We continued our voyage up the Gulf of California, stopping at the beautiful crescent shaped harbor on Isla San Francisco before sailing north to Puerto Escondido and the Loreto National Marine Park. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is full of beautiful island anchorages, an abandoned salt mining town, and some of the best panaramic views of our cruise so far. We sailed past breaching whales and pods of dolphins, the rich life in the sea contrasting to the desert ruggedness on land. After so much time on the sea, we also headed inland to see a historic mission high in the mountains at San Javier.
Julia is a traditionally built wooden boat, planked in fir on oak frames. She was launched in 1960, and is still a great boat for cruising the world's oceans!

They really do it well. Eventually they'll have many more subscribers. Maybe people will discover the joys of wooden boats..... but that might be too much to ask. I love maintaining a wooden boat but not so many do these days. It makes them affordable at least.

Thank you for having me dreaming. It really is a beautiful area to cruise. How much would I like to be with you. Anyway, I am an old man, a former sailor in the german merchant navy. I love to be on the sea. Your lovely pictures feed my imagination. Thank you so much !

Your visit to San Javier was SO peaceful. The Bishop was in town for the celebration we found ourselves in. It was full immersion, shoulder-to-shoulder people wading through and kicking a carpet of aluminum cans about two cans deep across the ancient cobblestones. A carnival was operating on both sides of the street with food booths all along. There were at least 5000 people and no porta-potties. Some locals were renting-out their toilets. No bush within 100 feet of the outskirts of town was without a little patch of white blossoms. There was classic cabalgatos parading beautiful ranch people on their finest horses. Never to be forgotten.

Love your videos! Just a thought, the natural sounds would be so much more beautiful than the music, which at a certain point, becomes difficult to listen to. All the best to you and yours, just wanted to give you that feedback, so I can keep watching! We live on our wooden sailboat and love watching the fantastic places you are sailing to on yours!

What an incredible cruising ground. We loved the Sea of Cortez. Cruised it for about 3 yrs. On our way back to SFO from Panama. Got stuck there. Too nice to leave. Did a lot of Scuba there. I noticed that you just touched on Aqua Verde. This was one or our favorite spots. Wonderful little village. Helped out there one room school. The Sea life was amazing. So many dolphins and whales. We had many very close encounter with Hump Back, Grey and the mighty Blue Whale. One came so close that he was rubbing our hull. Stayed with us for about 5 min. Right with us!! He had to be 75+ feet. So many memories. Enjoy. And Thanks for the reminder.

You guys are living my dream! I'm in Campbell River on Vancouver Island and just finished my first 3 sailing courses. I've been to Baja 6 or 7 times in my 73 VW bus and hung out in all the areas you've been to but from land. Next time I sail there, down Central America and from Panama across the Pacific. I know I'm new to this but whatever, you only live once. Thanks for sharing.

OMG. So glad YT Analytics sent me to you. Everything about your channel is beautiful!! Sailing vessel, video work, music, scenery, etc. Fabulous job on the restoration of this gorgeous classic vessel. What is the design? I’m preparing my “new to me” Pacific Seacraft Flicka-20 sailboat for the same journey. Presently docked in Long Beach, Ca. Retirement in 12 months, then headed south to Baja for winter. Would love to cross paths along the Pacific Coastal waters!! If you come past LA again, I can take you “Soaring” (a different way to sail with mother natures help!).

Hello enjoyed your videos. I have a wooden boat in Mexico, I took the same route as you, but unfortunately I got dismasted along the way. I cannot find any workers in Mexico who have any expertise with wooden boats. Is there any way I can contact you?
@MadisonBoatworks
@MadisonBoatworks Год назад
Sorry to hear about your mast! Unfortunately I'm not able to be much help, we've set off over distant horizons. (The videos are a bit delayed from present location.) Spar quality wood and expertise is pretty thin on the ground in Mexico, might have to bring down a load of lumber and epoxy from San Diego. I assume it was a box section Marconi mast? Were you able to salvage any of the hardware? A new one could be built with just a few tools if you are up for the challenge. I hope you find a solution. Telephone poles have been used....
@rongrant6666
@rongrant6666 Год назад
@@MadisonBoatworks It's a gaff rigged schooner, that had a solid sitka spruce mast. The telephone posts are not long enough in Mexico, and the quality of the wood is very poor. I'm in Mazatlan now, difficult to bring supplies from the US. I just thought if you were around the area you could help me with some things? The mast is only one of my problems ha ha. Thanks for your reply.
@MadisonBoatworks
@MadisonBoatworks Год назад
@@rongrant6666 I would have been happy to help if near by. As you know a gaffer is very forgiving, a laminated stack of construction lumber planed round would not be totally unreasonable, or a longer end scarfed onto a telephone pole... I think Mazatlan is not the most friendly place to DIY. Best of luck to you though!

Would you consider hiring someone who would like to learn how to work on wood boats? I would like to get my own someday but rather learn first.
@MadisonBoatworks
@MadisonBoatworks Год назад
I wish I was in a place to do that. The best, easy resource for learning I have found is the book How to Build a Wooden Boat by David McIntosh. It is very clearly written and illustrated. Highly recommend!

Wooden boats are great but belong in northern waters. They deteriorate unbelievably quickly in tropical waters.
