Dr.Thank you for your excellent points regarding cortisone injections! I wanted to share that I'm in my late 50's and have been struggling with severe knee tendonitis for close to 15 years. This pain effected me daily from lifting out of my chair to getting out of my car and other squatting/bending positions necessary in life. It was excruciating during those movements. My doctor was unsure if a cortisone injection would help but we tried it anyway. I literally feel like I have new knees! The pain relief was instant and 2 months later, I still marvel at how well it worked. It relieved 100% of my pain. Praise God. I pray it continues to work longterm. Thank you again.
After a year of Physical Therapy , Pain and carrying my arm in a sling my Dr. decided on a Cortisone shot for my left shoulder , Within three days all the pain was gone and i was back to playing Tennis , Its been six months so far and all is good.. Id call this a miracle shot.. BTW My blood sugar did spike for a couple of weeks and wen back to normal . I didn't gain any weight..
I injured my knee 7 wks ago MRI shows complex medial meniscus tear, bone bruise & a Baker's Cyst which is leaking. An x-ray shows no arthritis. He is not sure about surgery, but, has vaguely mentioned having a Cortisone shot. After watching your video, I decided I will NOT have the injection. I have enough problems. I'm still in pain. All I was doing was putting a sm garden flag in the ground, and almost fell and over corrected myself and WHAM O!
Its only after watching this video I went for a cortisone injection with confidence. I was suffering from pain at the back of my heel for more than 4 months and doctors advised so many things like TENS, ultrasound, change of footwear to MCP chappels along with some pain killer tablets. Nothing worked. I couldn't walk, cycle, the must do regular exercises for my Type 2 diabetes. Though doctors suggested injection at the site of the pain I was so skeptical about the steroid injection, its side effects and how long it will last etc.. In 4:25 in this video you said if the pain goes off after the injection it may not come again. This gave me more confidence to try the injection 'cos chances of getting rid of pain once for all is also possible. Now after 10 days of the injection (Kenacort 40mg) I feel completely painless and many many thanks to you for giving the needed information (like how this is different from anabolic steroids, how long the pain relief last...). Thank you so much 🤗
@@michaels999hi, does silicone help if the knees are very inflamed? What stage arthritis do you have? How long have you been getting gel injections and how long do they last?
Thank you. I have taken cortisone shots in my knees for arthritis. Very helpful especially when I was still working before I retired. Some of the heavy lifting I did at work aggravated the arthritis. I don’t need to get them as often as I did when I was still working. They are well worth the temporary pain of the injection.
@Charlynn Mullin Hi, if you don’t mind me asking, what grade was your arthritis? How frequently did you take cortisone shots and for how many years have you taken it and how long was it lasting each time? Thanks
I have just had my first injection on my right knee. This is a very accurate report of how the steroid affect you. I am on day 3 since treatment. I have a slight bruise at the area of injection and slight face redness. However i am just start to feel its working . Also i have noticed how alert and well i feeling in general. So far i would say that it start to be very effective for all of my body. Even aches in my back are going . So it is well worth proceeding with this treatment. The best i felt in years. Good luck.
I had one last year in my frozen shoulder and the pain only came back after seven months. 😍 My surgeon doesn’t like to give them more than once a year, and sent me for an MRI to see if something else is going on, but my GP said only showed slight inflammation. Looks like I’m going to need another shot.
@@DrAndreaFurlan Have you ever had one yourself? I was told they’d give anaesthesia before it, and they didn’t. I actually had two, one in each foot, and there are no words to describe it 1000/10 on the pain scale, excruciating 😖
@@bloochoob I had one in my lower back guided by ct scan, im with you, i dont think i could have another one even though it helped. The pressure, pain and nerve spasm down my buttock was traumatic. Mild sedation should be an option.
I am thinking of getting an injection for pain! I have sciatic nerve issues! Please let me know how was it, and if it work for you! Thankyou in advance!
I'm waiting for my orthopaedic doctor to arrangedan injection on my left knee but I'm having a second thought of taking it for the reason that you mentioned that it will increase weight which I'm in the process of losing extra pounds on my body and also it may increase the water retention Thank you for the information its very helpful
My shot in my shoulder from arthritis, under ultrasound, did not hurt at all. I talked to the nurse the entire time and it was over in a few minutes. I may have felt a tiny poke and that was it. I was worried about the shoulder. Still hurts a little on day 2 but much improved.
Just within the last few weeks my Rheumatologist suggested shots for both hands as I was having terrible joint pain in my hands. Within a week of eachother I had both hands done. It’s been a few weeks from my first injection and about a week from the second. I can’t believe how much better I feel. You’re video just came up so thought I’d watch. Even though I have had the injections I’m happy to learn more about the steroids. Thank you so much. Debbie from the GTA.🥰
Thank you Dr.Furlan for this valuable information. I appreciate it as I have Bad knees and might be going for the Cortisone injection in the near future.

