Druaga1 and I try to install a period correct distro of linux on the 98 Machine.
pt 2: • Installing OpenLinux o...
Spoilers for both videos below:
Wow this was not easy. No wonder linux didn't take off in the 90's. Three different commercial distros failed to install. I'm going to have to come back to this later. The is an itch I must now scratch.
OpenLinux seems the most interesting to me after reading up about it. Before the video I had just bought it because it said linux on the box. Now I know it was a pretty big effort and I want to see it in action.

Linux, generally, designates IDE drives with hdx (x=a, b, c, etc.) vs. SCSI and SATA drives as sdx.
@TechTangents
@TechTangents 6 лет назад
That is exactly the kind of thing I like to get more experience with by using older technology. I did not know that `hdx` was used for IDE drives. Thanks for that tip!

AkBKukU I have recently been playing with FreeNAS, which is based on FreeBSD. It has even more arcane drive names docs.freebsd.org/doc/4.5-RELEASE/usr/share/doc/handbook/disks-naming.html : IDE drives are adx and SCSI are dax.
@sarahts21
@sarahts21 6 лет назад
It actually depends on the kernel, since some point in the early 2.6.x series they rolled everything in to the same block device system that was used for SCSI, so if you were to, somehow, boot a modern kernel on that ancient machine you'd still see SDxy as the drives. Kind of makes sense as a block device is a block device.

I remember being very confused when I first into an sdx device. I was used to everything being hdx
@knightcrusader

And sdx is a carry over from SCSI drives that they applied to SATA as well.

Your Socket A motherboard is too new for that Mandrake CD, it doesn't have the right HDD controller drivers for it, since it can't even mount the root FS. This is also a common problem when setting up a Hackintosh ("still waiting for root device").

@eduardoavila646
@eduardoavila646 6 лет назад
Ethan Alt Actually the raid isnt druaga way. Too easy, just put some sds in there and have a system. Would more of his style a deffective adapter from micro sd to sd, then into a adapter from sd to pata mobile (laptop one) then from that to sata. That would be more like it. But if you wanna suggest something that is somewhat reliable (thus not druaga way), why not a reliable adapter? But yeah, druaga probably could make even the raid one hard to use. He has his own dedicated murphy law
@ethanalt9048
@ethanalt9048 6 лет назад
Eduardo Avila I see your point. I was kinda getting at the idea he wouldn't read directions and mess it all up... If he wanted to complicate things, how about this: microSD > SD > SATA > RAID card? Or, as you said, throw PATA in the middle for good measure? Just the idea of an SD card RAID is very Druaga to me...

Also, the Kernel panic in the beginning failed to mount the rootfs. The rootfs is the first, temporary filesystem that linux uses to bootstrap the kernel while booting. You can reed more about it here: www.kernel.org/doc/Documentation/filesystems/ramfs-rootfs-initramfs.txt The issue was not that it tried to mount the SD card adapter or the CD exchanger, although I don't know why it failed to mount the initial rootfs though...

Slackware is a real distro. I forget what release but I had reiserfs and compiled my own kernel from 2.6. That thing screamed for a pentium 3 450 and 256 megs of ram. Then I compiled vanilla kde 3 and it sucked the wind right out of the sails.

@rifter0x0000
@rifter0x0000 6 лет назад
originally sd* stood for scsi drives. At some point linux developers decided to treat ide devices like SCSI devices for various reasons. In any case the naming convention is from before SATA was even a thing.
@Nandru85
@Nandru85 5 лет назад
@@rifter0x0000 Yup, had a old dual-pentium II server with scsi drives and those were named sdX and the ide ones hdX
@kaitlyn__L
@kaitlyn__L 5 лет назад
the sd* still stands for scsi drives, sata uses scsi signalling instead of pata/ide signalling, and sas (serial attached scsi) ports are compatible with sata drives. sata is still an *ata solution in some ways, like how ide was pata, but on the software layer, it's mostly scsi. but serial and fast.

The reason why Mandrake didn't boot was likely the plug n play setting in the BIOS. If I recall, you need to set "plug n play OS installed" to no and the BIOS will initialize plug n play devices, such as the IDE controller. Failing that, you could boot Linux with slower hard drive and cdrom access by tying "linux ide=nodma" at the boot prompt. If I recall, this was all in the manual which, you know, you probably should have read. 90s Linux wasn't something you just jumped into, you read the manual first because there were lots of little gotchas like this. There's a reason why Linux user groups and installfests were a thing, just getting it installed was not easy.

haha i first installed Linux in 1998 (Caldera OpenLinux 1.3) on an NEC desktop with a Pentium 75 that had a "doubler chip" installed that bumped it to 120mhz. i had to tell XFree86 the horizontal and vertical frequencies of my monitor because it couldn't detect them. i blew away my MBR with LILO and it took me a month to figure out how to get it to see my Win98 partition again. oh, and... your "98 machine" has a 2001 CPU. a lot changed in those 3 years, might have something to do with your troubles.
@rifter0x0000

I'm pretty sure all you had back then was ext2. 2GB was a common limitation for sizes of things because 32 bit computing. I'm much less sure there were even many 30+GB drives back then, but it has been a long time. There definitely were not many among consumers if they existed. There were a couple distributions that had games during the install - the first one I remember was Tetris.

When Mandrake Linux 6.5, around 2005, and Caldera OpenLinux, around 1999, Flash drive media was just becoming available for purchase. SD cards came about around late 2006 but were very expensive. Once you get the either of the OS's up and running you might be able to copy the Linux image to the SD using the dd program.

I suspect the reason you got this kernel panic error is either that a) your ram had a bad sector b) it tried to read from a particular ramslot which wasnt populated (rootfs is part of ramfs which essentially is a virtual partition installed on your ram)

You know, I miss the idea of "boot floppies". Warts and all, it was an incredibly convenient way to boot a system. Not on a PC, but I had an old Power Mac 8600 and back in those days Apple's ROMs really didn't allow for a lot of opportunity to boot anything *but* the Mac OS. That isn't to say you couldn't boot Linux, you certainly could, just that you had to go through a few hoops compared to the much nicer 1999+ Power Macs whose ROMs were really open to booting almost anything which support the motherboards. There were programs like QUIK which could serve as a bootloader for those old Macs and back then Linux kernels were more than small enough they would fit on a 1.44 floppy and I kept that floppy whenever I wanted to boot into linux and then all I had to do was reboot *without* the floppy and it would automatically load the Mac OS as normal.

I don't know about hotplugging - but when hacking the original xbox? you'd boot the xbox so it unlocked the drive, then leaving the power plugged in, disconnect the IDE, connect it to a PC and boot Linux - the BIOS probably has to detect the IDE devices but as far as plugging then in and out? you might crash the PC perhaps? but it's electrically safe (assuming your PC + Xbox share a common earth)

32Gb ain't much, but EXT2 formating is a bit more than writing a FAT table and it's copies. On top of that, it also is creating multiple partitions as usual on default installs, which always annoyed the crap out of me. Usually stuck with 2 or 3 on the main disk.

There was no Freedos to even try and boot back then iirc. hmmmm maybe it boots LiLo (linux loader). shoulda doned freebsd net install from the two floppies or maybe for video next time ! also _hd_ designation was for ide hdds, scsi's were _sd_ and for sata they also used _sd_. 13:50 check for h/w freeze with caps lock!
