Best video I've found for this procedure. Pulling the bumper cover loose makes all the difference. Otherwise, you would need really small hands to reach the light housing. Thanks for posting. You saved my hands, my time, and my patience.
I watched a different video on this topic first and they oversimplified it. Then I ran into some difficulty with the removal. I like that your video didn’t gloss over the minor challenges. Thanks for showing everyone how to overcome
I started to replace the Headlamp Housings on my 08 Avalanche and got stuck when the assembly wouldn't come out .so I came in and looked it up on youtube and came across this video---THANKYOU watched the Vid and went out and had the Assembly out in seconds...
This is one of the best videos on this model. If you have small hands and contort and are only changing bulbs then do as Willie mentioned. But if you are a big guy and are replacing the headlight lens assembly I jack up the vehicle and take off the tires. It gives me more room and I don't have to work around the tire(I am a bigger guy). Also I put a little WD or what ever you choose on the Two bumper bolts, makes it easier to run the bolts up with your fingers. This is an easy thing to do and should less than hour for both lights.
The best video on dealing with bulb replacement as well. If you have large hands the DTRL bulb replacement should be done using this method. Save a little skin and do it this way.
First off, thank you Ben for this tutorial!!!! We had to replace a running light previously and learned the hard way how difficult and time consuming it is just to change a light bulb. Poorly designed on Chevy's part. So when the next running light went out, I didn't worry about it. But alas, the low beam failed. CRAP! (On a side note: I should not feel pained to change a light bulb in a car, but I digress) I bought every dang light in both housing units from our mechanic, watched your video, and went to work. Replaced every light even though only two lights were out. Should be good for a few years now, right?!. I am a woman and though I have smaller hands, I could not make enough room without removing the screw inside the wheel well to change out all the lights. Couldn't get to the lower lights (running light and blinkers). It takes maybe 5 minutes to remove all those parts in the wheel well and provides more hand room rather than fighting to untwist things with limited space. I didn't however, completely remove the light housing unit but left it plugged in. This RN gives you 5 thumbs up! What a dumb design Chevy!
I am very pleased that it was a help to you Tonya! You should be set for at least a year now, worry free from replacing bulbs. It's great you didn't have to remove it all the way, that probably saved a few minutes!! Thank you, Thank you for your support!!
I"m not a Mechanic, but I started to do some of this and kept thinking all of this to change a light bulb? So, I took the two screws out on top of the Headlight Housing, the few screws on the Grill, slid my arm behind the Headlight Housing, with my fingers, I was able to rotate the light bulb holder out and replace the low Beam Bulb, then the Running Light Bulb. Sometimes it's the less you know that can get the job done without all of the steps that a Pro would take. I"m always thinking that there's more that one way to skin a Cat. I still like this Video.
I was thinking the same thing.... have to take off the inner fender well, the bumper and the grille to change a friggin' bulb? Sounds like some nimrod college grad who's never worked on a car designed this thing :(
Thank you for your suggestion. Other folks have mentioned the same thing and I agree with you. This video should help anyone with replacing the whole housing as well.
You are welcome, I didn't make the comment as a criticism or to be rude. Your Video put me on the right track because I didn't know where to start, then I thought, let me try this. You made a Video, that helped, I didn't.
Thanks for the video, I've changed DRL and Head light bulbs in the housing without removing it completely but you still have to follow all these steps to get at them. I am changing both Headlight assemblies out and installing new ones since the old ones are worn/faded/cracked. ($120/pair shipped with bulbs) Thank God for RU-vid University - a Chevy dealer would completely rip you off to change a light bulb, in fact most routine maintenance can be performed by a DIYer mechanic, with the correct tools, patience and RU-vid. Thanks again, good video.
Thank you so much, I was trying to replace my stock headlights with LEDs and I could not fit the new light for the low beam into the hole so now I know how to get the whole headlight out and look at it thank you so much I greatly appreciate the tutorial amazing
Me too I was so stumped about how these gm engineers came up with this difficult route. If it was this hard to change it I might as well change every bulb so I know I won’t have to change them anytime soon. Lol great video
Very good video ! 2009 Suburban DRL light out so not a clue as to what you all have to do ! Low point position as you know so two bolt s only do not cut it !!! Thank you !! Can only imagine what a dealer wants for labor ...
Nice vid man done my drivers side today thanks to fedx you can not get both sides at the same time. It went good thanks to your vid. The only thing is that the bumper on the lower inaide by the grill and the light are a little off. The lower left hand corner of bumper is out a little farther. All the other lines match up great. Not that noticeable but just curious.
Well. I figured at 4 in the afternoon I would have time to swap my headlights out. Guess I will wait till I have a full day. I wonder if the engineers could have made it any harder.
Thank you so much for this informative video. I bought my Avalanche used and the previous owner had installed bright LED headlights. I disliked them so much, I wanted the original halogen lights back. With your video, I changed all 10 bulbs (I replaced all 5 bulbs on each), and the entire job took only an hour. Thanks again.
Which bulb do you recommend that are long lasting, perhaps LED, minus fans ? Not looking for performance, rather longevity, since these bulb replacements are no fun - thank you
I had an envoy that was literally two slides and it popped out. Not a single tool required. Not that I’m afraid to get dirty it just seems a little extensive for a trivial part
I bought new led lights with the cooling fan on the back. Does anyone know if they would even fit before I bother. The fan isn’t that long but if anyone knows if there is zero clearance behind each bulb housing that would be good to know. Thanks
ok ben good job....i have a 08 tahoe....i like to run with headlites on all the time day and night....so what happened was i left my headlites on one day and forgot that i should have turned them off?.... i discovered that the headlites do go off after about 5 minutes during the daylight if i leave them on....thank GOD or otherwise my battery would go dead....i discovered this accidentally ....now my question is this ? is there a way to regulate how long the lights will stay on before turning off during the daytime.....? this suits me fine but i know people will say " hey mike you left your lights on" and i will always have to reply ..."they turn off automatically..." the thing is five minutes is quite long time....got any advise for me? thanks...
Hi Mike! thanks for your support! First of all the does the "five minute" duration only happen if you leave your lights on or in the auto function? or does it turn the lights on for five minutes regardless of you turning them on of off before shutting car off?
@@bensielaffauto22 Ben - the light switch is on on......and not auto....like i said i turn the the switch on and when i shut the car off during the day the lights stay on and then some 4 or5 minutes they go off....i would just like to get that down to about 2 minutes....thanks. mike b.
Lmao I should make a video. Take out headlight bolts, take out bolt holding on windshield wiper fluid. There's a rubber wall there move off to the side. Switch bulb. I did this in 3 min
These headlights were horribly designed by General Motors. It’s no wonder that they are so easy for mechanics to botch due to their horrendous placement and unreliability.
