Here are the sights and sounds from the Illinois Live Steamers 2013 Labor Day Run. The Hiawatha was one of several steam locomotives that graced the rails, and scale New York Central Hudson #6620 also came for a visit. Thanks for watching The Steam Channel!

I would have loved to see one of the Locomotives in preservation. There's just something about it that really appeals to me

Gorgeous engine! I am really infatuated by the Milwaukee Road's class F7 steam locomotives. Here's what wikipedia has to say about them: "They comprised six (#100-#105) high-speed, streamlined 4-6-4 "Baltic" or "Hudson" type steam locomotives built by Alco in 1937-38 to haul the Milwaukee's Hiawatha express passenger trains. Following on from the success of the road's class A 4-4-2s, the F7s allowed the road to haul heavier trains on the popular Chicago-Twin Cities routes. The F7s are major contenders for the fastest steam locomotives ever built, as they ran at over 100 miles per hour (160 km/h) daily. One run in January 1941 recorded by a reporter for Trains magazine saw 110 miles per hour (180 km/h) achieved twice-in the midst of a heavy snowstorm. Baron Gérard Vuillet, a French railroading expert, once recorded a run between Chicago and Milwaukee where the locomotive reached 125 mph (201 km/h) and sustained an average 120 mph (190 km/h) for 4.5 miles (7.2 km).[1] However, the British locomotive LNER Class A4 4468 Mallard is officially accepted to be the world's fastest, with a run recorded at 126.1 mph (202.9 km/h) in 1938. The Milwaukee F7s are accepted as the fastest steam locomotives by a different measure-scheduled speed between stations. In 1939, shortly after they were introduced into passenger service, the Twin Cities Hiawatha schedule was modified such that the engines would need to run the 78.3 mi (126.0 km) between Portage and Sparta, Wisconsin in 58 minutes-a start-to-stop average of 81 mph (130 km/h).[1] First-built #100 was also the first withdrawn from service, on November 10, 1949; last-built #105 was the final one in service, withdrawn August 10, 1951. All were scrapped." Bummer. It's one of my steam loco fantasies that an exact replica of a Milwaukee Road Hudson F7 gets built and does a test run that breaks the verified Mallard steam loco record. I'm sure it happened that this loco ran faster than the 126 mph record but we will probably never know.

I really do miss seeing this Hiawatha Hudson at LALS. I remember back in the day before Russ had it shipped out of SoCal. I really miss seeing it pull the Pullman cars on Sunday at LALS 🙁

How much do they buy these steam engines? What are the price ranges of these tings? They got to be very expensive
@jamesm6638
@jamesm6638 Год назад
You build your own so it all depends on the size, complexity, and detail level. At this scale you could build a small locomotive with not much detail for a few thousand bucks, or you could spend $400,000+ building a big boy with all the prototypical detail in the world. It's only as expensive as you make it.

now is hat a good thing or bad?
@TheSteamChannel
@TheSteamChannel 10 лет назад
Joe Newstead It's much cleaner than coal, and it makes the locomotive much easier to run. It's not prototypical so some don't care for it.
@edisone1
@edisone1 7 лет назад
Propane sounds like a brilliant solution! I would imagine that this scale makes a decent coal fire pretty difficult if not impossible.

Hawatha when in use was a trouble and in this scale model too seems a trouble
@daveyboygee
@daveyboygee 6 лет назад
Why do you say that? Did they have service problems? I've never read anything bad about the quality of this engine while in service. As steam locos go, they seem to have been as good as it gets!
@gasperagacy
@gasperagacy 6 лет назад
well there r many steam locos ins USA which were made just 3-4 and later retired after 2-3 months or 2-3 years coz of their traction or weight trouble and Hawatha too was one of them. but yes American companies never disclosed it coz they never wanted to show their poor quality in steam loco making.British Loco A4 was just 2/3 of Hawatha but had more speed and power than it, and 1/3 of Big Boy but still made 80% power of it. if Britain had made big steam locos like Big Boy i am sure it would be 2.5 times more powerful than the real one
@daveyboygee
@daveyboygee 6 лет назад
Haha now I know you're full of it! The Hiawatha ran for over 10 years with regular maintenance and was nearly trouble free. Not only was it is as strong as an equal sized British locomotive but it was probably faster than anything the British ever made. Yes the Mallard went 126 miles per hour once, but the Hiawatha F7 steam locomotives topped a 125 miles an hour for dozens of miles on a regular basis. Mallard rarely topped 100 miles per hour. And when it did it was only for a few miles at a stretch. Remember that American locos had to go thousands of miles and across this huge country.They couldn't afford to break down. They needed reliable engines. The Hiawatha was no different. It had to run a route from Chicago all the way almost to Seattle. And it did this reliably for over a decade. But nice try.
@gasperagacy
@gasperagacy 6 лет назад
Well mate Britons never made as big engines as Americans. i have seen both Hawtha in pics and its measurements and compared it with the biggest British Steam loco Coronation series of LMS and Hawatha was bigger. and yes british tracks r more twistier and curlier than American straight laid tracks and on that British Locos managed an average speed of 90mph. in 1998 The Flying Scotsman was on Australia Tour and there on Indian Pacific Expressway there is the longest straight of a railway track of 340 miles there it at the age of 75 did an average speed of 108 mph the slowest speed that time was 97mph and fastest 115mph. for 3 hours running at that speed matters a lot and hats-off to the crew who made it running at that speed when u have to shovel tons of coal into the engine not like the American laziness that put the fire burning on oil so that u have to shovel nothing. and yes the fastest speed touched by a steam loco was by a German loco who topped the speed of 130mph for 5 mins but coz it was neither a measuring run nor an official run so it was never certified
