1.01 Prologue: One Ring to Rule Them All | LotR Score Analysis

An analysis of the themes and letitmotifs of the Lord of the Rings - The Complete Recordings; composed, orchestrated and conducted by Howard Shore. The videos stay true to how the tunes are presented in The Complete Recordings, so all scenes with no or altered music are omitted.
IMPORTANT: The featured sample notations are not necessarily identical (in key, form or time signature) to the relevant music in the tracks. They exist to give a visual cue for the themes, not to be taken literally for every iteration of the theme.
Quotes mostly taken from The Annotated Score and The Music of the Lord of the Rings Films by Doug Adams
A big thank you to A Magpie’s Nest, and the mysterious transcriber M.W., without either these videos might never have been made.
I am not affiliated with Middle-earth Enterprises, the Tolkien Estate, New Line Cinema, Warner Brothers, WingNut Films, Doug Adams or Howard Shore.

5:28 Underrated moment. Economic storytelling had to cut the Gollum origin story to the basic "Middle-Ring possessor" for now. But still that one line of ominous chorus "The Hearld of Death" implicitly tells you something more foul and malicious happened than just him sulking in the caves.

LOVE LOVE LOVE this!!!! Every time i rewatch the trilogy, the connections between the music becomes more obvious. In my head, humming one song will seamlessly blend into another melody sharing the same chord, the same tempo, and it took my slow mind a while to realise what that meant exactly xD. I don't have musical education, and I was hoping that someone out there was smart enough to catalogue these connections, and now my hopes have been rewarded! I'm so happy to find this video :) Your insights on the thematic expressions behind the music are illuminating and fascinating, I am going to greatly enjoy this series. Thank you.

As I progress through these videos, I notice mistakes and realize there's plenty of stuff I could have brought up that I didn't. Eventually, I will probably remake this entire series to get a consistent, efficient look and analysis, but in the mean time, I'll have an "Addendum" comment pinned on certain videos. This one is pretty solid (it was the 17th draft after all), but in hindsight I would've included more information about the Lothlórien theme. It mixes both Sindarin and Quenya, and it's in the Phrygian dominant mode, the significance of which is elaborated on in track 1.30. Also, the sample notation for both Lothlórien and the History themes are wrong. The first is supposed to play over an open F chord, not G, and the latter doesn't wave between E and F# in the bass, but F# and G. Thanks for watching!

Been poking at a few later entries in this series, but wow. Howard Shore really went all-out on the overarching composition...everything is so tightly tied together in the background, just like the story. He wrote the story in music to accompany the intricacy of the screen. So many movies just have epic scores for the sake of impact, with a bit of base thematic tying...but this really underscores how timeless of a classic this trilogy truly was, how much everyone involved cared about the project. After all, the audio is half the experience. Just from the onset...I thought I recognized a few of the ties here and there, but seeing it broken down like this...man. The story in the music alone. It's breathtaking. definitely gonna have to binge the rest of your series soon here.

@@asukalangleysoryu6695 I might make a sort of behind-the-scenes video in the future, but for the moment I can give you the short version. It's not exactly "simpler" but it does the work a whole lot better than just selecting the background and deleting it. I write the notes in the notation software Finale, screenshot them and open the pic in Photoshop. There, I use Layer Styles>Blending Options to make all white pixels opaque. Copy that layer and merge back so the opqaue pixels are deleted, then invert the color. Done.

One interesting thing to add, since I haven't seen it displayed, is that those descending thirds accompanying the Ringwraiths theme is a famous medieval Dies Irae that is figured in lots of audiovisual production. Congrats for the video!
@monoverantus
@monoverantus 3 года назад
A lot of people has made that connection, since the Descending thirds go F-D-E-C-D-Bb-C-A, and Dies Irae goes F-E-F-D-E-C-D-D, which indeed is similar. But I asked Doug Adams himself about this during the TheOneRing Score streams he did last Christmas, and he denied the connection, stating that the LotR score makes no references to real world music or culture. This is not to say you're not free to interpret the score however you want, but I personally agree with Doug's stance.
@valadao
@valadao 3 года назад
@@monoverantus Thanks for the response! I should have said "inspired" or "based" on the Dies Irae. I believe it would be odd an experienced composer like Howard Shore didn't have knowledge of this theme, but if he had no intention in directly referencing it, but taking its "mood" instead, there's no reason to deny it. These free associations are not depending on the composer’s consciousness or intent, as well as we, as analysts, can address for enrichment of analysis content. Film Scores are so powerful on these sense and Shore’s is superb. The 5/4 beat is Isengard’s orc scenes reminded me of Mars of Holst’s Planets, that has the right tone for the moment, as other example. Well, once more, great content! I'm getting at Rivendell scenes for now. It would be nice to get to know more about any other projects of analysis you have. Do you have any other platform besides youtube for producing content? Cheers!

They really did Elendil dirty. He and Gil-Galad were actually the ones who defeated Sauron, even though it cost them their own lives. Isildur basically just cut the ring off of Sauron’s hand when he was down, mortally wounded.
@monoverantus
@monoverantus 2 года назад
I mean, condensing characters is only par for the course with adaptations. I have more sympathy for those missing Tom Bombadil, since his exclusion erases a whole segment of the story. Giving the efforts of Elendil and Gil-Galad to Isildur doesn't change the story in a meaningful way.

I amar prestar aen 'The world is changed', han mathon ne nen 'I feel it in the water', han mathon ne chae 'I feel it in the earth' a han noston ned 'wilith 'I smell it in the air'. Much that once was is lost, for none now live who remember it. It began with the forging of the Great Rings. Three were given to the Elves, immortal, wisest and fairest of all beings. Seven to the Dwarf lords, great miners and craftsmen of the mountain halls. And nine, nine rings were gifted to the race of men, who, above all else, desire power. But they were, all of them, deceived, for another Ring was made. In the land of Mordor, in the fires of Mount Doom, the Dark Lord Sauron forged in secret a master Ring, to control all others. And into this Ring he poured his cruelty, his malice and his will to dominate all life. One Ring to rule them all.

Great video! I have a question about the History of the Ring theme (begins at 0:41): You, and I think the score as well, write the quarter notes played by the celli as e and f-sharp, but I hear f-sharp and g. The notes appear first in ascending order in the second bar of the theme, and then again in descending order in the fourth bar. Any idea? Apart from the fact that I’m hearing f-sharp and g, it also makes more sense in the first instance because the g leads to the a-flat.

So sad that they used the Ringwraith scene so early and not even for the ringwraiths…… like everyone says how dumb it is when we hear it at the end of „an unexpected journey“ when Thorin faces Azork (is that the name?). But the prolog did it „wrong“ too

@rnhtube 4 года назад
@@monoverantus Yes. It's a motif for the ring itself. In Star Wars youtube they have the "force theme" that is for a motif that does not represent the force, and instead represents a philosophical concept only tangentially related to the force. This is one of my favorite movie motifs ever- it's music that represents complex feelings (gee just like THE RING ITSELF) and that really takes a master to execute. I've heard that all the themes and motifs are sort of versions of each other, and I've seen several examples, but none involving the ring motif, which sounds so different from everything else. I can't wait to watch more of your videos.