I had a shot in my knee a couple weeks ago. Seems like the pain got better right away, but is now coming back. Still better than it was, but, i was hopeful for more.
I had a cortisone injection into my hip and actually got a systemic reaction. Pain was reduced in my lower back and in my knee of the opposite leg. I also had really bad hot flushes for at least a week. I was not expecting this at all.
Ms Smiley; hopefully you’re feeling relief now. Or you’ve found alternate treatments. I’ve got an appointment with an ortho next week. My hip pain is unbearable currently. I am going to resist injections. It’s not worth the minute amount of relief that it can possibly provide.
@@hoosierbaddy3052 how did you solve this pain problem without ejection? I got cortisone injection six months ago and it relieved my pain. But it came back again. I don’t want to have another ejection
Very good information, thank you! I have been diagnosed with osteo arthritis of thumb and doctor posed possible use of steroid injection in future. At 81, I am not certain that is a good idea. Now I watched your video and I'm even more doubtful about it.
Hi Dr. Furlan, could you please make a video on how immediate family members can support and manage care for a person who has fibromyalgia? Would appreciate it.
I wouldn't bother with this , though likely the only thing your insurance would pay for . I suggest if you can afford it , acupuncture or some other remedy . Someplaces have " Community Acupuncture Clinics " Offering it on a sliding fee / low cost basis . I've had it for my neck , degeneration of one vertebrae and releived the pain and stiffness .
I have a rotator cuff injury and my dr asked if I wanted the injection and I said nope I really don’t trust it I’ve dealt with the pain for 6 years I’m sure I can wait longer hopefully I will have the surgery soon 😊😊😊
One thing that I had hoped was covered in this tutorial (by the way I love your tutorials and the simple honest way you talk! ) I was hoping or wondering if you cover the topic of occipital neuralgia as my doctor is suggesting and injection in my head to relieve it as a well as the trigeminal neuralgia Do you have thoughts or a tutorial on this type of pain? Thank you again for your many great tutorials!
@@DrAndreaFurlan Great to hear and I will be watching as I find I get something from all your videos! I send quite a few to my family so you are very liked and appreciated here on the east coast 🍁
I had injections done tonmy back the pain came back after 8 months. Yes the injection takes away pain, you are more mobile, therefore you cause more injury to your bones, dics without realizing it. I have issues with brusitis and C5 C6 and I refuse to take the injection, if I am in pain, I am aware and can look after myself better, by stopping what i am doing, rest, physiotherapy or chiropractor. Stretch, heat or cold pack. The doctors want to outsource all of the given options by them in order for them to operate So no matter what injection you take you will end up in a worse of condition and eventually have surgery.

Thank you for a very good and calm explanation of steroid injections. I had 6 lumbar cortisone injections done 2 weeks ago. I'm already feeling much less pain and relief after 4 years! However, I'm experiencing very much water retention and hunger. How long does this increase in those two areas generally last? Thank you in advance x

Thank you for your comments re cortisone injections. I have taken them for knee pain and they help. However, I have experienced severe cramps following the shots. Any comments regarding this would be appreciated. I also take the Gelsyn injections. Your comments please. Thank you.
I've had some relief from epidural and cortisone but it has been more like kicking the can down the road. Ended up eventually getting neck fusion and lapidectomy. I've had them in the back, neck, elbow and shoulder. Best results were the shoulder. The elbow hurt the most. It helped but after 2 months injury re-aggravated. I believe in heat, ice and massage. No side effects. It's not a cure but helps manage things.

I'm scheduled for a hip injection on March 27th,2024. I take Metformin & Ozempic to control my blood sugar. Last A1C 6.4 so I'm worried about my blood sugar going back up after injection.
Had my dr schedule this for both hips. Im not going through with it at this stage, because i had something similar 6xinjections at once into my lumbar under ct scanner, and i went into convolution, and silent tears just pooring out, until i nearly passed out from the hurt. It was that strong. They had to stop and i only got 2 of 6 injections. So my intuition tells me in this body particularly, im in for it, if i have cortisone injections in both hips.
A few things. A shot in the hand joint was very painfull. The shot in my knee was not like that. Just a stick and it was over. Second neither of these lasted very long. A few weeks at best. So 3 shots a year would last me 6 weeks out of 52. Not great. Third after deciding on knee surgery I had to wait 3 months because I had a shot. They would not do it till after the three months was up. PS I had bad authritus, 2 bone spers, torn meniscus and no cartilage left.

Just had yesterday. Sadly it has not helped, this I guess means surgery. Md said should take three days . It’s been day and a half. Not much help yet. Can’t walk. I
Thanks for the advice doc :).. I just got my cortisone shot this morning for my trigger finger and you are so right.. the injection hurt so bad 😅… still in pain and still hurt when i bend my finger.. hoping it will get better in few days.. again thanks for the advice…
What my doctor is doing for me… instead of one big jab in the general area/s of pain. She mixes cortisone and dental anaesthetic in a ratio of 1:1. Then using a DENTAL needle she injects the mix directly into the areaS of specific pain in the muscle (NOT directly into the joint but into the tendons etc) around the joint. Ie. NOT all into one place so that there is not that horrible extra pressure of the volume of injected fluid into an already inflamed area. And by splitting up the amount into different injections you get a wider coverage of the sore muscles, tendons etc around a joint without nearly the pain - yet it seems to work even better (ESPECIALLY when you have more than one joint problem as I do). We use a max total of 3mg of cortisone at a time, although it will be used in anywhere from 9 to 15 injection points. (With a dental injection needle this is more bearable.)
@@DrAndreaFurlan Definitely helpful as I have had a number of injuries and react quite badly to a lot of cortisone in one place. So it allows me to get a wide coverage (ankle, knee, hip, lower back, wrists and neck in one session). It also means not having to puncture into the delicate joint structure as well as being able to do much shallower injections.
I just got epidural injections in my spine for herniated disk. Spinal stenosis and severe spinal arthritis. It did help about 25 to 30 percent. It was a noticable improvement for sure,. But I noticed as a side effect. Anxiety and mid level panic attacks,. Which is a known side effect of Cortisone or similar steroids,. I had some. Magnesium oxide vitamins 250 mg. I broke it in half. Took 125 mg. Before lunch and the other 125 mg half pill. In the late afternoon. It definitely improved the anxiety and panic extremely well. Was really surprised. It had almost the same anti anxiety calming effect of a Xanax but was still able to function. Unlike the Benzo,. Which would've done the job I'm sure but would've had me disfunctional for hours.
