In this tutorial I show you how to crochet the traditional granny square using DMC no. 80 cotton and a 0.5mm hook and how to crochet the squares together to create a beautiful throw / Afghan for a dolls’ house bed. I also show you how to make cushions using the same pattern. These beautiful throws will add a splash of colour and a warm, cosy feel to any room in your dolls’ house and once you’ve had a go at making them, you’ll want to add them to all your miniature projects!
The DMC Special Dentelles cottons and crochet hooks can be purchased from: www.claireslace.co.uk

I know how to do this, but I wanted to acknowledge the effort you put in your tutorial as well as in your lovely crochet. I rely on a bright light and no less than three pairs of reading glasses. Three, count ‘em three. I’m sure I look quite silly, but that’s the only way I can see my work.

Thank you Julie for making the squares in real time. It was so helpful. I’ve watched it several times over the past year and finally tried again after a failed attempt last year. It went so well this time. It may take me a while but as soon as I’m done I’ll post my finished throw and cushions on Facebook.😊

Your attention to detail is what I love about your videos. I've crocheted and knitted for years but I never imagined a little afghan. And it's something I could include in my granddaughter's doll house because it can't be crushed or snapped into pieces. I may need a magnifying glass but I'm definitely giving this a try.

I have been persevering at getting smaller and have managed to get to a 1mm hook with the embroidery floss I am using for practice. It's amazing the difference the hook size makes. I think I M just about at my limit now though as both my eyesight and manual dexterity seem to object if I try any smaller. Like you have said, there's no point if you're not enjoying crocheting so I have been trying with various stitches to fake the look of granny squares instead of obsessing on using smaller and smaller hooks. I really enjoy all your videos Julie and I think my dabbling in the doll house hobby has kept me sane in these stressful times. Thank you and I hope you and your family are keeping safe and well throughout this pandemic .

Hi Ann. Do have a look at my crochet vlog, where I talk all about square sizes and the hooks to use to make them in a particular size. As a quick answer though, these 4-round squares are about 20mm (3/4 inch) square.

Could you use the multi stranded embroidery thread for this? Or does it really only work with this type of cotton thread?
@JulieWarren

You could use embroidery thread. It’s a bit finer than the crochet thread, so you may need to use a smaller hook, say a 0.4mm (no.24).

I go to Joanns.com and they always have the threads. It's not even very expensive. They also have silk threads. I love to crochet in miniature. It adds a wonderful touch to a scene. I got the .60mm crochet hook (Clover brand) on amazon.com just go there and search for the items. I recommend getting the threads on joanns, though, because they have a great selection and there are often coupons. I hope this helps. Let me know if there's any more I can do to help you. Your description was clear as always, but it's been many years since I last crocheted & I'm a rather visual learner. Sadly, my eyes just couldn't see the small scale of your work on my laptop. However, I'm sure there'll be a vid somewhere in a larger scale to refresh my memory of crochet before I come back here & have another go. Hopefully not an American one tho, as they have different terms from where I learned in UK & Australia & I don't need to be more confused lol.

I have bad eyes, too, but I use a magnifier. Nowadays, they have these digital magnifiers on amazon.com for 40 bucks that can make it as big as you want, and you can watch on the computer what you're crocheting. It's magnificent. Highly recommend getting some kind of magnifier. You'll show off and people will wonder how you did it!

@JulieWarren 7 лет назад

@janicebell1964
@janicebell1964 7 лет назад
There are also the mag eyes, which is just a thing that you put on your head and can swing the magnifier bit down, and it doesn't affect if you have glasses or not. Let me know if I can help in any way.
@joannecarroll5504
@joannecarroll5504 5 лет назад
@@janicebell1964 sorry for the late response. The instructions are quite clear & my problem is not in seeing my work, but in seeing the teaching stitch on the screen to compare to my own, so I can follow the instructions. I have since re-watched the video via Chromecast on a large flat screen tv & once again, I can see hands, needle & cotton, but not the stitches that I need to emulate. I can't magnify what is not visible to the camera. Some other videos that teach crochet do it with much larger hooks & with thicker yarn than usual, purely for demonstration purposes, so the camera can pick it up & show it more clearly. I feel that may be a good idea for future mini crochet tutorials.
