I did this job a week ago without any issues. A couple of notes to help anyone else who needs to do this. Took me about 8 hours as I ran into a couple of things that required more time than usual. 1.Have the torque specs for valvetronic motor + gasket, essentric shaft sensor and valve cover(should say right on it) before hand so you dont have to spend time looking. 2.Take pictures of the wire routing so that you can place the wire harness back in the proper locations. 3.Have lots of towels and rags ready because it can get messy fast with all the oil. 4.Removing the oil breather hose was the hardest part and took me an hour, I was super careful because I did not want to break it as replacing adds a couple of hours to the job. You can only grab one side of the clip with your hand the other side is hard to get leverage on so I bend a screw driver into a weird U shape in order to get pressure onto the other side of the clip in order to remove it. Take a look online of the oil breather hose so you know what to expect. 5. Removing the valve cover was not that hard but I could not do it until I removed the rubber gasket that is around the windshield wiper cover. Could not remove the cover for the life of me until I removed that gasket as this gave me an extra couple of mm to pull the cover out. 6. You do not need to cut anything as other videos suggest but you do have to kind of figure out the best angle and make as much clearance for yourself as possible. Nothing required extreme force so if you find yourself using all your strength to get something off you are probably doing it wrong, stop and reassess the situation. 7. To get all the bolts of the valve cover I highly suggest you get a good set of swivel attachments and different size socket extensions. This was key for me. Im sure it can be done with one set but having multiple sets of sockets helped me allot. 8. When you finish there might be smoke and weird smell from oil dripping on the exhaust, this is normal. It should go away after a short drive. It kinda freaked me out for a couple of mins because it smelled like burnt electronics for some reason but it was just oil. 9.Disconnect the battery of you might have a badddd time. 10.I had a tiny leak coming from what I suspect is the two security bolts for the valvetronic motor mount. This went away in about a week and stopped leaking. This might be due to a bad cover but it went away. Hope this helps someone

I bought my daughter a 2011 BMW 328i SULEV with barely 75,500 miles about a year ago for college. And to my surprise it is still cover for maintenance up to 150,000 or 15 years from the dealership. Just had the valve cover, one oxygen sensor replace, new radiator, one solenoid replace, and a free rental car for two days for FREE. 😀

Removing the fuse block cover and wire bundles out of the way did the trick for me. I tried yanking the cover out for almost an hour before that!
@80kenuel
@80kenuel 4 года назад
You dont need to remove fuse block cover or wires. You just have to remove the cover near the wipers and it comes out easily. I learned that after I struggled like an 1.5hr hours.

I was also planning to replace the valve cover and eccentric shaft sensor. The instructions were very clear, thanks for making this. Unfortunately, all was going well till I dropped the bottom bolt of the eccentric shaft sensor down the timing chain tunnel. My mistake was not having a magnet around to insert the new screw in. So for those who wants to also replace the eccentric shaft sensor, be sure to not drop a screw in any way like I did. Now I have to get it out somehow maybe from draining the oil and using a magnet or worse case tow it to a shop to open the oil pan.

This video was an amazing help. For me there was a metal ac line by the firewall that was not letting the cover come off. Push this down gently, and you will get it off. Took me hours to realize it was blocking the cover from coming off.

I followed this as a guide today. It took me 7 hours and three trip to the parts store. I appreciate the video. I could not have done it otherwise. I had to glue the gasket into the groove on the valve cover to keep it from falling out during reinstall. Will drive it a week and check for leaks. Hopefully, all is good.

Thank you for the video. My advise: disconnect the battery, make sure you do no start the car before double checking the ground connections on the valve cover between the coils, if run without the grounds being connected you might blow your oil level sensor. Check the air valve on the valve cover, often the membrane inside is gone, it will give you trouble later.

One thing you might want to look for when doing this are cracks in the VC, I found a few after doing the VC gasket. Rather than pulling it apart again and paying for a new one I V-groved the cracks and used Devcon to seal them up. The beauty cover covers the valve cover so you can’t see these area and the it’s been leak free for the last two years.

Thank God and thank you for this video! I had to replace my crank case cover because of the built in PCV valves and could not get the cover back in. I didn't initially realize the amount force that needed to be applied to push it in. To others doing this same thing I would suggest laying out the gasket first and then pushing the cover in, that way you do not damage the gasket.

Nicely done, but I’d be a little worried using a pry bar to separate the valve cover since it can sometimes cause deformations on the surface causing vacuum leaks. But other than that, you did everything perfectly and it’s a good idea to do this by yourself because it’s saves a lot of money. BMW just quoted me $961 for the same job but I got all the parts from them and just fixed it myself after watching a lot of videos on it and this was one of the most helpful.

Out of curiousty, how long did it take you and did you have a helper while doing it? I'm contemplating tackling the job with a buddy since the parts are cheap. I'm just curious how many hours it's going to be for two people that haven't ever done this type of job on a BMW.
@TheGbizaille
@TheGbizaille 4 года назад
@@kandersen1991 sorry for the delay, I just saw your comment. I had an helper but I was really taking it slow. I did it over two days, first day was just removing everything and the second day was putting everything back together. That hose at the back of the valve cover is a big pain to take of. Also if your valve cover is leaking there is a very big chance your PCV valve (which is incorporated in the valve cover) is getting bad, so you might want to replace your valve cover at the same, cause if it's the original it will eventually start to crack at some point. Finding a quality valve cover cheaper than the OEM (at least $400) might be an issue. But let me know if you need a link for that. Thanks.

I did this job once. Huge pain in the ass. The dealer improperly installed the gasket around the spark plugs hole and oil leaked into the spark plug tubes. By the time it started to cause a misfire, it was out of warranty. The video I found took apart more of the rain gutter area. Windshield whippers and some plastic around the bottom of the windshield. It gave you more room to wiggle the value cover off. It still required some magic angle but I think it made it easier. Finding that magic angle is the worst part of the job. It was amazing what a pain in the ass this was to do just to remove a valve cover. It felt more like removing a head. My Porsche 914 valve covers pop off in three seconds with a screwdriver. Replacing gaskets on that car is like a ten minute job, tops.

+jesusplayer1 I actually pointed out at the point where I'm( taking off) the gasket right at that corner that is the only thing you have to mainly bypass right after that it should be perfectly smooth sailing

Here's what I did: have a buddy stand next to the passenger door, reach down the windscreen and under the hood. Grab that lip on the firewall and PULL!. That provides about a 1/4" extra clearance which lets the cover move much more easily on/off. That clearance is the hardest part of this whole deal.
