The early hours of 8 October 1997, less than a week after the launch of BBC ONE's famous balloon idents. John Kettley is the weatherman, but just as he hits his stride, a short and sudden burst of... could it be thunder...? No, the National Anthem makes a surprise splash on John's parade - but he won't be dampened. The anthem was no doubt on the ident tape that was played into the forecast; the intended closedown, after all, occurred immediately afterwards. Closedowns like this were on their way out; overnight handovers to BBC NEWS 24 started the following month on 8 November 1997, making them a thing of the past.
