happy and be much easier to harvest - especially those things that fruit underground like potatoes, onions, carrots, etc. Good luck, DA

You can make labels for the beds out of yoghurt containers cut into strips. Good idea to draw up a plan while you still remember what you wanted in each row then pop the labels in later as otherwise you won’t know what’s coming up when they start to shoot up.

The concrete boarders are BEAUTIFUL! 😍💖Treasure!!! I have never grown potatoes or onions before looking forward to see how these grow😃😃😃my grandmother planted garlic everywhere if there was a spot of dirt it had a garlic clove in it 😁she said it helped to keep bugs off her roses too🌹🌹🌹she would plant peppermit plants around the border of her house including doors and windows said spiders and mice hate mint...idk about Italy but here in the states many of the local nurseries sell dirt /top soil/compost soil etc by the yard or truck and will deliver ....its cheaper than buying the bags....but idk if they do that in Italy? The only advice i have is Never Never plant Bamboo it will invade, take over and destroy your property ...you will Never get rid of it
@Villa_Oliva
@Villa_Oliva 3 месяца назад
Thanks for the tips! most of the time, what older people say they did, has been tested and proven and works well. So I will keep it in mind! surprisingly enough, I couldn't find it any cheaper. I am also used to the same principle in the Netherlands, but found it's quite different here. (Or I haven't found the right place yet) I think I spotted bamboo somewhere on the property already, so let's see how big that has gotten over the years haha. Thanks again!

Have a look at the "no dig" method of preparing your garden beds. Also,when opening bags of pretreated soil, you may like to consider wearing a mask. I know several people who became very sick from breathing in the sphores that grew in the bags from being enclosed for long periods. Love your enthusiasm and vision for your future garden. Also, there are 2 types of comquats, edible and ornamental.

If you need to get things in soil quickly, lay a sealed bag of soil down, cut a rectangle of the top plastic off, and plant right in the bag. Many types of plants can start out like that, or even stay like that for the season (lettuce, strawberries, etc.). In your case, you can put them in the ground when you get back.

I feel you’ve chosen the worse place to plant your garden veg for many reasons, it’s an old parking spot and if petrol remnants are in the ground it’s unplantable, they’ve flattened it therefore strengthening the ground, if you weaken it it might be catastrophic when heavy rains come, the soil needs balancing also, but however this is how we learn. I hope there are not any nighttime or daytime critters that like eating new vegetable shoots, or are you planning a cover for the vegetable patch !!

Are there any olive trees on the property? There must have been at one time for the name to be given. Good work with the clearing and planting. Try to continue bit by bit with the clearing, maybe 20 minutes every day if you can, in between other projects and tasks. When you return from the Netherlands of course.

there aren't actually. The name of the villa originates from the surname of the man in whose name the villa was built. Good one, will definitely have to do that

I did think about it, and that's the plan, it's just a bit cut up. So, as explained, I needed to get some stuff into the ground, that's why I tackle this part of the garden bit by bit. Because I simply do not have the time to level everything first.

Hi Sam, It's Debbie from Australia here, I'm wondering why you don't hire a machine for a day just to make it a bit quicker & easier, any reason why you don't ??
@Villa_Oliva

Hi Debbie, good point. I guess I'm just stubborn like that. I like a good workout and I want to be in touch with my soil, see what things I find and I get an idea of what I am working with. Those are the main reasons, apart from the financial benefits.

Wishing you & your partner the best with all the renovations, the end result will be a beautiful home for you both. Cheers Debbie

@@Villa_Oliva when you eat them be sure they are really ripe and if the interior is quite sour some people will squeeze the juice out first and then the sweetness of the rind is more predominate. Or just make marmalade 😊
