Hii @viradrokade1040 See consider tolerance only...... because instrument selection is based on the tolerance or process behavior for accurate measurement.... As per your question tolerance is +/- 0.5mm Total tolerance=0.10 mm As per 1/10 rule = total tolerance/10 =0.10/10 = 0.01mm Here, you have to select the instrument which is having the least count equal or less than 0.01mm...then only u can capture process behavior... If Sometimes like in automotive sector tolerance is +/- 0.005mm Here total tolerance is= 0.010mm 1/10 rule = total tolerance/10 = 0.010/10 = 0.001mm Here you can not use vernier caliper or other instrument which is having least count like 0.01mm, 0.02mm, 0.002mm, 0.005mm. You have to use only the instruments which are having least count equal or less than 0.001mm.
There is no need to think about unilateral or bilateral........ Because we have to consider total tolerance only........ like bilateral example already given in earlier comment same..... For unilateral Suppose tolerance is +0.005/-0.000 mm Then total tolerance is = 0.005mm 1/10 rule = 0.005/10 = 0.0005mm Here, you have to select the instrument which is having least count equal or less than 0.0005mm (0.5 micron)
