YORKSHIRE DALES TOUR FEATURING GUNNERSIDE, MUKER, KELD AND THE TAN HILL INN
"Meadows of Muker”
Filmed 29th March 2017
Post-production completed 20th May 2017
I plan a walk in part of Swaledale in the Yorkshire Dales. Unfortunately the rain forces a change in my plans, but despite the weather I still enjoy a tour of the dale where I visit several of its small villages and hamlets. The high point, literally, is that I even manage to enjoy a swift half in the UK’s highest inn…..
Filmed in the Yorkshire Dales in the county of North Yorkshire. Locations include Gunnerside, Muker, Keld and the Tan Hill Inn.
Written, researched, directed, camera and sound, edited and music by Patrick Leach.
Any other names credited in this film, i.e. Bob Morgan and Martin Roy, are pseudonyms, which I used at the time of making this film. However, I no longer use these pseudonyms as I want viewers to be clear that my films are completely my own work.
Click here for a map showing the route of the locations used in the film. It is not a walking route, but it shows the route on which I travelled by both car and foot between the various locations featured in the film: osmaps.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/r...

As with all the films I make, this is a mini-movie of my personal journey along the walk, in which I might share some of my own personal stories, and not actually intended to be a guide to the area.

Even though wet weather, Patrick, I can imagine the whole area being gorgeous in warm and sunny months of the years. The hilly scenery is so fabulous, and each of these villages have lovely stone buildings, some very unusual in architecture. Many thanks for this showing, through this very wet day, and giving us the pleasure of enjoying the video.

I can remember this day very clearly as I'd planned a circular walk from Muker to Keld and back, but the rain changed my plans, so I ended up doing more of a whistlestop tour of Swaledale. Glad you enjoyed this Ffranc, thanks as always for watching 👍

I'm almost glad it rained this day Patrick. Great piece of history. Thanks for sharing, really enjoyed it.

Yeah I made this one up as I went along really because of the rain, but I was happy with the results. Thanks again 👍

During covid, those benches in middle of village, were used as a meeting place, for older members of village to sit and talk. All while self distancing, others brought out their own chairs and the community managed to not feel so isolated.

Superb Patrick. Now that's proper valley life. I was loving them big hills looming over the stone villages. What a life once upon a time. I felt a bit of it here. Great walk albeit a wet one. You didn't mind though because at least it was a good excuse for a half in the Tan Hill. Of course I remember a bunch of people surviving a bad winter in there some while ago. It can be serious up there. Well, just popping in to see how you are. I hope you;re safe mate. I'm in lock down to. We're allowed out that's something. Be careful out there Patrick. All the best. Mark

Hey Mark, thanks for popping in. Yeah this was a real quaint valley, one of the loveliest in the Dales for me. You can certainly imagine life in those isolated villages in a time gone by. Of course today Swaledale still gets very isolated, especially when the snow comes and has been flooded many times, but hey what a lovely valley all the same. The Tan Hill is one of those "must-visit" places for me, but yeah it sure can be serious up there. At the moment all is good with me thanks Mark in this grim time for us all. It's just strange hearing very few cars travelling down my normally busy street, and hardly any walkers too. Hope you're well and safe too Mark. We'll all get through this. All the best to you and stay safe. Cheers, Patrick :)

@@solitaryrambler A pleasure as always Patrick. It looks spectacular. I was straight onto the maps and google sussing out where you were. Maybe I'll visit the area one day. It's good to hear you're OK. Yeah I've been walking right down the middle of streets usually to busy to do so. I must admit I love that - no traffic. I'm getting on. I have a lot of work to do/writing and a project next year. Yes, see you on the other side. Peace bro.

I hope you do visit one day Mark, definitely worth it and so much to see. Yeah in many ways wouldn't it be nice when all this is over the streets still remain as quiet as they are at the moment! I know I'm dreaming ha ha! :) Glad to know you've got plenty of stuff on. Look forward to hearing more on that when the time comes. Catch you soon and peace to you my friend :)

Me and my late husband used to go to the Yorkshire Dales often. My favourite Dale is Swaledale and my ancestors are from the Yorkshire Dales. The last time we visited there was in Gunnerside in 2020. Thank you for posting this video.....happy memories. No matter what the weather is like the Yorkshire Dales are stunning.

I knew i knew the name The Tan Inn i was just saying to Lee i passed there a few times in my younger days when i was involved in one of my previous jobs as a scaffolder... and yes i recall ted mault dropping his feather by the window .. lol Thank you so much Patrick for yet another great film and walk Keld was something else it seemed so remote ... You managed to find some more churchs for me enjoy ... love my churchs ....and yes i was one of those that always says he get s all the good weather but you know what it actually worked quite well with the misty hills around muker .. Thank you once again mate we fully enjoy it ... regards Frank and Lee ...

I thought you might like the churches mate, I love the one in Muker in particular. I too remember those ads with Ted Moult and the feather at the Tan Hill Inn! You were certainly one of the people previously who commented on the good weather in my films I know!! :-) It was nice though not to have sunshine again though as I think it's nice to give the films a variety of looks with the differences in weather. Thanks for watching Frank and Lee. Cheers, Patrick :-)

I love how you changed your plans because of the rain and still made such a brilliant film,it all comes so naturally to you,I must admit Patrick I also often thought to myself how lucky you always seem to be with the weather so I got quite a surprise when I saw the opening shot in the rain,I don't know if it's just me but I love walking in the rain,as long as it's not a downpour,especially in a lovely village like this or the coast,there's something so peaceful about it. I liked the idea of the honesty box at Keld for the car park,I preferred the old longer name though which meant Apple trees by the spring,how sad that such a remote small peaceful place could lose four sons to the horrors of the first world war,I remember in an earlier film you speaking of Thankful villages,Keld was not so lucky. I looked up about the Swaledale festival after the Reeth film and the Muker Silver Band are playing there too,there is so much happening with bands and walks and food and activities,I'm surprised it's not more well known and will have to go. I'm really glad you took shelter in the Tan Hill,it was the sensible thing to do 😉 Thanks for another superb film. Pete.
@solitaryrambler
@solitaryrambler 5 лет назад
Well the original plan was to have followed a circular walk between Muker and Keld, a route that was in a book of guided walks in the Yorkshire Dales, but with the weather that idea turned out to be impractical. So I decided to film what I could without moving away too far from the car, and I was lucky to have shot what I did really. As I wasn't filming the planned walk, I decided to film Gunnerside too as that wasn't part of the original plan, so I was pleased to have included that too. The Tan Hill Inn was always part of the plan, so it was a great place to end on! Thanks again Pete :)
