Though the first time I heard it I thought it was a bad performance, now I like it more than the studio version. It's imperfect, yes, but more heartfelt and real than the super-polished cd version. I wish she still had the courage to sing songs like this without the pressure of having to sound like the record. But she is so insicure, and people are so critical, so there's very little hope it will happen.
Sad how bad she’s judged in these comments. She may not have been on her best but it’s live and she gave what she could, that is way better than most artist out there! Have some respect, sorry she set the bar so high 🙄
She should have took a good rest, yet she has said many many times that she feels she lives for singing. She would like to sing and to deliver her songs to her fans.

WYC is in the same league as Hero in allowing her / inspiring her to improvise freely and amazingly. If she still had a full voice she could have gone anywhere with it. I love how each of these WYC are full of different intricacies and improvisations.
For one, we all have to give her major props for attempting to do this song live on this tour, given the shape of her voice, what was going on in her personal life at the time, and nodules going like crazy because of her Daydream tour. I don't think people realize how many shows and dates Mariah had during these years. This shows how much of an expert she is at controlling her voice, trying to sing through nodules and giving an amazing performance (albeit shaky at times and missing the climax). I just think it adds more to the depth of the emotion of the song. Who wants to go to a live show to hear the recorded version played back? Lamb4life
@smooth4hairy2 HELLO!!! Mariah has never sung a 3-4 hour concert every day. She sings a 1 and a half concert a top. She had just a few dates for that "tour". It was like 4 stops in Japan, 1 in Taiwan like 3 in Australia and then after a little extra rest, 1 stop in Hawaii. And she took like 3 days between each date to "rest her voice" so it's not an appropriate defense on her to say that. She's never been a concert girl. Her vocals are so dried. That's what alcohol causes.
With nodules + the stress around the divorce and the breaking of the contract with her label + rehearsing for the shows + working for her next album the rest was definitely not adequate. Her voice (mainly due to the nodules) is really gentle and these 10 dates in less than a month with her demanding songs were too much (in this tour she pushed herself really hard to deliver daydream like note changes and vocals which were apparently too much for her voice at the time). Stress + overworking + her condition = more than valid explanation for her declining vocal state
@veromariahfan no! it's not so much different AT ALL cause it's the EXACT same recording. the only difference is that they lowered it for the live version. that's probably why you have the feeling that it's different
I remember this was when her voice was really damanged. She cancelled the tour because of 'movie opportunities' but really I think it was because her voice desperatly needed rest for fear of wrecking it totally. I think this was around the time she sang 'Hero' on Oprah around 1998, you could really hear the damage then too! Just wish she would totally rest up sometimes! Bless her! Love her music!
@aussiechic06 I have the WHOLE concert and its not "old school 1998" cause in 98 there was enough quality. You can hear the even older 96 equipments fans used to record her daydream tour in Europe and her voice is awesome. Here the problem is her voice, not the recording.
Mr. Game & Watch Yes, she did get rests but you know that Mariah was dealing with her husband Tommy Mottola? Because of her divorce with him plus she was also still doing interviews most of the time she was resting and her nodules were very tired and irritated which lead to change her voice into a raspier tone and husky tone, plus she started recording her album during January 1997? Not 7 months of rest, basically nothing. I’m pretty sure she started writing her songs for her Butterfly Album from around September-December 1996, plus her last performance in Daydream was in July. So basically no rest at all and doing interviews, going to awards so basically no rest.
@@TheBritneyMinajSpearsQuartz Nah. she released 5 albums for 6 years with promotional concerts, tours (she had 13 shows but 100% live with vocal suicide songs). 7 months? That's really not enough. She should have been rested for 2 years at least.
@baretreemty her sis got herself into that stuff so she would never try it and she quuit smoking before her singing career started so no drugs, no smoking= no weed
@Ginuwinejay She did need a break and maybe some vocal lessons to help restore her range. Like when she realized she couldn't sing high notes in her chest voice as she's been able too she should have took some time off.
@haggis996 That song you are referring to is not a LIVE performance. That's something that her fans (some) have been saying it was. That performance is lipped. If you check the DVD you'll find its the only song that doesn't says recorded live. So, the album version or the promo video Sony did for it with her album version and images of her Hawaii concert is how it'd have sounded. Why didn't they use her live performances of it like in 96 they did with Forever? go figure :)
@alexstar15 Oh, and the only couple things I do remember quite well is the fact she dated Luis Miguel for almost 3 years and I know he has always been involved in drug abuse, he has used weed and extasys and it's documented and MC was so happy with him and she was even so "highly excited" on those 2001 interviews ALWAYS and also, MC when asked one day (not so long ago) said that "I have never been into drugs, I have never been into HARD drugs" what is HARD? I mean, there's ppl said weed is fine
@alexstar15 are you that sure? I mean, I am not. I can just recall media people concerned about her wild parties she was into back in 97. They even were calling it names on how much she was with all those rappers in the wildest parties they have always been into. They mostly talked about how much alcohol she was drinking and that she was up to late night into smoky clubs taking no care of her fragile voice. What we can really see is that her voice went off and never came back.
Yeah, the recording is really bad... it's old school 1998 equip, which was pretty sucky... pitch is lower than it really would have been at the concert.... not to mention, this possibly wasn't one of the first few songs that she sang at that concert... what I would give to be at that concert....
I never got to experience her proper voice live. I went to her concert in 2013 in Melbourne and it was one of the most disappointing things in my life. She didn't sing. She just joked her way through every song.
